Nineteenth-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901) set his musical score for Aida to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni (Nov. 25, 1824-July 16, 1893). The Italian librettist, poet and writer usually is considered to have sourced his libretto from a scenario by French Egyptologist François Auguste Ferdinand Mariette (Feb. 11, 1821-Jan. 19, 1881).
Verdi's Aida received a world premiere, held Sunday, Dec. 24, 1871, at Khedivial Opera House, also known as Royal Opera House, in Cairo, northeastern Egypt.
