Flaming coffee sambuca acts as a Christmas toast in Whiteout, anglicized from Andköf, fifth thriller in the Dark Iceland sextet about Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur) Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason by Ragnar Jónasson.

The second thriller brings a Reykjavík (“smoky bay”) superintendent, a Siglufjördur (“sailing fjord”) policeman and two forensicists to two crime scenes and to one hotel bar. Ari Thór and Tómas respectively choose beer perhaps from Siglufjördur and beer perhaps from Reykjavík even as Hanna chooses sambuca for herself and water for Mummi. Kristín (“Christ-bearer”), Akureyri (“sandbank field”) hospital doctor and Ari Thór’s (“eagle thunder”) pregnant girlfriend, drinks lemonade even as perhaps non-alcoholic drinking preferences direct Mummi (“protection, thought”?).

Ari Thór, Kristín and Tómas, at another time and elsewhere, in the hotel restaurant, enjoy water with bread and kyótsúpa (lamb-piece meat stew, “meat soup” literally).

Ari Thór and Arnór (“thunder fighter, thunder priest”) Heidarsson (“bright, clear, cloudless army’s son”) respectively fear not hotel-room tap water and police-station bottled or tap water.

Ari Thór otherwise gets, as a non-alcoholic drink Christmas Eve, not-so-hot, strong-flavored cocoa from Arnór’s best friend, business partner and wife, Thórhalla (“thunder rock, slate, stone”). Thóra, housekeeper to Kálfshámarsvík- and Reykjavík-habitating businessman Reynir (“rowan [Sorbus aucuparia]”) Ákason (“uncle’s son”) and next-door neighbor to Arnór and Thórhalla, has coffee as non-alcoholic drink. Her coffee is what Ásta (“affection, love” or “heathen god”) Káradóttir (“curly-haired [one’s] daughter” or “obstinate, reluctant [one’s] daughter”) ingests her first evening as Reynir’s invitee.

Ásta joins Arnór, Reynir, Thóra and Thóra’s brother, Óskar (“enemy”), for a Christmas-season dinner, without a flaming coffee sambuca Christmas toast, in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör.

Óskar, Kálfshámarsvík (“calf rock-face bay”) lighthouse keeper and property caretaker, knows Ásta as a picky eater for whom he kept biscuits and milk on fish-dinner nights.

Ásta perhaps likes Christmas-season lamb with cinnamon rice pudding and red wine even as she perhaps lives on whatever sandwiches she loaded for the drive north. It must matter to Ásta that Thóra made Christmas-season hangikjót (“hanged meat” as cold-smoked, boiled lamb) or hangilæri (“hanged leg” as smoked lamb), not Christmas-season skate. The Blönduós (“mixed[-water river] mouth”) hotel restaurant contrastingly nurtures Christmas Eve traditions of kæstur skata (“fermented skate [Rajidae ray and ray-like family of cartilaginous fishes]”) dinners.

Reynir offers Christmas-season housemates red wine December 19 even as Hanna obtains flaming coffee sambuca for a Christmas toast December 22 in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör.

It pains Thóra that December 20, 21 and 22 pass without her preparing laufabrauð (Romanized laufabrauð, baked flatbread, “leaf bread” literally) or putting out Christmas chocolates.

The Siglufjördur Co-op quarters fresh-baked flatbread for Christmas-season customers such as Ari Thór and Kristín during the two hours of their southwestward, westward drive to Blönduós. Perhaps the breakfast realized by Óskar for Thóra Christmas Eve morning, after the previous day relishing Reynir’s rich whisky and wine, reaped extra flatbread from Thórhalla. Arnór, Óskar, Reynir and Thóra sample red wine and whisky without Ásta December 22 even as December 23 Tómas sips jólaöl (“Yule ale”) with his wife.

Kristín traveling to Sauðárkrókur (Romanized Saudárkrókur) triggers a Christmas Eve treat, more treasurable than the thrillingest flaming coffee sambuca Christmas toast in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör.

Thóra Óskarsdóttir ("thunder enemy's daughter") agonizes over not availing anyone of laufabrauð (Romanized laufabraud, baked flatbread, “leaf bread” literally) for the first time in her life.
