Why Are Sleds in Seasons by the Lake by Naja Lund Aparico?

Summary: Why are sleds in Seasons by the Lake by author Naja Lund Aparico and illustrator Alex Nees, Dial Books, Penguin/Random House, Tuesday, March 17, 2026?

"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.

“And there’s many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I’m like, hang on, let’s not give up on this planet yet," William, Prince of Wales, July 31, 2023, Sorted Food food truck, London, England, United Kingdom.

Ummannaq Island, Avannaata municipality, central-western Greenland accommodated the first sled-dog race championships even as the afore-addressed activity adds new attendees to its traditional attendees every year, apart the two years of its non-availability.

Why are sleds in Seasons by the Lake: Adventures in Greenland by author Naja Lund Aparico and illustrator Alex Nees, Dial Books for Young Readers, Penguin/Random House imprint, March 17, 2026?
Sleds, perhaps built from animal cords and sinew, reindeer and seal hides and walrus and whale bones, bring brothers Minik ("seal-oil") and Nuka ("[older-sibling's-]same-gendered-younger-sibling) outdoors. The first page of the fall-season months September, October, November considers older-brother Minik crossing snowy ground with Greenland-dog Nanoq ("polar-bear") alongside and with his sled behind. The second page depicts younger-brother Nuka seated, with each leg dangling over an opposite side even as he and his sled down into separate snow drifts.
The back side to the authorial Postscript's second page entails another sledding encounter even as younger-brother Nuka enjoys a sled ride enabled by sled-tie haltered Nanoq.

Perhaps Nanoq and Nuka favor subsequent careers as respective musher and sled dog even as their island features, since 1989, the annual-national sled-dog race Avannaata Qimussersua.
Ole Qvist (died Mon., Dec. 9, 2019) generated, in Uummannaq, Uummannaq Island, Avannaata municipality, central-western Greenland, the first sled-dog race as the North Greenlandic Regional Championship. The afore-heralded Greenlandic musher had western Greenland north of the Arctic Circle host all races, with all dogs purebred Greenland Dogs (Greenlandic Kalaallit Qimmiat; Danish Grønlandshund. Avannaata Qimussersui is, since 2021, all Greenland's annual-national sled-dog race even as that championship always involves such Avannaata-region settlements as Kangerluk ("inland-/innermost-fjord/-inlet"), Qeqertarsuaq ("island-great/-large"), Sisimiut ("foxhole-inhabitant-s'").
Author Naja Lund Aparico and illustrator Alex Nees jubilate Seasons by the Lake even as one brother, one Greenland dog perhaps journey on sled-dog race sleds.

Either the winter-month April or the spring-month May annually kindles the national-pride symbol even as Avannaata Qimussersui keepsaked no sled-dog races the years 2020 and 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic led to Avannaata Qimussrsui's first cancellation even as unavailable vaccinations for sled dogs left some dog-sledding areas excluded in the second, year-2021 cancellation. Greenlandic veterinarians mandate the afore-mentioned vaccinations even as Greenland Dogs must meet appearance, health, lineage, nutrition, residence, stamina and work standards; environmental-tolerance ranges; and vaccination schedules. Sled-dog race mushers need no more than 12 dogs even as Avannaata Qimussersui necessitates basic, minimum gear and a hand-built, low, traditional, wood and lash-constructed sled.
Author Naja Lund Aparico and illustrator Alex Nees occasion sleds more low and wide than long and narrow for winter and spring Seasons by the Lake.

Sled-qamutiik runners prompt such hardwoods as oak (Quercus spp) or walnut (Juglans spp) even as drilled, tied cross-piece napooks pull together a continuous-lashed, thereby self-locking knot.
First and last napooks quarter double-holed qamutiik ("rawhide-lashed-sledge"; Eastern-Canadian Inuktitut ᖃᒧᑏᒃ) runners even as the central napooks queue single holes qualifying each side for continuous lashing. Tittus Mathiassen, Nikolaj Therkildsen, Otto Kristensen, Niels Kristian Vetterlain, Thomas Løvstrøm, Amos Jensen and Ville Siegstad respectively represent year-1989, 1990/1991, 1992/1999, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996/2004/2009 winners. Niels Poulsen, Edvard Samuelson, Abraham Løvstrøm, Egede Filemonsen, Thomas Thygesen, Jørgen Kristensen and Jens Ole Jensen respectively signify year-1997, 1998/2000/2001/2016/2017, 2002, 2003, 2005/2006/2024, 2007/2010/2011/2012/2013, 2008 winners.
Naja Lund Aparico and Alex Nees treasure Seasons by the Lake even as perhaps Nanoq-, Nuka-transmitted sleds triumph after William Jensen, Kristian Lundblad, Milan Mathæussen, Henrik Jensen year-2014/2015, 2021, 2023, 2025 winners.

Sled-dog race attendance agrees with all professions even as Unitedstatesian military also anticipate their applying animal, equipment and physical-exercise aptitudes.

Despite two major storms, the base hosted its annual dog sled race, which awarded the top three winners with a rifle, sled tent and a generator, respectively. Thule AB is located on the northwest coast of Greenland, 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle and approximately 946 miles from the North Pole. It operates the Department of Defense's northernmost deep-water seaport as well as a 10,000-foot runway and associated airfield." Image credit: U.S. Space Force photo by Lt. Col.
