Why are sleds in Seasons by the Lake: Adventures in Greenland by author Naja Lund Aparico and illustrator Alex Nees, Dial Books for Young Readers, Penguin/Random House imprint, March 17, 2026?

Sleds, perhaps built from animal cords and sinew, reindeer and seal hides and walrus and whale bones, bring brothers Minik ("seal-oil") and Nuka ("[older-sibling's-]same-gendered-younger-sibling) outdoors. The first page of the fall-season months September, October, November considers older-brother Minik crossing snowy ground with Greenland-dog Nanoq ("polar-bear") alongside and with his sled behind. The second page depicts younger-brother Nuka seated, with each leg dangling over an opposite side even as he and his sled down into separate snow drifts.

The back side to the authorial Postscript's second page entails another sledding encounter even as younger-brother Nuka enjoys a sled ride enabled by sled-tie haltered Nanoq.

Perhaps Nanoq and Nuka favor subsequent careers as respective musher and sled dog even as their island features, since 1989, the annual-national sled-dog race Avannaata Qimussersua.

Ole Qvist (died Mon., Dec. 9, 2019) generated, in Uummannaq, Uummannaq Island, Avannaata municipality, central-western Greenland, the first sled-dog race as the North Greenlandic Regional Championship. The afore-heralded Greenlandic musher had western Greenland north of the Arctic Circle host all races, with all dogs purebred Greenland Dogs (Greenlandic Kalaallit Qimmiat; Danish Grønlandshund. Avannaata Qimussersui is, since 2021, all Greenland's annual-national sled-dog race even as that championship always involves such Avannaata-region settlements as Kangerluk ("inland-/innermost-fjord/-inlet"), Qeqertarsuaq ("island-great/-large"), Sisimiut ("foxhole-inhabitant-s'").

The COVID-19 pandemic led to Avannaata Qimussrsui's first cancellation even as unavailable vaccinations for sled dogs left some dog-sledding areas excluded in the second, year-2021 cancellation. Greenlandic veterinarians mandate the afore-mentioned vaccinations even as Greenland Dogs must meet appearance, health, lineage, nutrition, residence, stamina and work standards; environmental-tolerance ranges; and vaccination schedules. Sled-dog race mushers need no more than 12 dogs even as Avannaata Qimussersui necessitates basic, minimum gear and a hand-built, low, traditional, wood and lash-constructed sled.
