Summary: Harborside rooms and violent deaths add stayover traffic to Winterkill, anglicized from Vetrarmein, sixth thriller in Ragnar Jónasson’s Dark Iceland sextet.
"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.
The Mennta- og menningarmálaráðuneytið (Romanized Mennta- og menningarmálaráduneytid, Ministry of Education, Science and Culture) accounted for Icelandic police academy operations and standards until Sep. 30, 2016. The University of Akureyri’s Faculty of Social Science accounts for all diplomas in Police Science for all active, all prospective police officers after the Sep. 30, 2016, closing of the Reykjavík-based academy, among whose diploma-holders appears Ari Thór Arason (“eagle thunder eagle’s son”). Ari Thór answers to Akureyri (“sandbank field”) Police Superintendent Selma (“faithfulest, god helmet, good view, happy famous, sun-man”?); Saturday, April 28, 2018, 16:35, image of Iceland's Ministry of Education, Science and Culture (Mennta- og menningarmálaráðuneytið), Sölvhólsgata 4, Reykjavik, Höfuðborgarsvæði (Capital Region), southwestern Iceland: Antony-22, CC BY SA 4.0 International, via Wikimedia Commons |
Harborside rooms and violent deaths add stayover traffic to Winterkill, anglicized from Vetrarmein, sixth thriller in the Dark Iceland sextet about Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur) Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason by Ragnar Jónasson.
Nineteen-year-old daughter Unnur (“to love” or “wave”?) Svavarsdóttirs (“[free, independent southwest German] Swabian’s daughter”) violent death brings Svavar to Siglufjördur (“sailing fjord”) hotel’s beautiful harborside rooms. Svavar circulates to Sigló Hótel (“sailing hotel”), Siglufjarðarkirkja (Romanized Siglufjardarkirkja, Siglufjördur [Lutheran] Church, “sailing fjord church”) and perhaps Town Hall Square-area bakery, fish market and pizzeria. He distances himself from his ex-wife, Salvör, who domiciles on Grundargata (“ground street), around the corner from daughter Unnur’s Aðalgata (Romanized Adalgata, “specialty street”) death scene.
Ensconcing ex-girlfriend Kristín (“Christ-bearer”) and their son, Stefnir (“garland, wreath"), in his Eyrargata (“gravel-bank street”) house ensures scarcest encounters and expenditures by Ari Thór (“eagle thunder”).
Ari Thór flirts with the fair female ski instructor for the one Skarðsdalur (Romanized Skardsdalur, “cleft, pass valley”) slope lesson that he furnishes himself and Stefnir.
Kristín gets Stefnir 24/7, apart one pizza get-together with Akureyri (“sandbank field”) Hospital ex-co-workers, even as Ari Thór gets together with Ugla (“[short-eared] owl [Asio flammeus]”). Fish-plant ex-employee, piano-lesson ex-teacher and nursing home-employed heiress Ugla had a one-night stand who fatally hit her hometown Patreksfjörður (Romanized Patreksfjördur, “patrician fjord”) boyfriend, Ágúst (“magnificent”). A nursing degree interests Ugla, who itinerated to Ísafjörður (Romanized Ísafjördur, “ice fjord”), then to Siglufjördur, where she introduces herself as inhabiting Vestfirðir (Romanized Vestfirdir, Westfjords).
Ari Thór judges Adalgata balcony and, with Ugla, Hlíðarvegur (Romanized Hlídarvegur, “hillside way”) nursing-home violent deaths from Sigló Hótel harborside rooms in Winterkill, anglicized from Vetrarmein.
Héðinsfjarðargöng (Romanized Hédinsfjardargöng, “fur-, skin-jacket fjord”), Múlagöng (“headland”) and Strákagöng (Strakar, “boys[’]”) tunnels and Þjóðvegur 1 (Romanized Thjódvegur, Route 1, “nation[al] road”) keep Kristín Siglufjördur-Akureyri traffic-savvy.
Akureyrarflugvöllur, Reykjavíkurflugvöllur and Siglufjarðarflugvöllur airports link Kristín, Reykjavík (“smoky bay”) Superintendent Tómas (“twin”) and Siglufjördur historian Bjarki (“bearcub”) to Keflavík-Sweden flights, Siglufjördur crimes and Reykjavík conferences. Those three airports mean that Bjarki and Unnur mulled migrating, by Keflavíkurflugvöllur (“Keflavík [baton-, cylinder-, pin-, reel-, roller-, spool-bay] Airport”), to Siglunes (“sailing cape”), Manitoba, Canada. And yet Bjarki and Unnur never navigate namesake, nearby Siglunes, where Salvör’s cousins, father and son Thorleifur (“thunder heir”) senior and junior, nestle as homeowners.
Hávardar (“battle, high, [or] horse guard”) and Guðjón (Romanized Gudjón, “good gracious god”) Helgason (“holy [one’s] son”) separately observe violent deaths in Winterkill, anglicized from Vetrarmein.
Town-edge peregrinations townward put Gudjón proximitous to Bjarki’s place, where Unnur, Jenný’s (“gracious god”) and Sara’s (“lady, princess”) Ólafsfjörður (Romanized Ólafsfjörður, “ancestor[’s] heir”) High peer perished.
Perhaps Gudjón quests the café that qualifies as Sara’s interim employment or the gallery of Rósa (“rose”), wife of Finnbogi’s (“wanderer bow”) successor, Dr. Hersir (“chieftain”). Perhaps Hvanneyrarbraut (“gravel-bank way”) renders Gudjón southward to Hersir’s Hlíðarvegur (Romanized Hlídarvegur, “hillside road”) schoolhouse-renovated nursing home or southeastward to Hersir's residence with his heiress wife. Gudjón perhaps sees Ari Thór’s Eyrargata neighbor, Thormódur (“thunder courage”) Hávardarson, or, south of Suðurgata (Romanized Sudurgata, “south street”), his Reykjavík-lawyer landlords sojourning in harborside rooms.
Ari Thór, in Winterkill, anglicized from Vetrarmein, treks from harborside rooms to Eyrargata, Ugla’s Norðurgata (Romanized Nordurgata, “north street”) apartment and wherever violent deaths take him.

The University of Akureyri arranges for its students to access appropriate instruction in two on-campus buildings, Borgir (“castle, city, [cliff-riddled] rocky hill”) and Sólborg (“sun castle, deliverance, fortification, help, stronghold”). Ólafsfjördur-born artist Kristin E. Hrafnsson (born 1960) assembled his outdoor art piece, Íslandsklukkan (Iceland’s Bell, “The Iceland Clock” literally), alongside the latter. The University attracts to its Norðurslóð (Romanized Nordurslód, “northern trail”) campus students availing themselves of such respective degree and diploma programs as nursing and police science. Perhaps Ari Thór, what with assaulting a teenager and a retired widower, and Ugla, what with attracting a one-night stand who fatally assaulted her boyfriend Ágúst (“magnificent”), avail themselves one day of anger management courses through their respective police-science and nursing-home interests; Sunday, July 25, 2004, 15:34, image of Íslandsklukkan, with Borgir rannsóknarhús (Borgir Laboratory) under construction in background: Bjarki Sigursveinsson (Bjarki S), Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Íslandsklukkan_við_Sólborg.jpeg
