Thermohaline circulation (THC) comprises large-scale ocean circulation's component of large-scale currents driven by global fluxes of freshwater and heat. Thermohaline (Ancient Greek: θερμός, thermós, “warm, hot”) references the variations in salinity and temperature that gradate water density. Terms for thermohaline circulation include global conveyor belt, ocean conveyor belt and meridional overturning circulation (MOC). The slow, few centimeters-per-second movement of the conveyor belt contrasts with the tens to hundreds of centimeters-per-second movements of wind-driven or tidal currents. Estimatingly, "any given cubic of water" requires approximately 1,000 years to complete its journey along the global conveyor belt.

High levels of such heat-trapping gases as carbon dioxide and methane bode the Arctic thaw that builds around and at the Arctic-Ocean, North-Atlantic Ocean island Greenland. Rapid-shifting climate correlates with changing heat and salt content in the thermohaline current ("hot-/warm-brine/-salt"; Greek θερμός ἅλς) even as that current cautiously continues its worldwide circulation. Ice-sheet ice cores delight sample-extracting, sample-studying glaciologists, ice-core scientists, paleoclimatologists even as they describe rapid-changing Greenland climates 6,100 to 5,000, 3,100 to 2,400, 500 years ago.

Perhaps 2.5-3,000,000 (2.5-3 million) years ago the Isthmus of Panama ensued from American continental-uplifting even as Atlantic waters, no longer escaping Pacific-Ocean westward, enabled Gulf-Stream existences.

Our oceans figure greater capacities for heat-storing, moving and releasing than our atmosphere furnishes even as the thermohaline current (THC) flows less vigorously since the 1950s.

Fluctuating differences in sea-level atmospheric pressure generate winds going from the North-Atlantic semi-permanent Subtropical-High pressure center at the Azores High to the Northern-Hemisphere semi-permanent Icelandic-Low center. North-Atlantic winds yearly head sea salt onto 1,500- (4,921.25984-) to 1,700-meter- (5,577.42782-foot) thick Greenland floating and land-based ice sheets between 60 and 80 degrees North latitude. That average thickness sometimes increases to 3,400-plus meters (11,154.8556-plus feet) even as the ice-sheet volume perhaps is 2.85- (683,751.362) to 2.9-million cubic kilometers (685,747 cubic miles).

Greenland chill and Greenland thaw in The Winds of Change by Eugene Linden jeopardize perhaps 1.71 million square kilometers (660,234.691 square miles), as 80-percent ice-sheeted Greenland.

Outlet glaciers and ice streams kindle ice flows from island center coastward even as such kinetics know ice-tongue ends rather than Antarctica-like floating, large ice shelves.

The more sea salt that North-Atlantic winds leave over ice sheets, the more winds log stormier speeds, the more sea ice lounges over larger Northern-Hemisphere areas. Dust particles migrate with sea salt when the most mobile winds move even as wind intensity and speed manifest minimally, if at all, without sea salt. Cool water freezing into sea ice nudges heated, small amounts outward even as cooler, denser, saltier seawater navigating downward nestles among ocean-heat distribution-system engine deep water.

Greenland chill and Greenland thaw in The Winds of Change by Eugene Linden observe light, rainfall-oriented, salt-evaporated freshwater orienting the Gulf-Stream North-Atlantic Current and North-Atlantic Drift.

Arctic thaw and Greenland thaw persist since the world-warmest 1990s in 1,000 years even as deep-water formation presupposes Greenland and Iceland, the Norwegian Sea, off-coastal Antarctica.

The worldwide ocean-conveyor belt quarters such currents as the Gulf Stream and its North-Atlantic Current and its North-Atlantic Drift and such deep water as Denmark Strait. Arctic-Ocean, Baffin-Bay, Davis-Strait, Denmark-Strait, Greenland-Sea, Labrador-Sea, Qeqertarsuup-Tunusua ("Disko-Bay") waters ring Greenland coastlines even as they, their dust, salt and winds react with underwater sill-reclining deep water. Altered warm-water distribution, coastal and open-water rainstorms, increasing surface-level freshwaters, melting glaciers and ice, rising evaporation, pollution and temperatures suggest altered-content, altered-flow deep-water ocean-heat distribution-system engines.
