Puccini’s La Bohème is the May 6, 2023, Saturday matinee radio broadcast, airing at 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time, as the 19th of the 2022-2023 Met Opera season's lineup of 24 Saturday matinee opera broadcasts.
Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924) set his musical score for La Bohème to an Italian libretto co-written by Italian librettists and playwrights Giuseppe Giacosa (Oct. 21, 1847-Sep. 1, 1906) and Luigi Illica (May 9, 1857-Dec. 16, 1919). The librettists sourced their libretto from Scènes de la Vie de Bohème, published as a novel in 1851 by 19th-century French novelist and poet Louis-Henri Murger (March 27, 1822-Jan. 28, 1861). Murger's novel comprised Parisian Latin Quarter-set stories that he had published previously in the literary review Le Corsaire in the 1840s.
Puccini premiered La Bohème Saturday, Feb. 1, 1896, at Teatro Regio (Royal Theatre) in Turin, capital of northwestern Italy's Piedmont region. La Bohème numbered as the third and last Teatro Regio-premiering Puccini opera. Le Villi (The Willis or The Fairies) had premiered Friday, Dec. 26, 1884, at Teatro Regio as a revised, two-act version of Puccini's opera ballet, which had premiered almost seven months earlier, on Saturday, May 31, 1884, at Teatro dal Verme, Milan, Lombardy region, north central Italy. Manon Lescaut had opened Wednesday, Feb. 1, 1893, as Puccini's second Teatro Regio-premiering opera.
The Metropolitan Opera premiere of La Bohème took place Friday, Nov. 9, 1900, at Hazard's Pavilion, Fifth and Olive streets, downtown Los Angeles, Southern California. Puccini's Parisian bohemian opera received 15 performances in the 1900-1901 Met Opera season. Including opening night, 10 of the performances were offered during the opera company's 1900-1901 tour. The seventh (Wednesday, Dec. 26, 1900) through eighth (Saturday, Dec. 29), 10th (Friday, Jan. 11, 1901) through 11th (Monday, Jan. 21) and 13th (Monday, March 18) performances were held at the opera company's first opera house, located at 1411 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan's Garment district.
The 2022-2023 Met Opera season stages Puccini's La Bohème as the 37th revival of the new production debuted by Franco Zeffirelli (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019) in the 1981-1982 season. The Italian film, opera and television director and producer had made his Met Opera debut Friday, March 6, 1964, in the opera company's 67th performance of Falstaff by 19th century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
