The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s ninth week has Glass, Mozart and Puccini operas in continuing performances of Akhnaten, Le Nozze di Figaro, La Bohème and Madama Butterfly.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s ninth week begins with La Bohème by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). The week offers two performances of Puccini’s Paris-themed opera. The week’s first performance takes place as a Sunday matinee, Nov. 17, at 3 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The week’s second performance is slated for Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
The Metropolitan Opera’s season premiere of La Bohème happened in the 2019-2020 season’s fifth week. The season premiere of Italian director Franco Zeffirelli’s revived production took place Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
Akhnaten by American composer Philip Glass receives two performances in the 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s ninth week. The week’s first performance takes place Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7:30 p.m. EST. The week’s second performance happens Saturday, Nov. 23, at 1 p.m.
Akhnaten’s Metropolitan Opera Premiere happened in the 2019-2020 season’s seventh week. The Met Opera Premiere took place Friday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. English stage director Phelim McDermott’s staging debuted during the Met Opera Premiere as a new production.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s ninth week offers two performances of Le Nozze di Figaro by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791). The week’s first performance takes place Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 7:30 p.m. The week’s second performance of Le Nozze di Figaro is slated for Saturday, Nov. 23, at 8 p.m.
Le Nozze di Figaro’s dates in the ninth week number as the opera’s second and third performances in the 2019-2020 Met Opera season. Mozart’s opera had its season premiere in the previous week, on Saturday, Nov. 16. The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s presentation of Le Nozze di Figaro represents the third revival of English director Sir Richard Eyre’s staging.
The season’s ninth week includes a second Puccini opera. Madama Butterfly receives one performance in the season’s ninth week. The week’s sole performance of Madama Butterfly takes place Friday, Nov. 22, at 7:30 p.m.
The Metropolitan Opera’s season premiere of Madama Butterfly occurred in the 2019-2020 season’s third week. The season premiere of Italian director Anthony Minghella’s (Jan. 6, 1954-March 18, 2008) revived production took place Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
The season’s ninth week begins with the second of November’s two Sunday matinees. The month’s first Sunday matinee took place in the eighth week, with the Sunday, Nov. 10, performance of Orfeo ed Euridice by German Classical Era composer Christoph Gluck (July 2, 1714-Nov. 15, 1787).
No performances are scheduled for Monday, Nov. 11. Six performances are scheduled over the ninth week’s last five days, Tuesday through Saturday.
Michael Cooper, a classical music and dance reporter at The New York Times, announced in his Sept. 14, 2018, article that Sunday matinees would be added as regular performances in the 2019-2020 Met Opera season. Sunday matinees are expected to expand audience reach.
The Metropolitan Opera’s general manager, Peter Gelb, described Sunday matinees as “a real game changer.” Mr. Gelb explained that Monday night was New York’s “opera night” until two or three decades ago. “That’s why we still have our opening night galas on Mondays.”
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s first Sunday matinee occurred in the season’s third week. A Sunday matinee, Oct. 6, followed the season’s second week season premiere of Puccini’s Turandot.
The takeaways for the 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s ninth week are that the week begins with November’s second of two Sunday matinees and that the ninth week continues performances of Glass’ Akhnaten, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Puccini’s La Bohème and Madama Butterfly.
