Summary: The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week has Glass, Mozart, Puccini, Tchaikovsky operas, including the season premiere of The Queen of Spades.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week has Glass, Mozart, Puccini, Tchaikovsky operas in continuing performances of Akhnaten, Le Nozze di Figaro and Madama Butterfly and with the season premiere of a revived production of The Queen of Spades.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week begins with Madama Butterfly by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). The week offers one performance of Puccini’s Japan-themed opera. The week’s performance takes place Monday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
The Metropolitan Opera’s season premiere of Madama Butterfly happened in the 2019-2020 season’s third week. The season’s first performance of Italian director Anthony Minghella’s (Jan. 6, 1954-March 18, 2008) revived production took place Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
Two performances of Le Nozze di Figaro by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791) are offered in the 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week. The week’s first performance of Mozart’s Figaro opera takes place Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 7:30 p.m. EST. The week’s second performance happens Saturday, Nov. 30, at 1 p.m.
The Metropolitan Opera’s season premiere of Mozart’s opera occurred in the 2019-2020 season’s eighth week. The season’s revival of English director Sir Richard Eyre’s production took place Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week includes the season premiere of The Queen of Spades by Russian late-Romantic composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (May 7, 1840-Nov. 6, 1893). The season’s first performance of Tchaikovsky’s 10th completed opera takes place Friday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Including the season premiere, The Queen of Spades receives seven performances in the 2019-2020 Met Opera season. After the season premiere, six performances are offered in December. The month’s performances are scheduled for Monday, Dec. 2, at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 21, at 8 p.m.
The season’s performances of The Queen of Spades revive staging by Elijah Moshinsky. The Australian opera director’s staging debuted Oct. 26, 1995, as a new Met Opera production in the opera house’s 35th performance of The Queen of Spades.
Mark Thompson is the production team’s set and costume designer. Paul Pyant is the lighting designer. Choreography is by John Meehan.
The Metropolitan Opera’s most recent staging of The Queen of Spades occurred in 2011. The 2010-2011 Met Opera season’s staging marked the fourth revival of the Moshinsky production. The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s performances number as the production’s fifth revival at the Metropolitan Opera.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week offers one performance of Akhnaten by American composer Philip Glass. The week closes with the performance of Akhnaten Saturday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m.
The Metropolitan Opera Premiere of Akhnaten occurred in the 2019-2020 season’s seventh week. The Met Opera Premiere took place Friday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m. The Met Opera premiere debuted English stage director Phelim McDermott’s staging as a new Met Opera production.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week ushers in the end-of-year holiday season as 2019’s Thanksgiving week. No performances are scheduled for Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 28. The day before Thanksgiving, Wednesday, Nov. 27, is also a dark day of no performances.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week is the second of two Sundays without matinees in November. The month’s two Sunday matinees took place Nov. 10 and Nov. 17, at 3 p.m., with performances of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and Puccini’s La Bohème, respectively. The 2019-2020 Met Opera season includes 16 Sunday matinees.
The takeaways for the 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s 10th week are that Thanksgiving week launches the fifth revival of Australian director Elijah Moshinsky’s staging of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades and that continued performances of Glass’ Akhnaten, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Puccini’s Madama Butterfly are offered.
