Sweet Potatoes, Not Sweet Corn on NCIS: Hawai’i Pirates, Are Hawaiian

Summary: Sweet potatoes, not sweet corn on police procedural series NCIS: Hawai’i episode Pirates, rerunning Jan. 11, 2013, are ancient Hawaiian edibles.

Convolvulaceae (from Latin sōlānum ālis, “nightshade concerning”; and convolvulus –āceae, “vine moth [Eupoecilia ambiguella] caterpillar resembling”) family membership accounts for the morning glory-like appearances of green buds, lavender to lavender-purple or white flowers and purple-veined green leaves of sweet potatoes during their flowering months from November through April; Friday, Nov. 15, 2019, 07:04, image of "Flowers, buds, and leaves that look like morning glory," Vythiri, Wayanad district, northeastern Kerala state, southwestern India: Dinesh Valke from Thane, India, CC BY SA 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

Sweet potatoes, not sweet corn on police procedural series NCIS: Hawai’i episode Pirates, first-season debuting March 7, 2022, and second-season rerunning Oct. 31, 2022, and Jan. 11, 2013, are ancient Hawaiian edibles.
The 15th first-season episode, as 15th episode overall, brings up kahuku (from Hawaiian ka, “the”; huku, “projection [point of northeasternmost Oahu (from Hawaiian O’ahu, “gathering place”)]). No corns counted among original comestibles carried by Polynesian ancestors of Hawaiian archipelago-ists or cultivated by Hawaiian islanders before European contacts from the 15th century onward. Ancient Hawaiian diets drew upon such fruits and vegetables as breadfruit (‘ulu), coconut (niu), seaweed (limu), sweet potatoes (‘uala), taro (kalo) and tree fern (hāpuʻu ʻiʻi).
Sweet potatoes entailed baking grated with coconut cream as piele pudding, cooking with coconut milk as ko’ele palau and boiling, roasting, steaming as underground rock-heated vegetables.

Perhaps Polynesian ancestors of ancient Hawaiian islanders added to their Ipomoea batatas (sweet potato, Ipomoea batatas (from Greek ἴψ ὅμοιος, “woodworm-resembling”; and Taíno [Caribbean language] batata, “potato”) populations by root or stem cuttings, seeds and slips. Twenty-first-century commercial, home-gardening and non-commercial cultivators perhaps adopt cutting and slip over seed propagation; Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021, 00:11, image of "Sweet potato seeds. The Tracheophyte and the Angiosperm (from Greek τραχεῖα φυτά, “windpipe plant”; ἀγγεῖον σπέρμα, “receptacle seed”) clade member flourishes from root or stem cuttings and from seeds.
The Eudicot and the Asterid (from Greek δι-, “two” and κοτυληδών, “cup-shaped cavity”; ἀστήρ, “star”) clade member guards adventitious roots at stem nodes and tuberous roots. The Solanales order and the Convolvulaceae (from Latin sōlānum ālis, “nightshade concerning”; and convolvulus –āceae, “vine moth [Eupoecilia ambiguella] caterpillar resembling”) family member has woody tissue. Ipomoea batatas, investigated by Carl Linnaeus (May 23, 1707-Jan. 10, 1778) and then by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck (Aug. 1, 1744-Dec. 18, 1829), is an herbaceous perennial vine.
Sweet potatoes, not sweet corn on NCIS: Hawai’i Pirates, journey as seeds from clustered, cross-pollinated, hermaphrodite (from Greek Ἑρμῆς Ἀφροδίτη, “[male] Hermes [and female] Aphrodite”) flowers.

Traditional Hawaiians amass, even as ancient Hawaiians amassed, their boiled, roasted, steamed sweet potatoes (‘uala) in wooden bowls from Indian tulip, milo, Pacific rosewood, portia (Thespesia populnea) tree wood. Ground nuts (kukui), salt (pa'akai), seaweed (limu) and ko (sugarcane) amounted to appreciated condiments for fish such as limpets (opihi) and sea urchins (wana); meats such as chicken (moa), dog ('ilio) and pig (pua'a); and vegetables such as sweet potatoes; Thursday, June 22, 2006, 11:30, image of Thespesia populnea (Milo), habit, Kanaha Beach, Maui, Hawaii: Forest & Kim Starr, CC BY 3.0 Unported, via Wikimedia Commons

Leaf axils (stem-stalk, stalk-branch unions, from Latin āxilla, “armpit”) keep upright fine-haired, spiky, taper-tipped, 0.39- to 0.59-inch- (10- to 15-millimeter-) long sepals beneath five-fused, short-stalked petals.
Ipomoea batatas (from Greek ἴψ ὅμοιος, “woodworm-resembling”; and Taíno [Caribbean language] batata, “potato”) flowers lodge funnel-shaped, lavender to lavender-purple, 0.16- to 0.28-inch- (4- to 7-millimeter-) crowns. They manifest dark throat-enclosed, unequal-lengthed stamens (from Latin stāmen, “thread”) with glandular filaments; and two-chamber ovaries with short styluses (stigma-maintaining stalk, from Latin stylus, “stake”). They nestle among alternate-niched 2- to 5.1-inch (5.08- to 12.95-centimeter) blades, 5- to 20-inch (12.7- to 50.8-centimeter) stalks and 1.64- to 13.12-foot (0.5- to 4-meter) stems.
Sweet potatoes, not sweet corn on NCIS: Hawai’i Pirates, offer egg- to kidney- to heart-shaped, round- to spear- or triangle-shaped leaves occupying ground-occurring, main, node-rooting stems.

Breadfruit ('ulu), kava ('awa), octopus (he'e) and sweet potato ('uala) always appeared at the altars and tables appointed for Kanaloa, Kāne, Kū and Lono, as the four major Hawaiian gods and as respective gods of oceans, creation, war and fertility. Ancient Hawaiians particularly appreciated Lono as "the sweet potato god"; Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, 12:48, image of "Figure of Lono-71.1879.10.11," Musée du Quai Branly -- Jacques Chirac, Paris, France: Rama, CC BY-SA 3.0 France, via Wikimedia Commons

Sweet potato possesses green leaves with anthocyanin-purpled leaf-vein areas; bare or rare-haired surfaces; entire to cut, divided, lobed or toothed edges; and pointed or rounded tips.
Seeds germinated 2 months after planting queue beige-, pink-, purple-, red-, violet-, white-, yellow-fleshed, brown-, orange-, purple-, red-, yellow-skinned roots another 2 to 9 months later. They require under 11 hours of daily sunlight over lightweight, medium-textured, sandy loam to super-sandy, well-drained soils whose pH ranges between acidic 4.5 and neutral 7.0. Average annual 30- to 39-inch (762- to 990.6-millimeter) rainfall, temperatures of 24 degrees Celsius (75.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and warm nights shelter aluminum-, drought-, flood-intolerant sweet potatoes.
The 8,000-year-old, central Mexico-descended sweet corn on NCIS: Hawai’i Pirates and the 15,000-year-old Yucatan-descended sweet potatoes respectively most anciently tackle Hawaiian soils since 1826 and 500.
