Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, fifth thriller in the Dark Iceland sextet about Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur) Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason by author Ragnar Jónasson, admits northern landscapes akin to Jón Stefánsson paintings.

The fifth thriller brings in Jón Stefánsson (Feb. 22, 1881-Nov. 19, 1962) paintings by the landscape beautifying Ari Thór Arason’s (“eagle thunder eagle’s son”) grandmother’s apartment. Horses along the road conducting Ari Thór and girlfriend Kristín (“Christ-bearer”) from Siglufjördur, past Sauðarkrókur (Romanized Saudarkrókur, “sheep river-hook”), to Blönduós (“mixed[-water] river-mouth”) convoke Stefánsson-painted equines. Perhaps they double horses dominating such oil paintings on canvas as Heste I landskab (“Horses and Landscape”), Údegangshest (“Horse in Winter”) and Útigangshestar (“Horses in Winter”).

Jón Stefánsson excelled at cityscapes such as Akureyri en sommernat (“Akureyri One Summer Night”) and land and waterscapes such as Bláfell, 1942 (“Blue [Isolated] Mountain, 1942”).

Stefánsson paintings feature such still lifes as Opstilling med kande og æbler (“Arrangement with Pitcher and Apples”) and Tulipaner I en vase (“Tulips in a Vase”).

His Gömul Kona (“Elderly Woman”), Kona á Peysufötum (“Woman Wearing the National Costume”), Mjaltastúlka (“Milkmaid”) and Smaladrengur (“Shepherd”) sketches guided Jón Stefánsson’s Engjafolk (“Country People) mural. His paintings honor cityscapes, country folk, landscapes, land and waterscapes, still-life flowers and fruits and waterscapes even as Jón Stefánsson honored himself in three famous self-portraits. Perhaps the most iconic image by Jón Stefánsson is his Hraunteigur við Heklu (“Lava Field at Hekla”), cloud-covered stratovolcano immortalized on 1978-issued Ísland 1000 postage stamps.

Kristín journeys in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, to Saudarkrókur, where northern landscapes in Jón Stefánsson paintings join the lived cityscapes and landscapes in his hometown life.

His father Stefán Jónson’s (died 1910) career as Saudarkrókur merchant and his mother Ólöf HallgrÍmsdóttir’s as Akureyri goldsmith perhaps kindled Jón Stefánsson knowing art and engineering.

A bandaged, injured, tubercular right hand limited his art submissions, between ages 13 and 19, to the magazines Illustredet Tidende (“Illustrated Times”) and Nordstjernen (“North Star”). Jón (“god is gracious”) Stefánsson (“garland’s son”) matriculated, as Latínuskólinn (“Latin School” predecessor of Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík [Reykjavík Junior College]) graduate, in 1900 at Copenhagen, Denmark. Bridges and piers nurtured his nestling into civil engineering within the København (Copenhagen, “merchants’ harbor” literally) educational system even as he navigated the numerous port-city museums.

Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, offers northern landscapes that overflow into Jón Stefánsson paintings, whose orientation occurs after his Tekniske Selskabs Skole (“Technical Society’s School”) years (1903-1904).

Jón Stefánsson presented himself at Danish painter Kristian Zahrtmann’s (March 31, 1843-June 22, 1917) school (1905-1908) and then at Norway’s Lillehammer (“little rocky hill”) artist colony.

He quested (1908/1909? to 1912?) Paris-based instruction at the Boulevard des Invalides school under draughtsman, painter, printmaker and sculptor Henri Matisse (Dec. 31, 1869-Nov. 3, 1954). He relocated to Iceland the year 1912-1913, then to Copenhagen, from which he returned every summer to Reykjavík or the countryside, apart the war years 1937-1941. He selected as permanent residence his property in Höfuðborgarsvæðið’s (Romanized Höfudborgarsvaedid, Greater Reykjavík, “The Capital Region” literally) Bergstaðastræti (Romanized Bergstadastraeti, “highlands, mountain, precipice place street”) area.

The northern landscapes in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, trigger so many of the Jón Stefánsson paintings treasured by Listasafn Íslands (“National Gallery of Iceland”) in Reykjavík.

Akureyri ("sandbank field") admits to an appealing, attractive photogenicity. The fifth-largest municipality -- after Reykjavík ("smoky bay"), Hafnarfjörður (Romanized Reykjavík, Hafnarfjördur, "harbor fjord"), Reykjanesbær (Romanized Reykjanesbaer, "smoky cape [or] headland [or] promontory farm [or] town") and Kópavogur ("seal-pup inlet") -- afforded Jón ("god is gracious") Stefánsson's ("garland[-bearer's] son" or "wreath[-bearer's] son") parents a comfortable lifestyle in Sauðarkrókur (Romanized Saudarkrókur, “sheep river-hook”). It allowed Jón Stefánsson's mother, Ólöf ("ancestor['s] legacy") HallgrÍmsdóttir ("rock [or] slate [or] stoneface-masked [or] helmeted [one's] daughter"), her career as professional goldsmith, alongside husband Stefán Jónson's ("garland[-bearing] gracious god's son" or "wreath[-bearing] gracious god's son") as Saudarkrókur merchant.
