Axel Sveinsson lighthouses add jobs and attract tourists in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, fifth thriller in the Dark Iceland sextet about Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur) Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason by Ragnar Jónasson.

The fifth thriller braves blustery weather around a beautiful lighthouse by Axel Sveinsson (April 3, 1896-Aug. 12, 1957), a bedeviled rock face and a bleak building. The Axel (“father peace”) Sveinsson (“free servant’s, herdsman’s [or] young man’s son”) lighthouse calls for Whiteout’s lighthouse keepers Kári (“curly-haired, obstinate [or] reluctant”) and Óskar (“enemy”). Kálfshamarsviti (“Kálfshamarsvík lighthouse”) designates the Axel Sveinsson lighthouse that draws tourists to Blönduós (“mixed[-water] river] mouth”), Kálfshamarsvík (“calf-cliff bay”) and Sauðárkrókur (Romanized Saudárkrókur, “sheep river-hook”) economies.

The Axel Sveinsson lighthouse establishes the eastern side of 50-kilometer- (31.07-mile-) wide, 100-kilometer- (62.14-mile-) long, 217-meter- (711.94-foot-) deep Húnaflói (“bear-cub bay, gulf [or] marshy ground”) bay.

The Kálfshamarsviti figures as admiralty number L4635 in the cartographic, hydrographic, navigational system of the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office in Taunton, Somerset County, South West England.

The Axel Sveinsson lighthouse’s black vertical panels, red lantern house and white square tower go gracefully with the area cove’s cooled- and cracked-lava, six-sided basalt columns. The Kálfshamarsviti has a 21-meter- (68.89-foot-) high focal plane, as the height of the beam center above the high-water surface, and a 16-meter- (52.49-foot-) high tower. Such Axel Sveinsson lighthouses as Garðskagaviti (Romanized Gardskagaviti), Hólmsbergsviti, Knarrarós, Vattarnes and Þrídrangaviti (Romanized Thrídrangaviti), like his Kálfshamarsviti, still illuminate their respective 21st-century land and waterscapes.

The Kálfshamarsviti, from 1942 onward, in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, juggles, just like his other active Axel Sveinsson lighthouses, jobs for locals and journeys by tourists.

Reykjavík (“smoky bay”) Detective Superintendent Tómas (“twin”) and Siglufjördur (“sailing fjord”) policeman Ari Thór (“eagle thunder”) know well the inverted cross in the Kálfshamarsviti doorway stonework.

Tómas likes, perhaps as much as the lighthouse exterior, white-painted walls whose elongated, narrow windows with thick-glazed glass let in light without letting insiders look outside. The entrance-level floor maintains a wooden bench under the windows even as the main spiral staircase-supported wall and two walls respectively manifest low handrails and shelving. A third landing, 10 meters (32.81 feet) above the concrete, entry-level flooring, nestles just below a set of steps to fourth-landing batteries and electrical fuse board.

The Kálfshamarsviti in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, like other active Axel Sveinsson lighthouses, offers its keeper, not its tourists, jobs and stairway-accessed balcony and lantern-house views.

Perhaps rugged birthscapes at Bergsholt (“rock hillock”), Staðarsveit (Romanized Stadarsveit, “place known”) Snæfellsnessýslu (Romanized Snaefellsnessýslu, “snow mountain waterfall headland district”) County prompted Axel Sveinsson's engineering profession.

Axel Sveinsson, Sveinn Bjarnason’s (“bear’s son”) and Sigríður (Romanized Sigridur, “victory beloved”) Magnusdóttir’s (“great [one’s] daughter”) son, quit Copenhagen, Denmark, as civil engineering graduate in 1927. Wives Aðalbjorg Sigurbjornsdóttir, Sigurbjorn Bjornsson’s and Margret Sigurðardóttir’s daughter, and Guðrun Olafia Sigurðardóttir, Sigurður Ólafsson’s and Solveig Unadóttir’s daughter, rendered Axel son Hulda and daughter Solveig. Wife Oddny Lára Emilia Petursdóttir, Pétur Þorsteinsson’s and Hlif Bogadóttir Smith’s daughter, shared daughter Hlif Borghildur Axelsdóttir and sons Bjarni Magnus and Hallgrimur Axelsson with Axel.

Axel Sveinsson lighthouses trigger jobs for locals like those in Whiteout, anglicized from Andkör, in lighthouse-keeping and property-caretaking and most lucratively with Icelandic and international tourists.

The Knarrarósviti (Knarrarós lighthouse, "[large medieval Nordic] merchant ship['s] estuary" literally) of 1938-1939 adopts the art nouveau ("art new" literally), functionalist architecture of Guðjón ("good god is gracious") Samúelsson ("god's name" or "god has hearkened to a mother praying for a son"). Samúelsson (April 16, 1887-April 25, 1950) architecture allows the square, 26.2-meter- (85.96-foot-) high, two-staged lighthouse 22-meter- (72.18-foot-) high unpainted walls apart black vertical panels that appear like black vertical stripes alongside each window and its lantern house with a 30-meter (98.43-foot) focal range.
