Po’ouli Going Extinct Applies as Much as NCIS: Hawai’i to Curtain Call

Summary: Po'ouli going extinct applies as much as police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i to Curtain Call, which entitles the latter’s season 2 episode 8.

"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.

Po’ouli (from Hawaiian po’o uli, “head black”) Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers abided on the wetter side of Maui (from Hawaiian maui, “left-hand side”?) island, Hawaii (from Hawaiian ha wai ‘i, “breath lifeforce supreme”) state until perhaps sometime in or after 2004. Habitat degradation and loss; mosquito-vectored diseases such as avian malaria; and non-native mammals such as pigs (Sus), rats (Rattus) and small Asian mongooses (Urba auropunctata) account for population attrition from 100 to 200 in 1973 to 2 in 2004. Non-native garlic snails (Oxychilus alliarius) account for population attrition of native land-snail prey; 1997 image of adult male po'ouli in Hanawi Natural Area Reserve, Haleakala north flank, East Maui County, in Paul E. Baker, "Status and Distribution of the Po'ouli in the Hanawi Natural Area Reserve Between December 1995 and June 1997," Studies in Avian Biology, no. 22 (2001), Figure 1, page 145: Paul E. Po'ouli going extinct applies as much as police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i to Curtain Call, which entitles season 2 episode 8 debuted Sunday, Nov. 21, 2022, rerun Monday, April 24, 2023.
The 30th episode overall, by director Christine Moore and writer Yakira Chambers, beckons its audience into community-theater moonlighting by a Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Naval officer. Cherishing community theater commands the episode title when commitment configures into casualty even as curtain call in its finality convokes animal and plant extinctions. Curtain call defers to audience delight by displaying all cast members at performance end or audience depression by delay or end from backstage accident or death.
The phrase “Curtain call!” evokes Extinction Obituary: Why Experts Weep for the Quiet and Beautiful Hawaiian Po’ouli by Helen Sullivan for The Guardian May 4, 2022.

Their notochord (from Greek νῶτον, “back(part of body)cord” via Latin noto-]”) facilitated Chordata (from Greek χορδή, “guts” via Latin chorda, “[having a noto]cord") phylum members flying.
The Aves (from Latin avis, “bird”) class member perhaps gestated two to four eggs for perhaps maximally 14-day incubations by mothers only in cup-shaped, tree-secured nests. The Passeriformes (from Latin passer fōrma, “sparrow shape” via Latin -fōrmis) order member perhaps had the brown-gray-speckled, oval to elliptical, plain white eggs of many honeycreepers. Fringillidae (from Latin fringilla -idæ, “finch-resembling”) family membership perhaps involved both their parents with hatchling newborns, nestling 1- to 14-, 14-day-plus-olds and fledgling 14- to 24-day-olds.
Curtain Call jeopardizes community theater in NCIS: Hawai’i and judges po’ouli (from Hawaiian po’o uli, “head black”) going extinct in Maui (from Hawaiian maui, “left-hand side”).

Tonnie L. C. Casey and James D. Jacobi of University of Hawaii and Bernice Pauahi Museum achieved the first taxonomic analysis of po’ouli Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers Aug. 2, 1974. They acknowledge the finch- and sparrow-like bird as 135 millimeters (5.32 inches) long, with a 74-millimeter -(2.91-inch-) long wing, 38-millimeter- (1.49-inch-) long tail, 15-millimeter- (.059-inch-) long culmen (bird-bill dorsal ridge, from Latin culmen, “peak, roof, summit, top”) and 27-millimeter- (1.06-inch-) long tarsus (from Latin tarsus, “flat part of the foot”). They actualize for their audience po’ouli Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers as with dull-black forehead and chin mask from eyes backward; buff-white sides of head and throat and under-sides; brown-cinnamon-white wash from nape backward; black-brown-gray upper-sides; gray-washed breast; bright brown-cinnamon-washed upper-tail coverts and feathers; black-brown-slate wing quills apart brown-cinnamon-white outer vanes; dull brown-red-washed sides and under-tail coverts; brown-cinnamon-white flanks; and black-brown legs and feet. The iris adds more black-brown coloring. The lower mandible admits a shell-pink tip in contrast to the otherwise all-black bill. Perhaps the open beak allows the human perch a rare "chik" vocalization "uttered sharply and harshly" (Casey and Jacobi:223); view of dorsal plumage of adult male po'ouli, captured Jan. 15, 1997, in Hanawi Natural Area Reserve, measured, photographed and then released, as first live po'ouli capture, in Paul E. Baker, "A Description of the First Live Poouli Captured," The Wilson Bulletin, vol. 110, no. 3 (September 1998), frontispiece: Paul E. Baker/USFWS (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service), Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Carduelinae (from Latin carduus -ēlis -īnae, “artichoke-, wild thistle-ful pertaining to” via Latin carduēlis, “goldfinch, thistlefinch”) subfamily membership perhaps kindled a 5- to 12-year life cycle.
The Melamprosops phaeosoma (from Greek μέλας πρόσωπο, “black face” and φαιός σώμα, “brown-gray body”) genus and species member perhaps logged physical and sexual maturity as one-year-olds. Juvenile po’ouli Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers, monitored taxonomically by Tonnie L. C. Casey and James D. Jacobi in 1974, manifested smaller masks without silvery-gray and buff underparts. Mature po’ouli Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers netted black, broad masks from their necks crownward up, from their beaks backward past their eyes; brown upper-sides, and gray-white undersides.
Po’ouli Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers occupied Maui habitats even as community theater in Curtain Call on NCIS: Hawai’i occurs on Oahu (from Hawaiian o’ahu, “the gathering place”).

University of Hawai’i at Mānoa students with the Hana Rainforest Project of University of Hawai’i at Hilo, Hawaii, perceived black-billed, 5.5-inch- (13.97-centimeter-) long, pale-legged, white-throated honeycreepers.
A forested, remote, 6,500-foot (1,980-meter) elevation above sea level queued Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers, quested taxonomically by Tonnie L. C. Casey and James D. Jacobi in 1974. ‘Ōhi’a lehua (Hawaiian myrtle, Metrosideros polymorpha) forests with kanawao (Hawaiian hydrangea, Broussaissea arguta) and kāwa’u (Hawaiian holy, Ilex anomala) mixed-shrub and tree understories reared insect prey. Perhaps surviving po’ouli sought higher altitudes before International Union for Conservation of Nature and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service signaled their extinction in 2019 and 2021.
Higher-elevation Haleakala National Park and Hanawi Natural Area Reserve perhaps treasure po’ouli Hawaiian black-faced honeycreepers not terminated by the Curtain Call of disease and non-native predators.
