Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer is the June 10, 2023, Saturday matinee radio broadcast, airing at 1:00 p.m., Eastern Time, as the 24th of the 2022-2023 Met Opera season's lineup of 24 Saturday matinee opera broadcasts.
Nineteenth-century German composer and librettist Wilhelm Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813-Feb. 13, 1883) set his musical score for Der Fliegende Holländer to his own German libretto. His sourced his libretto from a novel, Aus den Memoiren des Herrn von Schnabelewopski (The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski), published in 1834 by 19th-century German writer Heinrich Heine (Dec. 13, 1797-Feb. 17, 1856). Heine wrote his novel as an ironic retelling of the legend of a ghost sea captain whose release from a curse of eternal roaming depends upon the love of a faithful woman.
Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer premiered Monday, Jan. 2, 1843, at Königliches Hoftheater (Royal Court Theatre), located in the historic center of Dresden, Saxony, east central Germany. Der Fliegende Holländer numbered as the second of three Wagner operas with Königliches Hoftheater, Dresden, premieres. Rienzi, der letzte der Tribunen ("Rienzi, the Last of the Tribunes") had premiered Thursday, Oct. 20, 1842. Tannhäuser (German full title: Tannhäuser und der Sängerkrieg auf Wartburg, "Tannhäuser and the Minnesängers' Contest at Wartburg") premiered Sunday, Oct. 19, 1845.
The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Der Fliegende Holländer took place Wednesday, Nov. 27, 1889, at the opera company's first opera house, located at 1411 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan's Garment District. The opera received seven performances in the 1889-1890 season.
The 2022-2023 Met Opera season stages Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer as the first revival of the new production that François Girard debuted Monday, March 2, 2020, in the opera company's 160th performance of Wagner's Norwegian coast-set ghostly, redemptive opera. Five of the new production's eight scheduled performances in the 2019-2020 season were cancelled because of Covid-19 virus pandemic. The French Canadian director had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, in the opera company's 289th performance of Wagner's Parsifal.
Der Fliegende Holländer receives four performances in the 2022-2023 season. The opera's first two performances took place Tuesday, May 30, at 8:00 p.m., Eastern Time, and Saturday, June 3, at 8:30 p.m. The third and fourth, closing performances are scheduled for Wednesday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m., and Saturday matinee radio broadcast June 10 at 1:00 p.m.

The Polish bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, March 14, 2019, as Alberich in the opera company's 169th performance of Wagner's Das Rheingold.

The Ukrainian bass made his Metropolitan Opera debut Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, as Zaccaria in the opera company’s 54th performance of Nabucco by Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Eric Cutler appears in all performances as huntsman Erik, whom Senta rejects as suitor in favor of the Dutch captain. The American tenor had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Oct. 13, 2000, as the First Prisoner in the opera company's 205th performance of Fidelio by German composer and pianist Ludwig van Beethoven (bapt. Dec. 17, 1770-March 26, 1827).

American lighting designer David Finn, projection designer Peter Flaherty and French-Canadian dramaturg Serge Lamothe had made their Met Opera debuts Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, along with their director, in the debut of François Girard's new production of Wagner's Parsifal, during the opera company's 289th Parsifal performance. Hong Kongese choreographer and director Carolyn Choa had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Sep. 25, 2006, in the opera company's 799th performance of Madama Butterfly by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924).
