Summary: Winterkill anglicizes what Jean-Christophe Salaün Frenchified as Sigló, from Vetrarmein, sixth thriller in author Ragnar Jónasson’s Dark Iceland sextet.
"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.
Winterkill, by David Warriner, anglicizes literally what Jean-Christophe Salaün Frenchified non-literally as Sigló, from Vetrarmein, sixth thriller in the Dark Iceland sextet about Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur, “sailing fjord”) by author Ragnar Jónasson.
Jean-Christophe Salaün became the third, fourth or fifth translator to bring Icelandic-language books by author, copyright-law attorney and professor Ragnar Jónasson into the French-language book market. Ombeline Marchon and Philippe Reilly respectively completed four and two translations into French from the English editions of six thrillers constructed in Icelandic by Ragnar Jónasson. Copyright pages to the French editions, through Éditions La Martinière of Paris, France, to Hidden Iceland trilogy books two and three do not display translator names.
Reilly effectuated Snjór (“snow”) from Snowblind (Snjóblinda), Nátt (“night”) from Blackout (Myrknætti) and Mörk (“dark”) from Nightblind (Náttblinda) as Dark Iceland thrillers 1, 2 and 4.
Marchon furnished Sótt (“illness”) from Rupture (Rof) and Vík (“bay”) from Whiteout (Andköf) before Reilly’s La Dame de Reykjavík (“lady from Reykjavik”) from The Darkness (Dimma).
Perhaps one of the two above-mentioned translators, perhaps yet another translator from English to French anonymously generated L'Île au secret (“secret island”) from The Island (Drungi). The copyright page has no hint as to the anonymous English-French or Icelandic-French translator who harvested La dernière tempête (“the last storm”) from The Mist (Mistur). Online information nevertheless includes La dernière tempête, as La dame de Reykjavík #3 (“The Lady From Reykjavík [Hidden Iceland series book] #3”), among Jean-Christophe Salaün translations.
Dix âmes, pas plus (“10 souls, no more”) from The Girl Who Died (Þorþið) joins, as recentest Jean-Christophe Salaün translations, Sigló (“Siggie”?), Frenchified from Winterkill (Vetrarmein).
Jean-Christophe Salaün knows French natively; English and Icelandic through study and travel; perhaps Breton through ancestral biogeography; and perhaps Norman French through residence, study and work.
The modern Breton surname Salaün, from Old Breton Salamun and Middle Breton Salavun, links to the Hebrew name שְׁלֹמֹה (Shelomoh, “Solomon”), from Hebrew שָׁלוֹם (shalom, "peace"). Jean-Christophe Salaün may descend from Salaün, Count of Rennes and Nantes (852-874), Duke (857-874) and King (868-874) of Brittany and ruler of Avranches and Coutances (867-874). Salaün roue Breizh (“Salomon Breton king” literally, 810?-June 25/28, 874), with major shrine Plélan Church Monastery, Pithiviers Saint-Salomon, Vannes, Brittany, numbers among Catholic Church martyred saints.
The University of Caen undergraduate B.A. in English studies in Norman northwest France, and University of Iceland programs occasion Jean-Christophe Salaün Frenchifying Sigló from Winterkill (Vetrarmein).
Háskóli Íslands (University of Iceland) provided Jean-Christophe Salaün, within six years, first with Icelandic second-language proficiency and then with masters-level proficiency in 2012 in translation studies.
Jean-Christophe Salaün qualified as Pierre-François Caillé Prize for Translation 2014 awardee for Frenchifying Hallgrímur Helgason’s (“stone-masked holy’s son”) Konan við 1000° into La Femme à 1000°. Icelandic-French translations result in his participation in the University of Iceland-led online dictionary project and his Icelandic language and literature professorship at the University of Caen. They serve French-language readers Icelandic stories by Eva Björg Ægisdóttir, Soffía Bjarnadóttir, Kristín Eiríksdóttir, Hallgrímur Helgason, Dagur Hjartarson, Audur Jonsdottir, Jon Ottar Olafsson and Lilja Sigurðardóttir.
Vetrarmein by Icelandic author Ragnar Jónasson triggered Sigló by Icelandic-French translator Jean-Christophe Salaün, to whose translation English translator David Warriner turned for Winterkill, to triple-crown 2020.

Perhaps Salaün roue Breizh (“Salomon Breton king” literally, 810?-June 25/28, 874) accounts for the Breton/Hebrew surname of Icelandic-French translator Jean-Christophe Salaün. Salaün acted as Count of Rennes and Nantes (852-874), Duke (857-874) and King (868-874) of Brittany and ruler of Avranches and Coutances (867-874). Breton people admire him as Catholic Church martyr and saint addressed as Sant Salaün ("Saint Solomon"); "Procession des saints de Bretagne," fresco, painted in choir ambulatory of Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rennes, eastern Brittany, between 1871 and 1876, by Alphonse François Le Hénaff (July 28, 1821-Aug. 29, 1884), places "S. Salomon" (blue cloak, knee-length tunic) in center: Public Domain (CC0 1.0), via Wikimedia Commons @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Procession_des_saints_de_Bretagne_-_diocèse_de_Rennes,_cathédrale_saint_Pierre,_Rennes,_France.jpg
Jean-Christophe Salaün acknowledges the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós ("Victory Rose") as awakening an abiding admiration and affection for Icelandic culture, language and literature. He appreciates the Reykjavík ("smoky bay") musicians for their music, musical instruments and vocals getting him through a particularly awful night as an insomniac adolescent; Wednesday, June 8, 2022, image of Sigur Rós in performance at Boch Center's Wang Theatre, Boston, eastern coastal Massachusetts: Ragnaar Bastiaan from Boston, MA, USA, Public Domain Mark 1.0, via Wikimedia Commons @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sigur_Rós_at_the_Wang_Theater_in_Boston_(52132146447).jpg: Ragnaar Bastiaan, Public Domain, via Flickr @ https://www.flickr.com/photos/travelingbuddha/52132146447/
