The world premiere of The Hours by Kevin Puts in the 2022-2023 season added a fifth opera to English stage director Phelim McDermott's directorial portfolio at the Metropolitan Opera.
Phelim McDermott (born Aug. 21, 1963) had made his Met Opera debut Friday, April 11, 2008, in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Satyagraha by American composer Philip Glass (born Jan. 31, 1937). McDermott's Satyagraha production team comprised Julian Crouch as associate director and set designer; Kevin Pollard as costume designer; Paule Constable as lighting designer; and Leo Warner, Mark Grimmer and their production company, 59 Productions, as video designers. The production team members all made their Met Opera debuts, along with their director, in Satyagraha's world premiere.
