Nói Síríus (Noah Sirius [brightest night-sky star], "comfort burning" or "rest scorching" or "small vessel burning" or "small vessel scorching" literally?) accommodates Icelander appreciation of chocolate bars, breath-fresheners, Christmas candies, drops, Easter eggs, pastilles ("lozenges") and sugar twists. Hot chocolate awes Easter crowds in a downtown café in Winterkill, anglicized from Sigló, last thriller in the Dark Iceland series about Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur) Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason by Ragnar Jónasson.

Sara (“lady, princess”), study buddy of dead 19-year-old Unnur (“to love” or “wave”?) Svavarsdóttir (“[southwest German] Swabian warrior’s daughter”), becomes a café worker during high-school holidays. She converses about Unnur with Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur, “sailing fjord”) Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason (“eagle thunder eagle’s son”) over the downtown café’s cherished hot chocolate. The delicious drink delights Ari Thór and draws chocolate-drinking locals and tourists there even as Ari Thór otherwise decides to drink elsewhere bar- and home-made chocolate.

Ari Thór elects bar- over café- or home-made hot chocolate once eating alone and once with girlfriend Kristín (“Christ-bearer”) and their three-year-old son, Stefnir (“garland, wreath”).

Ari Thór favors black tea, which former fish-plant factory and office worker Ugla (“owl”) furnishes, as Siglufjördur care home day-shift, new-hire employee, in the staff kitchen.

Ari Thór gets black coffee, because Thorleifur (“thunder legacy”) junior never gives any tea, and Reverend Eggert (“weapon-edge strong”) gets milky, sugarless coffee from Thorleifur senior. Nothing hints of anyone else having milky coffee apart a rack holding milk bottles in Unnur’s parents Salvör’s (“sun spring”) and Svavar’s (“Swabian [southwest German]”) basement. Ari Thór, Unnur’s classmate Jenný and Kristín ingest coffee without milk, sugar or treats even as coffee with biscuits invigorates historian Bjarki’s (“bearcub”) neighbor Jónína (“dove”).

Ari Thór journeys once for café and twice for hotel hot chocolate and once for bakery and once for hotel coffees in Winterkill, anglicized from Sigló.

Buttered bread, cinnamon buns and chocolate Easter eggs respectively kindle coffee, not hot chocolate, drinks by Kristín, by Ari Thór and by Kristín and Ari Thór.

Perhaps Kristín likes caffè espresso (“coffee pressed out [under pressure]”) as much as Ari Thór and as artist and care-home owner Hersir’s (“chieftain”) wife Rosa (“rose”). Ari Thór nevertheless marks his new espresso machine for himself at the police station without moving the old-fashioned Italian stovetop espresso maker back home for Kristín. Cinnamon buns, which he names hnútar (“knot”), not snúður (Romanized snúdur, “twist”), and sírópskökur (“syrup cookies”) number among what he nibbles on without Kristín and Stefnir.

Ari Thór in Winterkill, anglicized from Sigló, never offers cinnamon buns or syrup cookies to Stefnir, for whom Kristín orders ordinary kleinur (“doughnuts”) with orange juice.

Previous Akureyri (“sandbank field”) colleagues provide takeaway pizza that Kristín perhaps preserves as refrigerated slices even as Ari Thór another evening purchases takeaway pizza for himself.

Dried fish and toasted slices queue among what Ari Thór quests for himself even as his refrigerator quarters an Easter leg of roastable lamb with trimmings. Perhaps Ari Thór regards Kristín and Stefnir as not rating restaurant hamburgers and Coca-Cola that he relished with his parents or roastable leg of Easter lamb. He never seeks the bar beer that satisfies Thorleifur and perhaps pub-crawling Bjarki even as he perhaps seethes somewhat when Kristín selects sleeping alone over sharing red wine.

Bakery buns and hot chocolate in Winterkill, anglicized from Sigló, perhaps throng Eastertime tourists and townspeople to downtown Siglufjördur a tad like the 20th-century herring trade.

The financial collapse domestically and the job market Nordically account for Kristín's ("Christ-bearer") parents abandoned by long-time architectural-practice and banking positions and appearing among Norwegian jobholders. A master's program that asks of its candidates curriculum abroad adds Kristín to the Swedish workforce. Kristín affixes a chocolate Easter egg to a chandelier in Ari Thór's Eyrargata ("gravel-bank street") residence for their son Stefnir ("garland, wreath") to avail himself of Easter Sunday.
