Summary: Wagner's Lohengrin is the March 18, 2023, Saturday matinee broadcast, airing as 12th of the 2022-2023 season's 24 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
Wagner's Lohengrin is the March 18, 2023, Saturday matinee broadcast, airing at noon, 12:00 p.m., Eastern Time, as the 12th of the 2022-2023 Met Opera season's lineup of 24 Saturday matinee opera broadcasts.
Nineteenth-century German Romantic era composer and librettist Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813-Feb. 13, 1883) sourced his Romantic opera Lohengrin from a collection of epic poems by medieval German lyric and narrative poet Wolfram von Eschenbach (ca. 1170-ca. 1220), according to the opera's 2022-2023 season Program Note (page 38C) by Christopher Browner, Senior Editor for Marketing and Communications at the Metropolitan Opera. Wagner also consulted 12th- and 13th-century variations of the legend of the enigmatic Swan Knight, who travels in a swan-drawn boat.
The world premiere of Wagner's Lohengrin was held at Deutsche Nationaltheater und Staatskapelle Weimar (DNT) in Weimar, Thuringia state, Central Germany. Romantic era Hungarian composer, conductor, music transcriber and virtuoso pianist Franz Liszt (Oct. 22, 1811-July 31, 1886) conducted the medieval-themed opera's premiere, Wednesday, Aug. 28, 1850. Occurring on the 101st anniversary of the birth of German polymath Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (Aug. 28, 1749-March 22, 1832), Lohengrin's premiere participated in Weimar’s 1850 Goethe and Herder festival, according to religion and popular culture historian, weekly music columnist and writer Sophia L. (Lucia) Deboick in "A Year in Music: 1850 -- when national anthems came to the fore," posted June 15, 2019, to her weekly music column in The New European. The festival honored two of the city's famous transplant residents, Goethe and his friend, German philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder (Aug. 25, 1744-Dec. 18, 1803), who had settled permanently in Weimar in 1775 and 1776, respectively.
The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Lohengrin took place Wednesday, Nov. 7, 1883. Wagner's three-act romantic opera was offered as the seventh premiere in the opera company's first season lineup of 20 operas. Sung in Italian, Lohengrin received eight performances in the opera company's inaugural season, 1883-1884.

The American dramatic soprano made her Met Opera debut Monday, April 3, 1995, in the ensemble role of Woman with Baby in the opera company’s eighth performance of The Ghosts of Versailles by American classical composer John Corigliano (born Feb. 16, 1938).

The Russian bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, as Lieutenant Dolokhov in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of War and Peace by Soviet composer, conductor and pianist Sergei Prokofiev (April 23, 1891-March 5, 1953).
Evgeny Nikitin shares the role with Thomas Hall, who sings Telramund in the second and third (Thursday, March 2; Sunday, March 5) performances. The American dramatic baritone made his Met Opera debut Thursday, March 2, as Telramund.
Update: Thomas Hall adds a third appearance as Telramund. He replaces Evgeny Nikitin in the season's seventh Lohengrin performance, Tuesday, March 21, according to Met Opera's March 21 tweet.
Günther Groissböck appears in all 10 performances as King Heinrich (Henry the Fowler; German: Heinrich der Vogler or Heinrich der Finkler; Latin: Henricus Auceps; ca. 876-July 2, 936), who loses Lohengrin as defender because of Elsa's promise-breaking curiosity. The Austrian bass had made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2010, as Colline in the opera company’s 1,224th performance of Puccini's La Bohème.
