Þorleifur (Romanized Thorleifur) Ragnar Jónasson (Oct. 27, 1913-Oct. 6, 2003) brought together historic effects of erupting volcanic glaciers on Siglufjördur in his 1998 publication, Siglfirskur annáll. He called home Eiðsstaðir (Romanized Eidsstadir, “isthmus town”) in Blöndudalur (“mixed[-water] valley”), Austur-Húnavatnssýsla (“East-Bearcub water district”) County in current-day Iceland’s Norðurland vestra (Romanized Nordurland, “Northwestern Region”). Agriculture at Bændaskólinn á Hólar (“Hillock school”) in Skagafjörður (Romanized Skagafjördur, “peninsula fjord”) and dairy science at Ladelund Mejeriskole (“barn-grove dairy school”) in Denmark drew him.

Thorleifur exited Skagafjördur and Denmark with graduate degrees spring 1933, when a Danish dairy farm employed him until World War II (Sep. 1, 1939-Sep. 2, 1945).

Jónas Guðmundsson’s (Romanized Gudmundsson, Jan. 19, 1879-Sep. 25, 1933) and Ólöf Bjarnadóttir’s (Aug. 3, 1884-July 18, 1957) second-born child figured among Icelanders fleeing Anglo-German naval conflict.

Thorleifur got by ship, with fellow Icelanders, from Petsamo in northern Finland, through the Arctic Ocean, to the British naval base in Iceland by autumn 1940. He headed in spring 1941 to Siglufjördur, where he held one town position for four years in charge of a dairy shop and of milk sales. He initiated married life May 29, 1943, with carpenter Ólafur J. Reykdal’s (June 10, 1869-Dec. 20, 1960) and Sæunn Oddsdóttir’s (July 18, 1895-June 24, 1938) daughter.

Guðrún (Romanized Gudrún) Reykdal’s (Dec. 16, 1922-2005) and Thorleifur’s first-born, Ólafur Ragnarsson (born Sep. 8, 1944), joined them just before the latter’s second job in Siglufjördur.

Sveinn og Gísli (“free servant and pledge”) construction company kept Thorleifur as office manager for five years, until spring 1950, when town government kindled three-decades-long treasurership.

Thorleifur looked after the town treasury from spring 1950 even as he likewise logged frequent appointments as town mayor and the 13-year directorship of Siglufjördur Hospital. He concomitantly managed long-term reporting for the newspaper Vísi og Sjónvarpið (Romanized Sjónvarpid), before his retirement as town treasurer, in preparation for post-retirement research and writing. He netted the Siglufjördur Town Cultural Prize in 1997 for nestling into scholarly publishing niches, from which his publications numbered six books between 1990 and 1999.

Blackout, anglicized from Myrknætti, observes volcanic glaciers, whose historic effects on Siglufjördur Thorleifur Ragnar Jónasson offers in Siglfirskur annáll, 1998 publication by Vaka-Helgafell publishing of Reykjavík.

Thorleifur published Fjalllendi Eyjafjarðar að vestanverðu: frá Almenningsnöf að Öxnadalsheiði in 1990 and, with his wife, Úr sagnabrunni: þjóðsögur, sagnir og ævintýri Ásdísar Ólafsdóttur in 1991.

Siglfirskur annáll queues third in Thorleifur Ragnar Jónasson’s Úr Siglufjarðarbyggðum series quartet, after first Siglfirskar þjóðsögur og sagnir in 1996 and then Siglfirskir söguþættir in 1997. Margir eru visdóms vegir: skólastarf á Siglufirði I eitt hundrað ár 1883-1983 ranks, in 1999, as fourth book and only one through Siglufjördur’s Grunnskóli Siglufjarðar publishing. Family size swelled with Jónas Ragnarsson (born Feb. 24, 1948), whose own son Ragnar shaped his own writing career, and Edda Ragnarsdóttir (born Oct. 4, 1949).

Blackout, anglicized from Myrknætti, truthfully treats volcanic glaciers thanks to Thorleifur Ragnar Jónasson tackling their historic effects upon his town in his thorough tome, Siglfirskur annáll.

The volcanic glacier Katla ("cauldron") underneath Mýrdalsjökull ("crowd-valley glacier") in southern Iceland last acted up Oct. 12, 1918. It amassed 16 eruptions between 930 and 1918, according to contemporary recorded accounts.
