Shield volcanoes are to Hawaii, and to the Hawaiian archipelago’s kanaka maoli (“native Hawaiians”), what Shields Up are to NCIS: Hawai’i police procedural television series second-season episode 12 and episode 34 overall.

The third 2023-released episode, by writers Jan Nash and Amy Rutberg and by director Norman Buckley, in the 2022-2023 season, broaches the Hawaiian Islands’ unusual places. Native Hawaiians correlate unusual places connected to the phrase “Shields Up!” with their archipelago’s ground-lying, low-profile, warrior’s shield-like volcanoes; or with their Kanaka Maoli, shield-bearing flag. Hawaiian islands domicile shield volcanoes due to ocean island volcanism deriving from continental rift volcanism along two divergent-boundaried tectonic plates or from anomalously, mantle-fed hot spots.

The shield-like elaboration ensues from repeated eruptions of high-fluid, low-viscous lava that extends far as sticky, thin flows that end up enshrined as broad, lava sheets.

The Tamu Massif (from the initials of Texas A&M University, with which lead scientist William W. Sager affiliated as geology professor; and from French massif, "massive") acquits itself as 145,000,000-year-old member of the Emperor Seamounts Chain between the Hawaiian Ridge and the Russian Far East's Kamchatka Peninsula (from indigenous Koryak Konchachal, "men of the far end" via Russian Камча́тка). Fluid, low-silica lava flows up to the rocky surfaces of the Hawaiian archipelago, which features the great Gardner Pinnacles and the great Mauna Loa shield volcanoes.

Gardner Pinnacles, with the Hawaiian name Pūhāhonu (from Hawaiian pūhā, “to breathe at the surface” and honu, “turtle”), gets gauged as world-largest shield, world-largest single volcano. The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands house the 5.939-acre (24,030-square-meter) area holding Pūhāhonu shield volcano, 511 nautical miles (588 miles, 946 kilometers) northwest of Honolulu, Oahu County, Hawaii. The black-gray island of 35,986.91 cubic miles (150,000 cubic kilometers) of basalt rock includes a 170-foot- (52-meter-) high peak; and a 470,000-plus-acre (1,904-plus-square-kilometer, 735-plus-square-mile) surrounding reef.

Just one word unrelatedly joins shield volcanoes such as Mauna Loa and Pūhāhonu to the phrase Shields Up as title to NCIS: Hawai’i second-season episode 12.

Mauna Kea (White Mountain, from Hawaiian Mauna a Wākea, “sky father’s mountain”) allows panoramic views from Kamuela (from Hawaiian Samu'ela [perhaps from Hebrew שְׁמוּאֵל, "the one who listens" or from Hebrew שְׁמוּאֵל, "God is high"], "Samuel" via local Kamuela), also acknowledged as Waimea (from Hawaiian wai, "fresh water" and mea, "[filled with] reddish [soil]"). Pūhāhonu keeps perhaps, perhaps not, its title as world-largest volcano even after we better know Tamu Massif of Emperor Seamounts Chain between Hawaii and Kamchatka Peninsula.

Hawaii County lodges, as world-tallest shield volcano, 13,803- to 30,610-foot- (4,207.3- to 9,330-meter-) high Mauna Kea (White Mountain, from Hawaiian Mauna a Wākea, “sky father’s mountain”). Mauna Loa (from Hawaiian mauna, “mountain” and loa, “long, permanent”) shield volcano, 25-plus miles (40.23 kilometers) away, manifests as its highest a 125-foot (38-meter-) lower peak. The world-largest subaerial (from Latin sub, “under” and Greek ἀήρ, “air” via Greek ἀέριος and Latin āerius, “aerial, aloft”) shield volcano nets world-largest mass and volume.

The phrase Shields Up occurs as NCIS: Hawai’i second-season 12th-episode title concurrently with its observation over such non-explosively erupting shield volcanoes as Mauna Loa and Pūhāhonu.

Mauna Loa (from Hawaiian mauna, “mountain” and loa, “long, permanent”) amasses a 700,000-year-old age; a maximum 75-mile (120-meter) width; a 13,680-foot (4,170-meter) subaerial height; a 30,085-foot (9,170-meter) height, from base to summit; a 2,035-square-mile (5,271-square-kilometer) land area; an estimated 18,000-cubic-mile (75,000-cubic-kilometer) volume; ancient, 200,000-year-olds among 15,600 to 19,200 cubic miles (65,000 to 80,000 cubic kilometers of solid rock; extensive, 16,400-foot (5,000-meter) submarine flanks to the sea floor. "This Image of the Week shows the lava flows from Mauna Loa caught by one of the International Gemini Observatory’s Cloudcams, which operates 24/7 near the snow-covered summit of Maunakea (the highest point in the image). Mauna Loa, on the island of Hawaiʻi, began erupting on 27 November 2022, when lava emerged from fissures in Moku‘āweoweo, Mauna Loa's caldera at the summit. The reddish glow from theflows can be seen across the island. Mauna Loa is the world's largest active volcano and has not erupted in nearly 40 years. The image was taken in the early morning at 02:15 am local time on 29 November. This eruption is being watched closely by all inhabitants of the island of Hawaiʻi. Staff atGemini North, operated by NSF's NOIRLab, and the other Maunakea Observatories are monitoring with bated breath as the flows move down the flank of Mauna Loa towards the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road), which intersects with the Maunakea summit access road. On Mauna Loa itself, lava has crossed the access road, and cut off power, to NOAA's Mauna Loa Observatory. The eruption poses no threat to the Maunakea observatories and the flow remains far from any habitation at the moment. Also seen in the image is an exceptionally rare lava light pillar. More commonly seen as a sun pillar, thisatmospheric phenomenon has been seen associated with a volcano on rare occasion but requires an alignment of circumstance: obviously an erupting volcano (which provides the source of light near to the horizon), but also a high altitude cloud and freezing temperatures. These form a collection of millions of horizontally floating ice crystals to reflect the light towards the observer. Mauna Loa possesses gentle, shield volcano-like slopes that present a maximum steepness around 12 degrees and a volume estimated at 18,000 cubic miles (75,000 cubic kilometers).

Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park quarters the 2,035-square-mile (5,271-square-kilometer) expanse that qualifies as the land area of the dome-shaped, maximally 75-mile- (120-kilometer-) wide, solid-rock, submarine-flanked Mauna Loa. The 15,600 to 19,200 cubic miles (65,000 to 80,000 cubic kilometers) of solid rock that Mauna Loa retains represent more than half Hawaii County’s surface area. Mauna Loa and Pūhāhonu shield volcanoes shelter such mass that they each slump the earthly crust downward, by 5 miles (8 kilometers) in the former’s case.

Shield volcanoes such as Mauna Loa and Pūhāhonu threaten sentient existences with super-hot lava even as they traumatize less maliciously than Shields Up on NCIS: Hawai’i.
