The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service- (APHIS-) associated professional began her 45-minute-long broadcast, and 45-minute-long question-and-answer time, with the ALB 1- to 2-year life cycles. Eastern China and the Korean peninsula constitute the Coleoptera (hardened shield-like forewings, from Greek κολεός, “sheath” and πτερόν, “wing” via κολεόπτερος) beetle order member’s native countries. The Cerambycidae (from Greek κέρας, “horn” and -ειδής, “-like” via Latin -idæ) family member, described by Viktor Motschulsky (April 11, 1810-June 5, 1871), desires 12 genera.

Anoplophora glabripennis (from Greek ἄνοπλος, “shield-less” and φορά, “carrying”; Latin glaber, “smooth” and penna, “feather”) enjoys the maple genus, Acer (from Latin ācer, “sharp [spear-making wood]”).

The insect featured as starry sky beetle in Chinese to English translations favors birch, horse-chestnut, elm, willow, poplar, katsura, mimosa, mountain-ash, ash, golden rain and sycamore.

The Lamiinae (from Greek λαμυρός, “voracious” via Latin lamia and -inæ, “-ine”) flat-faced longhorn subfamily member goes for healthy, not damaged, declining, diseased, dying, stressed trees. ALB life cycles herald as first stage maximally 90 eggs housed, with each egg having its own niche, under host-tree bark until hatching two weeks later. The early-, the mid- and the late-stage larval, round-headed borer stages invade tree interiors by inhabiting the cambium, the phloem and the sapwood and issuing frass.

The one-year-long larval (from Latin lārva, “ghost”) stage kindles the pupal (from Latin pūpa, “doll, little girl, puppet”) stage and the 1-inch- (2.54-centimeter-) long adult stage.

The beetle stage leaves tree interiors by exit holes that look like, unlike the oviposition holes left 1 year, perhaps 2 years before, by egg-laying mothers. Mature stages mate from May through August in the same trees maintaining egg, larval and pupal manifestations and wood-munching marks on upper-trunk, and then main-trunk, branches. Egg-laying holes, exit holes, oozing foam and froth and sawdust-like frass along tree bases and around tree bases notify tree inspectors of ALB infestations and invasions.

Three to four years and 10 years respectively pass before infested, invaded host-trees present such signs as holes, frass, foam and froth and before they perish.

New York; Illinois; New Jersey; Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Massachusetts; Ohio; and South Carolina quartered first ALB infestations in 1996, 1998, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2014 and 2020. Massachusetts, Ohio, New York and South Carolina realized successful eradications even as Toronto returned to quarantine, inspection and removals with ALB recurrences despite eradication in 2013. The Plant Protection and Quarantine Program's (PPQ) herbicide schedules and imidacloprid systemic injections into host-tree trunks and tree-base soils stop removed-tree stumps from supporting any regrowth.
