Moshinsky's Staging of Verdi's Nabucco Had First Met Revival 2002-2003

Summary: Australian opera director Elijah Moshinsky's 2000-2001 staging of Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco had its first revival at Met Opera in the 2002-2003 season.

The first act of Verdi's Nabucco is set in the Temple of Solomon, also known as the First Temple (Hebrew: בֵּית-הַמִּקְדָּשׁ הָרִאשׁוֹן, Bēṯ hamMīqdāš hāRīʾšōn, "First House of the Sanctum"), which was destroyed ca. 587 BCE during the Siege of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar II, who reigned 605-562 BCE as King of the Neo-Babylonian Empire, also known as the Second Babylonian Empire or the Chaldean Empire; Tuesday, July 12, 2011, 09:36, image of model of modern reconstruction of Jerusalem during the 10th century BCE, from the City of David, Jerusalem Walls National Park, Old City of Jerusalem, East Jerusalem, Jerusalem District, central Israel: יוני שפירא, CC BY SA 4.0 International, via Wikimedia Commons

The Metropolitan Opera held the first revival of Australian opera director Elijah Moshinsky's 2000-2001 new staging of Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco in the 2002-2003 season, one season after its debut.
Elijah Moshinsky (Jan. 8, 1946-Jan. 14, 2021) had debuted his new staging of Nabucco by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901) on Thursday, March 8, 2001, as the opera company's 15th performance of the Old Testament-based Verdian opera. The Australian opera director had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 4, 1980, in the opera company's 153rd performance of Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera.
After one season's absence, the first revival of Moshinsky's production took place with six performances in the 2002-2003 season. The first through closing, sixth performances were given St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17, 2003; Saturday, March 22; Wednesday, April 2; Saturday, April 5; Tuesday, April 8; and Friday, April 11.
James Levine (June 23, 1943-March 9, 2021) reprised his conductorship for all six performances. The American conductor had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, June 5, 1971, in the opera company's 539th performance of Tosca by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924).
Frederick Burchinal made his first reprisal of the title role in the first revival's first two performances. The American operatic baritone had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, March 8, 2001, as an English Clerk in the Met Opera-hosted United States Premiere of Death in Venice by Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (Nov. 22, 1913-Dec. 4, 1976).
Frederick Burchinal shared the title role with Lado Ataneli (born 1963), who added the role of Nabucco to his Met Opera portfolio via appearances in the third through closing, sixth performances. The Republic of Georgia baritone had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003, as Germont in the opera company's 877th performance of Verdi's La Traviata.
Andrea Gruber (Andréa Erika Gruber) sang in the first revival's first three and fifth performances for her first reprisal of Abigaille, purportedly born a princess but actually slave-born. The American dramatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Saturday, April 21, 1990, as the Third Norn in the opera company's 208th performance of Götterdämmerung by 19th-century German composer and librettist Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813-Feb. 13, 1883).

Andrea Gruber sang Abigaille in the 2002-2003 season's first revival of Elijah Moshinsky's 2000-2001 production of Verdi's Nabucco and reprised the role in the second revival in the following season, 2003-2004; photo (left) by British photographer Joe Gaffney: Andréa Erika Gruber, via Facebook May 4, 2023

Andrea Gruber shared the role with Susan Neves, who sang Abigaille in the fourth and closing, sixth performances. The American dramatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Thursday, March 26, 1992, as the Overseer in the opera company's 68th performance of Elektra by German composer Richard Georg Strauss (June 11, 1864-Sept. 8, 1949).
Francisco Casanova appeared in the first revival's first five performances for his first reprisal of Ismaele, reciprocally loved by Princess Fenena and one-sidedly loved by Abigaille. The Dominican tenor had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, in the title role of Manrico in the opera company's 580th performance of Verdi's Il Trovatore.
Francisco Casanova shared the role with Jianyi Zhang (born 1954), who sang Ismaele in the first revival's closing, sixth performance. The Chinese-American tenor had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, April 12, 1997, in the title role in the opera company's 703rd performance of Faust by French composer Charles-François Gounod (June 17, 1818-Oct. 18, 1893).
Wendy White appeared in the first revival's first five performances for her first reprisal of Princess Fenena. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Oct. 16, 1989, as Flora in the opera company's 731st performance of Verdi's Traviata.
Wendy White shared the role with Elizabeth Bishop, who sang Princess Fenena in the first revival's closing, sixth performance. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, as a Venetian in the opera company's 10th performance of Death in Venice by Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (Nov. 22, 1913-Dec. 4, 1976).
Samuel Ramey appeared in the first revival's first five performances for his first reprisal of Zaccaria, High Priest of the Jews. The American operatic bass had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Jan. 19, 1984, as Argante in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Rinaldo by German-British baroque composer George Frideric Handel (Feb. 23, 1685-April 14, 1759).
Samuel Ramey shared the role with Paata Burchuladze (born Feb. 12, 1955), who sang Zaccaria in the first revival's closing, sixth performance. The Republic of Georgia operatic bass had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Sep. 25, 1989, as Ramfis in the opera company's 938th performance of Verdi's Aida.
Claudia Waite added the role of Anna, Zaccaria's sister, to her Met Opera portfolio with her appearances in all six of the first revival's performances. The American soprano had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Dec. 14, 1998, as the First Lady in the opera company's 326th performance of Die Zauberflöte by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791).
Vitalij Kowaljow sang the Babylonian High Priest of Bel (Ba'al) in all six of the first revival's performances. The Ukrainian bass made his Met Opera debut in the first revival's first performance, St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17.
Eduardo Valdes sang Babylonian soldier Abdallo in all six of the first revival's performances. The Puerto Rican tenor had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, as a Young Man in the opera company's 10th performance of Britten's Death in Venice.
The production team for Moshinsky's staging of Verdi's Nabucco comprised John Napier, set designer; Andreane Neofitou, costume designer; and Howard Harrison, lighting designer. English costume and set designer John Napier (born March 1, 1944) and Cyprus-born, London-raised costume designer Andreane Neofitou made their Met Opera debuts Thursday, March 8, 2001, in Moshinsky's new Nabucco production. British lighting designer Howard Harrison had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Jan. 11, 1996, in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of The Makropulos Case, composed by Czech composer Leoš Janáček (July 3, 1854-Aug. 12, 1928) and directed by Elijah Moshinsky.
The second revival of Moshinsky's staging of Verdi's Nabucco immediately succeeded the production's first revival. The second revival, which was held in the 2003-2004 season, offered 10 performances.

Wendy White added Verdi's Princess Fenena to her Met Opera portfolio in the 2000-2001 season's new production of Verdi's Nabucco by Australian opera director Elijah Moshinsky; the American soprano reprised the role in the three successive seasons of the production's first through third revivals (2002-2003 through 2004-2005): Jay Tolu Aftab, via Facebook Oct. 23, 2009
