Kaunaoa kahakai Hawaiian dodder avoids the survivor guilt on Magnum’s The Long Way Home crime action drama television series episode March 5, 2021, if seeds adopt hosts within 10 days of germinating.
Director Yangzom Brauen and writers Eric Guggenheim, Peter Lenkov and Katie Varney burrow into post traumatic stress disorder and survivor guilt of duty and returning servicepersons. Season Three’s 10th episode, series’ 50th episode overall, considers conduct and conversations culled from self-culpabilizing conceptions and critiques of civilian, collective, criminal, cultural, military, politico-economic catastrophes. The Convolvulaceae (from Latin convolvulus, “bindweed, caterpillar” and -āceae, “resembling”) bindweed and morning glory family member dwells endemically (exclusively, from Greek ἐν, “in” and δῆμος, “people”).
Ectoparasitic (from Greek ἐκτός, “outside” and παράσιτος, “eater at another’s table”), holoparasitic (from Greek ὅλος, “whole”; παρά “beside”; σῖτος, “food”) vines exist from cuttings and seeds.

Black or red-brown, hard-coated, round, smearable, 0.06-inch (1.59-millimeter) diameter seeds furnished in large quantities favor surface soils, where they feed upon five- to 10-day food reserves.
Germinated seeds grow temporary roots downward and thin stems outward, sideward, upward as chemosensory clues guide their low-chlorophyll, non-photosynthesizing seedlings toward chlorophyll-rich, green, photosynthesizing host plants. Cinder-, coral-, drought-, heat-, salt-, sand-, spray-, wind-tolerant seedlings no longer harbor below-ground roots once their above-ground haustoria (from Latin haustor, “drain, drink”) hold onto hosts. Insistent, root-like haustoria inserted into vascular systems impel energizing host nutrients inside intertwining, itinerating, lax, orange-yellow to yellow, sticky, thin stems with alternate-inclining, scale-like, simple leaves.
Kaunaoa kahakai Hawaiian dodder, judged taxonomically by Jacques Denys Choisy (April 5, 1799-Nov. 26, 1859), journeys through annual, year-long life cycles as small-flowered, sprawling woody plants.

Climbers known as Hawai’i or Hawaiian dodder commonly, kaunaoa kahakai (from Hawaiian kauna’oa, “dodder” and kahakai, “seashore”) locally, keep 0.12- to 0.26-inch (3- to 4-millimeter) flowers.
White- or yellow-flowered clusters lodge petal- and sepal-holding perianths (from Greek περί, “around” and ἄνθος, “flower”) and pistil-holding gynoeciums (from Greek γυνή, “woman” and οἶκος, “house”). The former, with funnel shapes and radial symmetry, maintains five petals, fused like its five fused sepals and like their five fused stamens without filamentous bases. The latter nestles into two niches fused pistils (from Latin pistillum, “pestle”), named carpels (from καρπός, “fruit, wrist”) and netting stalked styles, pollen-receiving stigmas, fruit-ripening ovaries.
Kaunaoa kahakai Hawaiian dodder, Cuscuta sandwichiana (from Arabic kuskut, “tangled hair," for John Montague [Nov. 13, 1718-April 30, 1792], 4th Earl of Sandwich) taxonomically, occurs white-fruited.

Midsummer months and early fall provoke not even 0.35-inch (9-millimeter) diameter fruits whose ovaries possess two-seeded cavities presented botanically as locules (from Latin loculus, “little place”).
Dodder flower and leaf buds respectively queue lei ā’ī (“neck”), lei haku (“braided-strand”) and lei o ka po’o (“head”) garlands and, when water-diluted, quicken placenta expulsions. The two-foot- (0.61-meter-) high shrub and the two-inch- (5.08-centimeter-) high, 10-plus-foot- (3.05-plus-meter-) wide vine requires coastal, dry-lowland, sunny, well-drained sands sea level to near-1,000-foot (304.8-meter) elevations. Fifty-inch (1,270-millimeter) annual rainfall sustains bayhops (pōhuehue, Ipomoea pes-caprae), ilima (Sida fallax), mulberry (noni, Morinda citrifolia), oval-leaf clustervine (pauohiiaka, Jacquemontia sandwicensis) and saltgrass (akiaki, Sporobolus virginianus).
Its truncated life cycle perhaps triggers no woody-styled survivor guilt in plant-throttling kauna’oa kahakai Hawaiian dodder since coastal and lowland birds and sands treasure dodder seeds.
