Summary: Algae, not Hawaiian pokeberry, afflicts Spill the Tea, season 3 episode 9 rerun Monday July 1, 2024, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i.
"God talks to human beings through many vectors: through each other, through organized religion, through the great books of those religions, through wise people, through art and music and literature and poetry, but nowhere with such detail and grace and color and joy as through creation. When we destroy a species, when we destroy a special place, we're diminishing our capacity to sense the divine, understand who God is and what our own potential is." Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., April 19, 2023, Boston Park Plaza Hotel, Back Bay, Boston, Massachusetts.
“And there’s many people out there who want us to move to the next planet already and I’m like, hang on, let’s not give up on this planet yet," William, Prince of Wales, July 31, 2023, Sorted Food food truck, London, England, United Kingdom.
Hawaiian pokeberry, acknowledged taxonomically by Stephan Friedrich Ladislaus Endlicher (June 24, 1804-March 28, 1849), abides endemically in Hawaii state on Hawaii (from Hawaiian ha wai ‘i, “breath life-force supreme”), Kauai (from Hawaiian kaua’i, “to place to dry”?), Maui (from Hawaiian maui, “broken- or fractured-limb pain, pit-ripened banana, sweet potato, to moisten or wet”?), Molokai (from Hawaiian moloka’i, “sweet potato”) and Oahu (from Hawaiian o’ahu, “gathering place”) islands; Monday, March 7, 2011, 15:38, image of Phytolacca sandwicensis: David Eickhoff from Pearl City, Hawaii, USA, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons |
Hawaiian algae, not Hawaiian pokeberry, afflicts Spill the Tea, season 3 episode 9 debuted Monday, April 22, 2024, and rerun Monday July 1, 2024, on American police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i.
Episode 53 overall, by director LeVar Burton and writers Ron McGee and Megan Bacharach, broaches NCIS ELITE secret compound chemist being brutalized by an unusual poison. Compromised white-blood cells and immune system casualtize Alexi Volkoff (David Meunier), years-long concentrating on biological toxins, week-long consuming copious Spirulina blue-green algae (Arthrospira platensis) health-food supplements. Other denizens of the Hawaiian islands perhaps likelier die from the alkaloid phytolaccine and the triterpene toxins that fresh, raw, undercooked Hawaiian pokeberry deathly domiciles plant-wide.
Hawaiian pokeberry, coral berry commonly and pōpolo kū mai locally, enchants its enthusists as exquisite-flowering and fruiting endemic (from Greek ἐν δῆμος, “in [one’s own] people”).
Tracheophyte (from Greek τραχεῖα ἀρτηρία φυτά, “windpipe plant”) cladeship furnishes its vascular-plants member, Hawaiian pokeberry, mineral-favorable, water-friendly, rigid, rot-resistant and non-rigid, non-rot-resistant, photosynthetic starches-favorable, sugars-friendly tissues.
Angiosperm cladeship gives flowering-plants members flowers; fruits-guarded seeds with nutritious, three-chromosome endosperm (from Greek ἀγγεῖον σπέρμα, “container[ized] seed”; ἔνδον- σπέρμα, “in seed”); and water-circulating vessel elements. Eudicots (true two seed leaves, from Greek ἐΰ- δῐ- κοτῠληδών, “good twice cup-shaped cavity”) cladeship has such members as Hawaiian pokeberry germinated with two seed leaves. Caryophyllales (from Greek καρυόφυλλον via κάρυον φύλλον, “nut leaf”; Latin -ālis, “pertaining to”) ordership includes in its carnation and pink membership Hawaiian pokeberry (from Powhatan pocan).
Modern Hawaiians perhaps judge Hawaiian pokeberry as just jeopardizing health with misuse on the order of Hawaiian Spirulina algae in Spill the Tea on NCIS: Hawai’i.
The Phytolaccaceae (from Greek φῠτόν, “plant”; Italian lacca, “red[-dye]”; Latin -āceae, “-resembling”) family kindles in its pokeweed members straight stems for alternate, entire, simple, spiral leaves.
The pokeweed family lodges on its members radially symmetrical petals; persistent tepals (non-reproductive outer-whorl flower part, from Latin petalum sepalum, “petal sepal”); and fleshy, small fruits. The Phytolacca (from Greek φῠτόν, “plant”; Italian lacca, “red[-dye]”) genus manifests among its members, such as Hawaiian pokeberry, long stem-ending racemes (from Latin racēmus, “bunch, cluster"). Phytolacca racemes niche flowers that, with their pollination, nurture globe-like berries into which nestle small seeds with hard outer shells that intactly navigate bird digestive systems.
Phytolaccatoxin and phytolaccigenin toxins always occupy the entire Hawaiian pokeberry even as their equivalents never occupy Hawaiian Spirulina algae in Spill the Tea on NCIS: Hawai’i.
Proper food-processing prevents sandwicensis (Phytolacca sandwicensis, from Greek φῠτόν, “plant”; Italian lacca, “crimson[-lacquer dye]”; Old English sand wīċ, “sand settlement”; Latin -ēnsis, “of/from”) species-poisoned human palates.
Hawaiian pokeberry quests maximum 1- to 3-plus-foot (0.3048- to 0.9144-meter) heights and 10-plus-foot (3.048-plus-meter) diameters at creek-bottomed, open-countried, wet-forested 150- to 6,500-foot (45.72- to 1,981.2-meter) elevations. A five-plus-year life cycle rewards, with racemes resplendent with pink, rose, white flowers and black-purple fruits, those who regard them as accent, container and ground-cover plants. Sap-sipping aphids, mealybugs and scale stress, even as cinder, organic, well-drained soils; partial sun; and 50- to 100-inch (1,270- to 2,540-millimeter) annual rainfall sustain, Hawaiian pokeberry.
Hawaiian Spirulina algae, outside Spill the Tea on NCIS: Hawai’i, terminates its tasters far less than fresh, raw, undercooked Hawaiian pokeberry fuzzy-green leaves and red stems.

Dana, James D. (Dwight). 1848. "2. Corallium Secundum. (Dana.)." In: Zoophytes. United States Exploring Expedition During the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842 Under the Command of Charles Wilkes, U.S.N. Philadelphia [Pa}: Lea and Blanchard 7: 641. "C. ramulosum, in plano expansum, polypis secundum, ad apice ramiculorum dispositis et sape binis; axe calcareo, levi, pallidè carneo aut albo, crustáque coccineá.
"Ramulose, branching in a plane; polyps confined to one surface, mostly placed at the apex of very small branchlets and often in twos: axis calcareous, smooth, pale flesh-red or white, crust scarlet.
"Plate 60, fig. 1, zoophyte, natural size.
"This species is peculiar in having the branches arranged in a single plane, and the polyps confined to one surface. They open mostly at the extremities of slender calcareous processes. The only specimen seen by the author, was procured at the Sandwich Islands; but it may have been brought by shipping from some other locality. It is five inches high and eight broad, with the stem at base half an inch thick. The crust still remains dried on the axis and the right rays of the closed polyps may be easily distinguished."
