Moshinsky's Staging of Verdi's Nabucco Had Fifth Met Revival 2016-2017

Summary: Australian opera director Elijah Moshinsky's 2000-2001 staging of Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco had its fifth revival at Met Opera in the 2016-2017 season.

Eduardo Valdes added Babylonian soldier Abdallo to his Met Opera portfolio during the 2002-2003 season in the first revival of Elijah Moshinsky's staging of Verdi's Nabucco; the Puerto Rican tenor made four reprisals of Abdallo, with appearances in the second through fifth revivals, held, respectively, in seasons 2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2011-2012 and 2016-2017: Eduardo Valdes, via Facebook Jan. 7, 2017

The Metropolitan Opera's staging of the fifth revival of Australian opera director Elijah Moshinsky's 2000-2001 new staging of Giuseppe Verdi's Nabucco in the 2016-2017 season ended the absence in seasons 2012-2013 through 2015-2016 that had followed the fourth revival's occurrence in the 2011-2012 season.
Elijah Moshinsky (Jan. 8, 1946-Jan. 14, 2021) debuted his new staging of Nabucco by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901) on Thursday, March 8, 2001, at Met Opera. The 2000-2001 season offered nine performances of Moshinsky's new production. The Australian opera director had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 4, 1980, in the opera company's 153rd performance of Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera.
The production's debut and its first revival were separated by one season, 2001-2002. The first revival opened St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17, 2003, as the first of six revival performances.
The next seasons featured the production's second and third revivals. In the 2003-2004 season, the second revival opened Monday, April 5, 2004, for a run of 10 revival performances.
The third revival immediately succeeded the second revival. The 2004-2005 season's third revival of Moshinsky's production opened Monday, April 5, 2004, and tallied 10 revival performances.
Six seasons, from 2005-2006 through 2010-2011, passed between the third and fourth revivals. The fourth revival, which opened Tuesday, Sep. 27, 2011, comprised 12 revival performances in the 2011-2012 season.
A skip of four seasons, from 2012-2013 through 2015-2016, followed the fourth revival. Moshinsky's production of Verdi's Nabucco returned in the 2016-2017 season for its fifth revival. Opening Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, the fifth revival received eight performances. The second through closing, eighth performances were offered Friday, Dec. 16; Monday, Dec. 19; Thursday, Dec. 22; Tuesday, Dec. 27; Friday, Dec. 30; Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017; and Saturday, Jan. 7.
James Levine (June 23, 1943-March 9, 2021) conducted all eight of the fifth revival's performances for his third reprisal of the conductorship of the Moshinsky-staged Verdi opera. The American conductor had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, June 5, 1971, in the opera company's 539th performance of Tosca by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924).
Plácido Domingo (born Jan. 21, 1941) sang the title role in the fifth revival's first four and last two performances. The Spanish tenor had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, Sep. 28, 1968, as Maurizio in the opera house's 16th performance of Adriana Lecouvreur by Italian composer Francesco Cilea (July 23, 1866-Nov. 20, 1950).
Plácido Domingo shared the role with Zeljko Lucic (Željko Lučić; born Feb. 24, 1968) sang King Nabucco in the fifth revival's fifth and sixth performances for his first reprisal of the role. The Serbian operatic baritone had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Sep. 26, 2006, as Barnaba in the opera company’s 275th performance of La Gioconda by 19th-century Italian opera composer Amilcare Ponchielli (Aug. 31, 1834-Jan. 16, 1886).
Liudmyla Monastyrska (born May 25, 1975) appeared in the fifth revival's first four and last three performances as Abigaille, a princess who discovers that she is not a princess, loser in the love triangle with King Nabucco's true daughter, Princess Fenena, and Ismaele, nephew of the King of Jerusalem, and self-poisoner who repents her vendetta against Fenena. The Ukrainian spinto soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, in the title role in the opera company's 1,123rd performance of Verdi's Aida.
Liudmyla Monastyrska shared the role with Tatiana Melnychenko, who sang Abigaille in the fifth revival's fifth performance. The Ukrainian soprano's performance Tuesday, Dec. 27, as Abigaille marked her Met Opera debut.
Russell Thomas appeared in the fifth revival's first four and last three performances as Ismaele, nephew of the King of Jerusalem, whose love triangle with supposed sororal princesses Abigaille, unloved by him, and Fenena, loved reciprocally by him, sparks loser-in-love Abigaille's vendetta against Fenena. The American tenor had made his Met Opera debut as the Herald in the opera company's 178th performance of Verdi's Don Carlo.
Russell Thomas shared the role with Adam Diegel, who sang Ismaele in the fifth revival's fifth performance. The Korean-American tenor had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Sep. 27, 2010, as Froh in the opera company's 156th performance of Das Rheingold by 19th-century German composer and librettist Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813-Feb. 13, 1883).
Jamie Barton (born Oct. 17, 1981) appeared in the fifth revival's first four and last three performances as Princess Fenena, targeted for Ismaele's reciprocal love by her supposed sister, Abigaille, who ultimately transforms from avenging loser to self-poisoned repenter. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, Sep. 23, 2009, as the second of three ladies in the opera company’s 393rd performance of Die Zauberflöte by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791).
Jamie Barton shared the role with Nancy Fabiola Herrera (born Oct. 2, 1968), who sang Fenena in the fifth revival's fifth performance. The Venezuelan-born Canarian mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, as Suzuki in the opera company's 795th performance of Puccini's Madama Butterfly.
Dmitry Belosselskiy (born 1975) sang Zaccaria, High Priest of the Jews, as his first reprisal of the role. The Ukrainian bass made his Met Opera debut Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, in the fourth revival's ninth performance.
Danielle Talamantes sang Anna, Zaccaria's sister. The American soprano had made her Met Opera debut Nov. 7, 2013, in the opera company's 60th performance of Die Frau ohne Schatten by German late Romantic and early modern composer Richard Strauss (June 11, 1864-Sep. 8, 1949).
Sava Vemic (Sava Vemić; born 1987) appeared as the Babylonian High Priest of Bel (Ba'al). The Serbian bass made his Met Opera debut Monday, Dec. 12, 2016, in the fifth revival's first performance, which numbered as the opera company's 58th performance of Nabucco.
Eduardo Valdes sang Babylonian soldier Abdallo as his fourth reprisal of the role. The Puerto Rican tenor had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Feb. 7, 1994, as a Young Man in the opera company's 10th performance of Britten's Death in Venice.
The production team for Moshinsky's staging of Verdi's Nabucco comprised John Napier, set designer; Andreane Neofitou, costume designer; and Howard Harrison, lighting designer. The Thursday, March 8, 2001, debut of Moshinsky's new Nabucco production also had marked the Met Opera debuts of English costume and set designer John Napier (born March 1, 1944) and Cyprus-born, London-raised costume designer Andreane Neofitou. British lighting designer Howard Harrison had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Jan. 11, 1996, in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of The Makropulos Case, composed by Czech composer Leoš Janáček (July 3, 1854-Aug. 12, 1928) and directed by Elijah Moshinsky.
J. Knighten Smit was the fifth revival's stage director. The American Met Opera revival director first had been credited as a stage Monday, March 17, 2003, for the first revival of Moshinsky's staging of Verdi's Nabucco.
After its fifth revival, Moshinsky's production skipped seasons 2017-2018 through 2022-2023.
The sixth revival of the Moshinsky-staged Verdian opera occurs in the 2023-2024 season. The sixth revival opened Thursday, Sep. 28, as the first of 14 performances. Closing night is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26, 2024, at 8:00 p.m.
