2019-2020 Met Opera Season’s Fifth Week Has Gluck, Massenet and Puccini

The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s fifth week has Gluck, Massenet and Puccini operas in season premieres of Orfeo ed Euridice and La Bohème and continuing performances of Manon and Turandot.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s fifth week opens with the season’s third Sunday matinee. The Sunday, Oct. 20, performance of Orfeo ed Euridice by German Classical Era composer Christoph Gluck (July 2, 1714-Nov. 15, 1787) marks the Greek myth-themed opera’s season premiere.
The fifth week includes a second performance of Orfeo ed Euridice. The second performance takes place Thursday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time.
Beyond the fifth week’s two performances, Orfeo ed Euridice receives five additional performances in the 2019-2020 Met Opera season. Including the first two performances, three performances are offered in October. The month’s third performances takes place Tuesday, Oct. 29, at 8 p.m.
Four performances are scheduled for November. The month’s performances take place Friday, Nov. 1, at 8 p.m. EDT; Monday, Nov. 4, at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time; Thursday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 10, at 3 p.m.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s performances of Orfeo ed Euridice revive staging by Mark Morris. The American dancer, choreographer and director’s staging debuted May 2, 2007, as a new Met Opera production in the opera house’s 83rd performance of Orfeo ed Euridice.
Mark Morris is credited as the production’s director and choreographer. His production team comprises Allen Moyer, set designer; Isaac Mizrahi, costume designer; James F. Ingalls, lighting designer.
The Metropolitan Opera has staged two revivals since the debut season of Mark Morris’ production. The most recent revival was launched during the 2010-2011 Met Opera season. The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s performances of Orfeo ed Euridice qualify as the opera house’s third revival of Morris’ production.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s fifth week offers two performances of Manon by French Romantic Era composer Jules Massenet (May 12, 1842-Aug. 13, 1912). The week’s first performance takes place Tuesday, Oct. 22, at 7:30 p.m. The week’s second performance is slated for Saturday, Oct. 26, at 1 p.m.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s fifth week stages two performances of Turandot by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). The week’s first performance is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The week’s second performance takes place Saturday, Oct. 26, at 8:30 p.m.
Puccini’s La Bohème makes its 2019-2020 Met Opera season premiere in the season’s fifth week. La Bohème’s opening night happens Friday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m.
Including the opening night performance, the 2019-2020 Met Opera season offers 16 performances of La Bohème. Including the opening night performance, eight performances are scheduled for autumn 2019.
Beyond opening night, October hosts a second performance. The month’s second performance takes place Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m.
The remaining six autumn performances are scheduled for November. The month’s performances take place Saturday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. EDT; Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 Eastern Standard Time; Saturday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Nov. 17, at 3 p.m.; Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m.
Five performances are scheduled for winter 2020. All five performances are offered in January. The month’s performances take place Thursday, Jan. 9, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Jan. 12, at 3 p.m.; Friday, Jan. 17, at 7:30 p.m.; Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 25, at 8 p.m.
Three performances are scheduled for spring 2020. One performance will be offered in April. The month’s performance takes place Wednesday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. May hosts two performances. The month’s performances take place Saturday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m., and Thursday, May 7, at 8 p.m.
The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s performances of La Bohème revives staging directed by Franco Zeffirelli. The Italian film, opera and television director’s staging debuted Dec. 14, 1981, as a new Met Opera production in the opera house’s 823rd performance of La Bohème.
Franco Zeffirelli is credited as the production’s director and set designer. His production team comprises Peter J. Hall, costume designer, and Gil Wechsler, lighting designer.
The Metropolitan Opera has launched 34 revivals since the 1981-1982 season’s debut of Zeffirelli’s production. Met Opera’s most recent revival occurred during the 2018-2019 season. The 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s performances of La Bohème mark the opera house’s 35th revival of Zeffirelli’s production.
The takeaways for the 2019-2020 Met Opera season’s fifth week are that Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice has its season’s premiere as the week’s Sunday matinee and that the fifth week includes the 35th revival of Franco Zeffirelli’s staging of Puccini’s La Bohème as well as continuing performances of Massenet’s Manon and Puccini’s Turandot.
