‘Imiloa December 2024 Sky Watch accommodates four moon phases even as it acknowledges the hibernal, northern, winter solstice of the shortest day and of the longest night in one consecutively 24-hour stretch.

University of Hawaii, Hilo, Hawaii County (from Hawaiian ‘imi loa, “to search far”; ha wai ‘i, “breath life-force supreme”; hilo, “thread”) boasts sky-watching ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center. ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center calls the English-language month December the Hawaiianized month Kekemapa even as other culture conveyors such as the Prince Kūhiō Civic Club considers otherwise. Polynesian-ancestored Hawaiian culture anciently domiciled, traditionally domicile island-developed, island-diversified calendar-month names even as Kapiolani Community College of Honolulu, Honolulu County, Oahu island divulges two same-month names.

Honolulu area’s Kapiolani college (from Hawaiian hono lulu, “bay sheltered”; kapi’o lani, “arched heaven [= rainbow]”) expresses December as November-December’s one-month Makalu and December-January’s one-month Kaelo.

Kapiolani college’s Prince Kūhiō Civic Club calendar (for Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole [Mar 26, 1871-Jan 7, 1922]), figures Makalu and Kaelo (from Hawaiian ka, “of”; elo, “wet”).

The cool, hooilo (from Hawaiian ho’oilo, “to cause to germinate, to sprout”), rainy, wet-season, wintry grouping from last-half October through first-half April guards November-December and December-January. Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, through Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, have mahina hou (from Hawaiian mahina hou, “month fresh/new/recent”) the first new-moon phase of two such phases. Full-moon Sunday the 15th, full-moon Monday the 16th, full-moon Sunday the 22nd, last-quarter Thursday the 26th, last-quarter Friday the 27th know sunny days, perhaps clear-skied nights.

Sunday the 8th through Saturday the 14th lodge as mahina hapalua mua (from Hawaiian mahina hapa lua mua, “moon half double first”) the first-quarter moon phase. Cloudy-, sunny-skied Sunday the 8th through Wednesday the 11th, Saturday the 14th and cloudy-, rainy-, sunny-skied Thursday the 12th, Friday the 13th perhaps manifest clear-cloudy nights. Sunday the 15th through Sunday the 22nd niche as mahina o hoku, mahina piha, mahina poepoe (“moon of star”; “moon full”; “moon round”) the full moon.

‘Imiloa December 2024 Sky Watch offers before two full-moon nights the sunny second, the sunny third of six sunny days for, apart first-quarter, four moon phases.

Cloudy-rainy-sunny days Tuesday the 17th, Thursday the 19th and cloudy-sunny days Wednesday the 18th, Friday the 20th, Saturday the 21st perhaps predict nights partially, permanently overcast.

Monday the 23rd through Sunday the 29th quarter as mahina hapalua hope (from Hawaiian mahina hapa lua hope, “moon half double last”) the last-quarter moon phase. Cloudy-rainy-sunny days Monday the 23rd and Tuesday the 24th and cloudy-rainy days Wednesday the 25th, Saturday the 28th, Sunday the 29th perhaps realize clear-overcast, overcast-only nights.
