Wana Hawaiian Long-Spined Urchins Are Changing Tides on NCIS: Hawai’i

Summary: Wana Hawaiian long-spined urchins are Changing Tides, season 2 episode 6 Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i.

Black-spined Hawaiian sea urchins, long-spined uchins commonly and wana and wana halula locally and Diadema paucispinum scientifically, abide in the Hawaiian archipelago. Research accessible online since May 1, 2001, accounts for Easter Island, Okinawa and Pitcairn populations within that first lineage, that first mitochondrial clade. It adds a second lineage, a second mitochondrial clade from East Africa and Arabia eastward through the Philippines and New Guinea; July 24, 2004 image of Diadema paucispinum, Sharm el-Sheikh, southern Sinai Peninsula, Egypt: Fernando Herranz Martín, GNU GPLv3 (General Public License version 3), via Wikimedia Commons

Wana Hawaiian long-spined urchins who ate adequate amounts of seafloor algae, for coral-reef amplification, are Changing Tides, season 2 episode 8 Monday, Oct. 24, 2022, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i.
Tidal pool-borne Marine Corporal Jasper Kanahele (Alexander Grace) bothers NCIS Special Agents in 28th NCIS: Hawai’i episode overall, by director Lionel Coleman and writer Noah Evslin. Gabby (Nicole Rombaoa) and Jasper commence their outing with a comparison of big, black, long-spined, touch-unfriendly sea urchins and of flat-spined, little, purple, touch-friendly sea urchins. East Pacific islands, the Hawaiian archipelago and the western Indo-Pacific Ocean domiciles big, black-bodied, black- and long-spined sea urchins designated as wana and as wana halula.
Wana, wana halula and wana hawa’e maoli (from Hawaiian wana, “sharp-pointed”; wana hālula, “sharp-pointed the calm”; wana hāwa’e maoli, “sharp-pointed [spikelet-less] sea-urchin natural”) elucidate three species.

Hawaiian black-spined sea urchins, Hawaiian black-spined urchins, Hawaiian long-spined sea urchins, Hawaiian long-spined urchins, Diadema paucispinum ("headband few-spined"), wana ("sharp-pointed") and wana halula ("sharp-pointed the calm") admit to appelations for one genus and species. Five blue, narrow lines; an orange ring; and a projection iconically adorn the excrementary opening of black-spined, long-spined sea urchins; July 24, 2004 image of Diadema paucispinum, Sharm el-Sheikh, southern Sinai Peninsula, Egypt: Fernando Herranz Martín, GNU GPLv3 (General Public License version 3), via Wikimedia Commons

Wana favors banded, blue-black and long-spined urchins even as wana halula and wana hawa’e maoli respectively feature long-spined (Diadema paucispinum) and blue-black (Echinothrix diadema) sea urchins.
Kalaupapa National Historical Park of Kalawao County, on Molokai island (from Hawaiian kalua papa, “plain flat”; kala wao, “announce mountain-area”; moloka’i, “ocean waters-gathering”), guards all three. It hails banded, blue-black and long-spined urchins as housed within the park even as it honors the native species as respectively common, uncommon and uncommon habitants. Marine-life photographers Keoki and Yuko Stender identify 8- to 10-, 60-, 75-, 85-foot (2.44-, 3.05-, 18.29-, 22.86-, 25.91-meter Hawaii, Maui, Molokini, Oahu depths as long-spined urchin-friendly.
Wana Hawaiian long-spined urchins journey to Changing Tides in NCIS: Hawai’i tidal pools and to shaded, well-circulating depths of ocean-reef flats, protected reefs and shallow-sloped reefs.

The Hawaiian appellation wana additionally affirms Hawaiian banded sea urchins and double-spined urchins. Echinothrix calamaris (from Greek ἐχῖνος, "hedgehod, sea urchin" and θρῐ́ξ, "hair"; and κάλαμος, "hair") affix primary and secondary spines by muscle and skin tissue to calcite limestone skeletons. They nevertheless air banded areas that iconically ally with them alone of the three species; April 2005 image of banded sea urchin (Echinothrix calamaris): Brocken Inaglory, CC BY SA 3.0 Unported, via Wikimedia Commons

Wana halula Hawaiian long-spined sea urchins keep sometimes to shallow water and usually to protected vertical surfaces in 60-, 60-plus-foot- (18.29-, 18.29-plus-meter-) deep South Pacific waters.
The State of Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Aquatic Resources lists “shallow habitat below 15 ft. [4.57-meter]” (2021:33) lodging only blue-black urchins. Hawaii Code of Rules 13-37-3 mentions among “permittable activities” hand tool-massing blue-black, helmet (ha’uke’uke, Colobocentrotus atratus) and long-spined urchins unless moratoriumed June 1-Oct. 1 harvest months. The fishing industry and triggerfishes (black, bridled, finescale, gilded, lagoon, pinktail, scythe, wedgetail and perhaps even reef) number among wana halula Hawaiian long-spined sea urchin predators.
Wana Hawaiian long-spined urchins offer calcite limestone skeleton-attached, movable, 3- to 12-inch- (7.62- to 30.48-centimeter-) long spines to human opponents on Changing Tides on NCIS: Hawai’i.

The Hawaiian appellations wana ("sharp-pointed") and wana hāwa’e maoli, “sharp-pointed [spikelet-less] sea-urchin natural") apply to blue-black and diadema urchins. The Echinothrix diadema (from Greek ἐχῖνος, "hedgehod, sea urchin" and θρῐ́ξ, "hair"; and διάδημα, "crown, headband") assembles blue-sheened black spines; Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016 03:12 PM PST image of blue-black urchin (Echinothrix diadema), Puako, northwestern Hawai'i County (Big Island): Jonathan Eisen, CC BY 4.0 International, via Wikimedia Commons

Light-sensitive nerves in skeleton-poised skin prompt black-spined wana halula, with spines also muscle tissue-positioned onto skeletons, toward precisely piercing predators with their petiter, poison-possessing, secondary spines.
Five-tooth jaws qualify the Echinodermata phylum, Echinoidea class, Diadematoida order (from Greek ἐχῖνος δέρμα, “sea-urchin skin”; Latin –oida/oidea/oideus, “resembling”; Greek δῐᾰ́δημᾰ, “headband”) member as filamentous algae-grazer. Each maximally 6-inch (15.24-centimeter) diameter, 10-inch- (25.4-centimeter-) long Diadematidae (from Greek δῐᾰ́δημᾰ, “headband”; -εἶδος, “resemblance” via Latin -idæ) realizes a 5 narrow-blue-lined, orange-ringed, projecting excremental opening. Two mitochondrial-claded Diadema paucispinum (from Latin pauca spīna, “few spines”), scientized by Alexander Agassiz (Dec. 17, 1835-March 27, 1910), settles into calcareous rock-shelf crevices and hollows.
NCIS: Hawai’i Changing Tides tempt wana Hawaiian long-spined urchins triggering Easter Island, Okinawa, Pitcairn lineage even as East Africa, Arabia, Philippines, New Guinea tempt the other.

NCIS investigation of Marine Corporal Jasper Kanahele's (Alexander Grace) mysterious fentanyl overdose in a tide pool leads Special Agent Kai Holman (Alex Tarrant) to a dead pilot in a downed plane on the Pacific Ocean floor two miles from shore in "Changing Tides," season 2 episode 8 of American police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai'i: Alex Tarrant @AlexTarrant2, via Twitter Oct. 24, 2022
