Summary: The Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, partial solar eclipse belongs to Saros series 124, a family of 73 similar solar eclipses.
The Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, partial solar eclipse belongs to Saros series 124, which comprises 73 similar solar eclipses.
The solar Saros cycle groups solar eclipses with similar geometries into families, known as series. All solar eclipses in the same Saros series have the shared geometry of occurrence at the same lunar node. The two lunar nodes, designated as ascending and descending, mark the two intersections of the moon's orbit with Earth's orbit. The ascending node indicates lunar passage to the north of Earth's orbit. The descending node signals passage to the south of Earth's orbit.
Saros 124 solar eclipses exhibit geometric occurrence at the moon's descending node. The moon moves northward with each Saros 124 solar eclipse.
A Saros cycle equates to approximately 6,585.3 days (18 years 11 days 8 hours). Specifically, Saros series 124 lasts for 1,298.17 years, according to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Eclipse Web Site's eclipse predictions by NASA astrophysicist, now emeritus, Fred Espenak. Saros series 124 spans 13 centuries, from the 11th to the 24th centuries.
Saros series 124 contains 29 partial solar eclipses, 43 total solar eclipses and one hybrid solar eclipse. Saros series 124 offers no annular solar eclipses.
The cycle's 73 eclipses distribute across four sets. The first set contains nine partial solar eclipses. The second set comprises 43 total solar eclipses. The third set features the cycle's only hybrid solar eclipses. The fourth of the cycle's four sets contains the last 20 of the cycle's 29 partial solar eclipses.
Saros series 124 opened with a partial solar eclipse on March 6, 1049. The series closes with its 73rd member, a partial solar eclipse on Sunday, May 11, 2347. Indicative of Saros 124 cycle's characteristic northward movement from the descending node, the opening solar eclipse associated with the Northern Hemisphere while the closing solar eclipse took place in the Southern Hemisphere.
Saros series 124's first set of partial solar eclipses closed with the partial solar eclipse of June 1, 1193. The June 1193 partial solar eclipse occurred as the ninth of the 73-member lineup in Saros series 124. The June 1193 partial solar eclipse numbered as the ninth and last partial solar eclipse of the first set of partial solar eclipses in Saros series 124 and as the ninth of the 29 partial solar eclipses (first set's nine; second set's 20) in Saros series 124.
The Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, partial solar eclipse takes place in Saros 124 cycle's second set of partial solar eclipses. The second partial solar eclipse set sequences as the cycle's fourth and last set. The Saros 124 cycle's second set of partial solar eclipses spans three centuries, from 21st to the 24th centuries.
The second partial solar eclipse set opens with the partial solar eclipse of Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004. The October 2004 partial solar eclipse occurred as the 54th of the 73-member lineup of Saros series 124. The second set's first partial solar eclipse numbered as the first of the set's 20 partial solar eclipses and as the 10th of the 29 partial solar eclipses in Saros series 124.
The second partial solar eclipse set closes with the partial solar eclipse of Sunday, May 11, 2347. The May 2347 partial solar eclipse occurs as the 73rd and last eclipse in the 73-member Saros series 124. The cycle's last eclipse numbers as the second partial solar eclipse set's 20th and last partial solar eclipse and as the 29th and last partial solar eclipse in Saros series 124.
The Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, partial solar eclipse numbers as the second of the second partial solar eclipse set's 20 partial solar eclipses and as the 11th of the 29 partial solar eclipses in Saros series 124. The October 2022 partial solar eclipse occurs as the 55th in the 73-member lineup of Saros series 124.
The predecessor of the October 2022 partial solar eclipse in Saros series 124 was the second partial solar eclipse set's opener, the partial solar eclipse of Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004. The second partial solar eclipse set's opener succeeded the Friday, Oct. 3, 1986, eclipse, which occurred as the only hybrid solar eclipse in Saros series 124.
The successor of the October 2022 partial solar eclipse in Saros series 124 will be the partial solar eclipse of Sunday, Nov. 4, 2040. The November 2040 partial solar eclipse numbers as the third of the second partial solar eclipse set's 20 partial solar eclipses and as the 12th of the 29 partial solar eclipses in Saros series 124. The October 2022 partial solar eclipse occurred as the 56th in the 73-member lineup of Saros series 124.
The takeaways for the Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022, partial solar eclipse belonging to Saros series 124 are that the event occurs as the 55th in the 73-member lineup of Saros series 124; that the October 2022 partial solar eclipse numbers as the second of 20 partial solar eclipses in Saros series 124's second set of partial solar eclipses and as 11th of the 29 partial solar eclipses (first set's nine; second set's 20) in Saros series 124; that the October 2022 partial solar eclipse's predecessor in Saros series 124 was the partial solar eclipse of Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, which opened the second set of partial solar eclipses in Saros series 124; and that the successor of the October 2022 partial solar eclipse will be the partial solar eclipse of Sunday, Nov. 4, 2020.
