Mistur, anglicized The Mist, third thriller in the Hidden Iceland trilogy, appends The Silence of the Falling Snow, short story also authored by Ragnar Jónasson and also about affections aging apathetically, aversively.

Pages 304 through 310 in the English translation by Victoria Cribb in 2020 from the original Icelandic in 2017 broaches the police shift for Christmas Eve. Christmas Eve celebrations commence at 6 p.m., when the church bells call their congregations to Christmas Mass even as non-believing compatriots cluster around Christmas dinner tables. Detective Inspector Ari (“eagle”) Thór (“thunder”) Arason delights in not doing police duties since he dedicated himself to seminary studies before he decided upon law enforcement.

The Jónasson-enclosed map emphasizes Hrinvegur (“Ring Road”) from Reykjavík to Álftanes (“swan peninsula”), Gardabær (“garden town”), Selfoss (“seal waterfall”), Kirkjubæjarklaustur (“church farm cloister”) and Höfn (“harbor”).

The seven-page story furnishes no map of 1,322-kilometer- (821.55-mile-) long, round-trip Ring Road from Reykjavík (“smoky bay”) to Borgarnes, Blönduós, Akureyri, Egilsstadir, Höfn, Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Selfoss.

Akureyri (“sandbank field”), as greatest municipality in Nordurland eystra (“Northeastern Region”) within Nordausturkjördæmi (“Northeast Constituency”) gets northbound traffic to, southbound traffic from Siglufjördur, one hour away. The 10.6-kilometer- (6.59-mile-) long, two-tunnel Hédinsfjardargöng (“Hedin’s fjord tunnel”) heads coastal northern traffic through Fjallabyggd (“mountain settlement”) eastward to, east-southeastward along Eyjafjördur (“island fjord”) to Akureyri. Fjallabyggd municipality is a municipal indication that, since 2006, includes as one municipality under one government previously independent municipalities, Ólafsfjördur (“Olaf’s fjord”) and Siglufjördur (“sailing fjord”).

Christmas Eve nobody and somebody respectively join Ari in The Silence of the Falling Snow and Hulda Hermannsdóttir (“unknown soldier’s daughter”) in Mistur, anglicized The Mist.

Höfudborgarsvædid (Greater Reykjavík, “The Capital Region”) kindles the Hidden Iceland trilogy about Detective Inspector Hulda Hermannsdóttir even as Siglufjördur kindles the Dark Iceland sextet about Ari.

Street maps in Jónasson’s Snjóblinda (“Snowblind”), Náttblinda (“Nightblind”) and Vetrarmein (“Winterkill”) locate Ari’s lodgings on Eyrargata, Halla’s lodgings on Hólavegur and Siglufjördur police station on Gránugata. His Eyrargata (“gravel-bank/moist-earth/mud street”) address makes Ari nearer Hólavegur (“high road”) than the Gránugata (“gray street”) address where deputy and second-in-command Ögmundur (“sharp-pointed protection”) manages alone. Ari needs 10 minutes to navigate streets north of town square and westward to the nice neighborhood into which 80-year-old Halla (“rest”) nestles for 30-plus years.

Mistur, anglicized The Mist, and The Silence of the Falling Snow respectively offer Christmas Eve in eastern and southwestern Iceland and in northern Iceland and abroad.

Christmas Eve proves problematic since Kristín (“Christian”) prefers Ari not to be present in Sweden, where their son Stefnir (“helmsman”) passes his third birthday December 23.

Siglufjördur quarters in Halla, with both children, like Stefnir, abroad, perhaps in Europe, at least one person other than Ari around whom nobody queues for Christmas. Halla requires Ari, not Ögmundur, to read in her living room letters that she receives every Christmas for 30 years now from her dead husband, Einar. Ari strategizes with Halla until, crime solved, he speeds, with 10 minutes to spare, home to savor smoked Christmas ham to radio sounds of Christmas Mass.
