A killer perhaps abhors or adores New York coffee generally, or Chambers Street coffee specifically, in NYPD Puzzle, appearing in 2014 as number 15 in 20 Puzzle Lady mysteries by Parnell Hall.

NYPD Puzzle bears only bits about drinks and eats bought by Bakerhavenites or brought to their tables fresh or prepared from Bakerhaven gardens and grocery stores. Medical examiner offices perhaps contain no coffee or Dr. Barney Nathan chooses to consumer Cushman’s Bake Shop coffee, not characterized as cream-free, creamy, sugar-free or sugary. Daily dieting for diminutive girth and clothing sizes directs attorney Becky Baldwin to chewing gum of undivulged brand and flavor at a Merritt Parkway service station.

The enigmatic driver of a black sedan exits the Merritt Parkway service station with soda unelucidated as to brand, flavor, metal or plastic packaging and size.

Cora Felton, who fancies something to drink, something to eat, something to smoke as she figures out crime scenes, perhaps finds service-station coffee not fresh enough.

Sherry Carter gives good-looking, good-smelling, good-tasting grub to husband Aaron Grant, daughter Jennifer Carter Grant and Aunt Cora, whose dog Buddy gets more than puppy biscuits. Cora has a salmon dinner honed by her niece to helpings at whose preparation, proportions and provenance, perhaps with heaping side dishes, Parnell Hall never hints. Unidentified teas in crossword constructor and solver Harvey Beerbaum’s liquid diet never impress Cora, who inclines more toward caffeinated coffee than even perfectionist Sherry’s decaffeinated coffee.

Cora journeyed 15 years ago from the Big Apple, where New York coffee perhaps joined all her drinks, eats and smokes, for more than Bakerhaven coffee.

Cora keeps her Bakerhaven coffee over-milked and over-sugared with a latte (from Latin lac via Italian latte, “milk”), and an unidentified scone, from Cushman’s Bake Shop.

Chief Dale Harper likes black coffee and a blueberry muffin so much that he leaves Bakerhaven police station twice in one morning for Cushman’s Bake Shop. Nobody mentions lunch drinks when Cora and Sergeant Crowley meet, near the downtown police, for cheeseburgers and French fries at a diner also monikered burger joint. Notable eateries nestle into New York City culinary niches, of which Crowley only names Peter Luger Steak House in Brooklyn as necessitating nest-egging months to afford.

Cora and Crowley opt for New York coffee, in NYPD Puzzle, when they respectively order black coffee, no sugar, and cappuccino at Chambers Street coffee shop.

Sherry, whose computer time provides her with puzzle software such as Crossword Compiler and shortcake recipes, prepares coffee and pecan pie for Becky, Cora and Dale.

Country Kitchen bar and restaurant quenches Becky’s and Cora’s thirsts, with Scotch on the rocks, not frozen daiquiri, for the former and Coke for the latter. Becky and Cora respectively relish a latte, not Irish (whiskeyed) coffee, and a grande latte, then a cappuccino (“[red-brown-colored Capuchin monastic order] hoodlet”) from Bakerhaven Starbucks. Sherry, whose condiments and spices perhaps strengthen hot drinks, stores only cooking wine and serves hot chocolate and cocoa from water, milk and Nesquik powdered chocolate.

Barney, First Selectman Iris Cooper, half the town, thanks to crime-thwarting Cora and Crowley, throng for Cushman’s Manhattan-made scones with Bakerhaven-made latte, not New York coffee.

Chambers Street anchors such famous buildings as one of the world’s largest government office buildings, the Manhattan Municipal Building. It nevertheless appeals to Cora and Crowley because of its coffee shops.
