Attorney Becky Baldwin and her bodyguarding, chaperoning private investigator, Cora Felton, are in New York for an appointment about which both are uncomfortable. Bakerhaven acquaintances and New Yorkers in NYPD Puzzle each are going to be at least one less, acknowledged as arising from unnatural deaths, for when 2020 censuses are taken six years hence.

Cora, whose last ex-husband, Melvin Crabtree, perhaps balked at being back with her, belittles medical examiner Dr. Barney Nathan not breaking up with his wife Judy. Parole 12 years into Stuart Tanner’s 25-year sentence concerns Cora and Chief Dale Harper, whose Bakerhaven police force consists of Officers Sam Brogan and Dan Finley. Cora disdains Mae Hendricks as Cushman’s Bake Shop fellow customer, dyed redhead, home-renting spinster and tax assessor and town clerk with two other undivulged town duties.

Attorney Becky Baldwin and Cora, as bodyguarding, chaperoning private investigator, enter the New York penthouse apartment of Charles Kessington, expired from a small-caliber gun-inflicted head wound.

Charles fit into Becky’s professional life as friendless, wealthy client whose family lawyer already finished his will figuring the American Cancer Society as full, sole heir.

His young parents getting unspecified terminal cancer grants Charles, as only Kessington child and heir, such great wealth that he never graduates from New York University. The 14-story building harbors one corridor and elevator for three penthouse apartments, with Apt. P[enthouse]-Three huger than P-One on one side and P-Two on the other. Someone iniquitous interacts intimately enough to inform Bakerhaven and New York prison inmates of alternate ingress to inquisitive lobby check-ins and of Charles' bedroom-wall, crackable safe.

Just one killer journeying judiciously back and forth between the Empire State and the Constitution State jeopardizes lives, not assets, of New York and Bakerhaven acquaintances.

Law practice as only town lawyer keeps bills paid and savings perhaps non-existent for Becky, whom Bakerhaven acquaintances know as skinny, slender, slim, thin and trim.

Becky nevertheless latches onto a less than legal license plate because she never loses a loathsome driver whose black sedan leads her down dark country lanes. Nobody mentions what car model or what house model Becky maintains even though both muster enough comfort and security to make her looks and wardrobe picture-perfect. Perhaps she nestles into a frame two-story, like the East Hampton niche rented by Mae Hendricks, unlike the latter in not needing interior rooms neat-freak nice.

Less and more recent New York and Bakerhaven acquaintances obstruct a killer ousting more than one occupant each from big-city and small-town occurrences in 2020 censuses.

Probation pronounced for restraining-order violations place New York resident Dennis Pride, physically and verbally abusive and aggressive ex-husband of Cora’s niece Sherry Carter Grant, in Bakerhaven.

Cora quits her ex-nephew-in-law from suspect lists since Dennis quests an executive vice presidency in his father-in-law’s company and safe delivery for his five-months pregnant wife. Becky and Susan never respectively resorted to other than reasonable relationships with high school sweetheart Aaron Grant, Sherry’s second husband, and with separated husband, Sergeant Crowley. Sherry and two-year-old daughter Jennifer Carter Grant seeing Brenda Wallenstein, the former’s best friend and Dennis’ second wife, in Central Park suggests Grant and Pride reconciliations.

Treachery to tips from incarcerated New York and Bakerhaven acquaintances perhaps turns a transgressor into a prison escapee and prison tallies one less for 2020 censuses.
