Puccini's Turandot is the March 16, 2024, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing at 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the 15th of the 2023-2024 season's lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
Turandot by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924) receives 17 performances in the 2023-2024 season. The first through fourth performances were held Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, March 2, at 8:00 p.m.; Tuesday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m.; and Friday, March 8, at 7:00 p.m. The fifth through 17th, closing performances are distributed across March, April and June. March's remaining four performances are scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday matinee, March 16, at 12:00 p.m.; Wednesday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, March 23, at 8:00 p.m. April's five performances are slated for Wednesday, April 3, at 7:00 p.m.; Saturday matinee, April 6, at 1:00 p.m.; Thursday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday matinee, April 14, at 3:00 p.m.; and Friday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. May's only Turandot performance is set for Wednesday, May 29, at 7:00 p.m. June's three performances will begin with a Saturday matinee, June 1, at 1:00 p.m. The month's last two performances are scheduled for Tuesday, June 4, at 7:30 p.m.; and Friday, June 7, at 8:00 p.m.
Oksana Lyniv conducts the first 13 performances, including the March 16 Saturday matinee broadcast. The Ukrainian conductor made her Met Opera debut in the 2023-2024 season's first Turandot performance, Wednesday, Feb. 28.
She shares the role with Marco Armiliato, who conducts the 14 through 17th, closing performances. The Italian conductor had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, in the opera company’s 1,048th performance of Puccini's La Bohème.
Elena Pankratova sings the title role in the February, March (including the March 16 Saturday matinee broadcast), May and June performances. The Russian soprano had made her Met Opera debut in the 2023-2024 season's first Turandot performance, Wednesday, Feb. 28.
She shares the title role with Christine Goerke, who sings Turandot in April's eight performances. The American dramatic soprano made her Met Opera debut Monday, April 3, 1995, in the ensemble role of Woman with Baby in the opera company’s eighth performance of The Ghosts of Versailles by American classical composer John Corigliano (born Feb. 16, 1938).
Aleksandra Kurzak appears as self-sacrificing servant Liù in the first four and sixth through eighth (including the March 16 Saturday matinee broadcast) performances. The Polish operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, as Olympia in the opera company’s 233rd performance of Les Contes d’Hoffmann by German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach (June 20, 1819-Oct. 5, 1880).
Aleksandra Kurzak shares the role with four sopranos. Juliana Grigoryan, Gabriella Reyes, Angel Blue and Olga Kulchynska also sing Liù in the 2023-2024 season.
Juliana Grigoryan sings Liù in the fifth performance, Wednesday, March 13. Her appearance as Liù marks the Armenian soprano's Met Opera debut.
Gabriella Reyes sings Liù in April's first two (Wednesday, April 3; Saturday matinee, April 6) and last two (Sunday matinee, April 14; Friday, April 19) performances. The Nicaraguan-American sopran had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, Sep. 26, 2018, as the Priestess in the opera company's 1,163rd performance of Aida by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Angel Blue sings Liù in April's third performance, Thursday, April 11. The American operatic soprano had made her Met Opera debut Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, as Mimì in the opera company’s 1,306th performance of Puccini's La Bohème.
Olga Kulchynska sings Liù in the season's last three Turandot performances, taking place Wednesday, May 29; Saturday, June 1; Tuesday, June 4; and Friday, June 7. The Ukrainian soprano had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, as Musetta in the opera company's 1,332nd performance of Puccini's La Bohème.
SeokJong Baek sings riddle-solving Calàf in the season's February, March, May and June performances. The South Korean tenor had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Sep. 28, 2023, as Ismaele in the opera company's 66th performance of Verdi's Nabucco.
He shares the role with Roberto Alagna, who sings Calàf in April's five performances. The French tenor’s Metropolitan Opera debut happened April 10, 1996, as Rodolfo in the opera company’s 1,031st performance of Puccini's La Bohème.
Vitalij Kowaljow sings Timur, Calàf's vanquished father, formerly King of Tartary, in the February and March (including the March 16 Saturday matinee broadcast) performances. The Ukrainian bass had made his Met Opera debut St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17, 2003, as the Babylonian High Priest of Bel (Ba'al) in the opera company's 24th performance of Verdi's Nabucco.
He shares the role with Chinese bass Peixin Chen, who sings Timur in April's five performances, and American bass Soloman Howard, who appears as Timur in the May and June performances. Peixin Chen had made his Metropolitan Opera debut Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019, as Sarastro, in the production's holiday version, in the opera company's 449th performance of the opera. Soloman Howard made his Metropolitan Opera debut Oct. 30, 2014, as the King in the opera company’s 1,133rd performance of Verdi's Aida.
The 2023-2024 season's presentation of Turandot marks the 17th revival of the new production that debuted Thursday, March 12, 1987, under the directorship of Franco Zeffirelli (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019). The Italian film, opera and television director and producer had made his Met Opera debut Friday, March 6, 1964, in the opera company's 67th performance of Falstaff by 19th century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Franco Zeffirelli served as director and set designer of his new Turandot production. His production team comprised Anna Anni and Dada Saligeri, costume designers; Gil Wechsler, lighting designer; and Chiang Ching, choreographer. Italian costume designer Dada Saligeri and New York-based Chinese choreographer Chiang Ching had made their Met Opera debuts in the new Turandot production's debut Thursday, March 12, 1987. Italian costume designer Anna Anni (Nov. 21, 1926-Jan. 1, 2011) had made her Met Opera debut Thursday, Feb. 17, 1972, in the opera company's 42nd performance of La Fille du Régiment by 19th century-Italian bel canto opera composer Gaetano Donizetti (Nov. 29, 1797-April 8, 1848). American theatrical lighting designer Gil Wechsler had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Jan. 18, 1977, in the opera company's 74th performance of Le Prophète by German Jewish opera composer Giacomo Meyerbeer (Sep. 5, 1791-May 2, 1864).
Gounod's Roméo et Juliette broadcasts March 23 as the 16th of the 2023-2024 season's 27 Saturday matinee broadcasts. American theater director Bartlett Sher's revived production, which debuted in the 2016-2017 season, airs at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time.
