Gounod's Roméo et Juliette is the March 23, 2024, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time as the 16th of the 2023-2024 season's lineup of 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
Roméo et Juliette by French composer Charles-François Gounod (June 17, 1818-Oct. 18, 1893) receives seven performances in the 2023-2024 season. The first through third performances took place Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 7:00 p.m.; Sunday matinee, March 10, at 3:00 p.m.; and Friday, March 15, at 8:00 p.m. The fourth through seventh, closing performances are scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday matinee broadcast, March 23, at 1:00 p.m.; Wednesday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday matinee, March 30, at 1:00 p.m.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Met Opera's Jeanette Lerman-Neubauer Music Director, conducts all seven performances, including the March 23 Saturday matinee radio broadcast. His conductorship of Roméo et Juliett adds a 24th opera to his Met Opera portfolio. The French Canadian conductor and pianist had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Dec. 31, 2009, in the opera company's 946th performance of Carmen by French Romantic Era composer Georges Bizet (Oct. 25, 1838-June 3, 1875).
Nadine Sierra appears in all seven performances in the title role of Juliette. Her appearances in Roméo et Juliette add a seventh role to her Met Opera portfolio. The American soprano had made her Met Opera debut Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015, as Gilda in the opera company’s 874th performance of Rigoletto by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Benjamin Bernheim appears in all seven performances in the title role of Roméo. His appearances in Roméo et Juliette add a second opera to his Met Opera portfolio. The French lyric tenor had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, Nov. 10, 2022, as the Duke of Mantua in the opera company's 913th performance of Verdi's Rigoletto.
Will Liverman appears in all seven performances as Mercutio, Roméo's friend, who is killed in a dual with Capulet representative Tybalt. His appearances in Roméo et Juliette add a sixth opera to his Met Opera portfolio. The American operatic baritone had made his Met Opera debut Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, as Malcom Fleet in the Metropolitan Opera premiere of Marnie by American contemporary classical music composer Nico Asher Muhly (born Aug. 26, 1981).
Frederick Ballentine appears in all seven performances as Tybalt, whom Roméo kills in a dual to avenge Mercutio's death. His appearances in Roméo et Juliette add a second opera to his Met Opera portfolio. The American tenor had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Sep. 23, 2019, as Sporting Life in the opera company's 55th performance of Porgy and Bess by American composer and pianist George Gershwin (Sept. 26, 1898-July 11, 1937).
Alfred Walker appears in all seven performances as Frère Laurent, who conducts the marriage of Roméo and Juliette and who gives Juliette a deathlike sleeping potion. Roméo et Juliette numbers as the first of 19 operas in his Met Opera portfolio. The American bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Monday, March 16, 1998, as Grégorio in the opera company’s 294th performance of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette.
Samantha Hankey appears in all seven performances in the trouser role Stéphano, Roméo's page. Her appearances in Roméo et Juliette add a ninth opera to her Met Opera portfolio. The American mezzo-soprano had made her Met Opera debut Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, as Pantalis in the opera company's 68th performance of Mefistofele by Italian composer and librettist Arrigo Boito (Feb. 24, 1842-June 10, 1918).
Eve Gigliotti sings Gertrude, Juliette's nurse, in all seven performances. Her appearances in Roméo et Juliette add a 13th role to her Met Opera portfolio. The 2023-2024 season's presentation of Roméo et Juliette marks the second revival of the new production that debuted New Year's Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, under the directorship of Bartlett Sher (Feb. 12, 1923-June 15, 2019). Roméo et Juliette sequences as the second of the eight operas in his Met Opera portfolio. The American theater director had made his Met Opera debut Monday, Jan. 28, 2013, with the debut of his Rigoletto production, in the opera company's 842nd performance of Verdi's Rigoletto.
Bartlett Sher's production team comprises Michael Yeargan, set designer; Catherine Zuber, costume designer; Jennifer Tipton, lighting designer; Chase Brock, choreographer; and B.H. American opera and theater set designer Michael Yeargan had made his Met Opera debut Thursday, March 11, 1993, in the opera company's 53rd performance of Ariadne auf Naxos by German late Romantic and early modern composer Richard Strauss (June 11, 1864-Sept. 8, 1949). England-born costume designer Catherine Zuber had made her Met Opera debut Friday, Nov. 10, 2006, in Bartlett Sher's new production of Il Barbiere di Siviglia, which debuted in the opera company's 551st performance of the barber-focused opera by 19th-century Italian composer Gioachino Antonio Rossini (Feb. 29, 1792-Nov. 13, 1868). American lighting designer Jennifer Tipton had made her 997, in the opera company's ninth performance of The Rake's Progress by Russian-born composer, conductor and pianist Igor Stravinsky (June 17, 1882-April 6, 1971). Brooklyn-based choreographer and dancer Chase Brock had made his Met Opera debut Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016, in Bartlett Sher's new production of Roméo et Juliette, which debuted in the opera company's 330th performance of Gounod's Shakespearean-based opera.
Verdi's Requiem broadcasts March 30 as the 17th of the 2023-2024 season's 27 Saturday matinee radio broadcasts. The Saturday radio matinee airs Met Opera's Requiem performance from Wednesday, Sep. 27, 2023.
Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore broadcasts on the following Saturday, April 6, at 1:00 p.m. as the 18th of the 2023-2024 season's Saturday matinee radio broadcasts. The Saturday radio matinee airs Met Opera's April 6, 1974, performance of Donizetti's melodramma giocoso (comic melodrama) about a fake magical love potion.

If you ever come to Bilbao and want to give your support to animals, @catcafebilbao is a must visit. Finally had the chance to see the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao & found some beautiful works there . . . definitely nice to appreciate some fine art. And we had a lovely sushi lunch . . . .
