Summary: The Magic Flute is the Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2022, Saturday radio matinee, airing as third of the 2022-2023 season's 24 Saturday matinee broadcasts.

The Magic Flute is the Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, 2022, Saturday radio matinee, airing at noon, 12 p.m., Eastern Time, as the third of the 2022-2023 Met Opera season's lineup of 24 Saturday matinee opera broadcasts.
The 2022-2023 Met Opera season's performances of The Magic Flute revive Julie Taymor's 2006 production of Die Zauberflöte by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791). The special holiday presentation offers an abridged, English-language adaptation of Mozart's musical fairy tale.
The Magic Flute receives nine performances in the 2022-2023 season. Seven performances are offered in December. The season's first performance of The Magic Flute took place Friday, Dec. 16, at 7:00 p.m. The month's additional six performances, including the Saturday radio broadcast, are scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 18, at 3:00 p.m.; Thursday, Dec. 22, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday matinee radio broadcast, Christmas Eve, Dec. 24, at noon; Monday, Dec. 26, at 7:00 p.m.; Wednesday, Dec. 28, at 11:00 a.m.; Friday, Dec. 30, at 7:00 p.m.
Two performances are slated for January 2023. The month's two performances will be offered Monday, Jan. 2, at 7:00 p.m., and closing night, Friday, Jan. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
The Magic Flute's nine performances basically are shared by two casts. The first cast appears in the opera's Saturday matinee radio broadcast.
Duncan Ward conducts all nine performances of The Magic Flute. The season's first performance of The Magic Flute marked the British conductor's Met Opera debut.
Joélle Harvey sings Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, in the season's first five Magic Flute performances, including the Dec. 24 matinee broadcast. The American soprano's appearances as Pamina mark her first reprisal of the role in which she made her Met Opera debut Sunday, Dec. 15, 2019, in the opera company's 451st performance of Die Zauberflöte.
Aleksandra Olczyk appears as the scheming Queen of the Night in all nine performances of The Magic Flute. The season's first performance of The Magic Flute marked the Polish soprano's Met Opera debut.
Ben Bliss sings magic flute-protected Prince Tamino in the season's first five Magic Flute performances, including the Dec. 24 matinee broadcast. His appearances as Tamino mark his second reprisal of the role that he had added to his Met Opera portfolio in the 2016-2017 season. The American tenor had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2014, as Vogelgesang in the opera company's 410th performance of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by German Romantic era composer-librettist Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813-Feb. 13, 1883).
Joshua Hopkins appears as bird-catcher Papageno in the season's first five, including the Dec. 24 matinee, and seventh and ninth, closing performances of The Magic Flute. His appearances as Papageno mark his first reprisal of the role that he had added to his Met Opera portfolio in the 2019-2020 season. The Canadian baritone made his Met Opera debut Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2009, as Ping in the opera company’s 271st performance of Turandot by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924).
Alan Held sings the Speaker in the season's first five, including the Dec. 24 matinee, and seventh and ninth, closing performances of The Magic Flute. His appearances as the Speaker add the English-language version of the role to his Met Opera portfolio. He had added the Speaker in the opera's German-language original in the 1992-1993 season. The American bass-baritone had made his Met Opera debut Monday, April 17, 1989, as Mr. Redburn in the opera company's 33rd performance of Billy Budd by Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten (Nov. 22, 1913-Dec. 4, 1976).
Soloman Howard sings head priest Sarastro in the season's first five, including the Dec. 24 matinee, and seventh and ninth, closing performances of The Magic Flute. His appearances as Sarastro mark his first reprisal of the role that he had added to his Met Opera portfolio in the 2019-2020 season. The American bass made his Metropolitan Opera debut Oct. 30, 2014, as the King in the opera company’s 1,133rd performance of Aida by 19th-century Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Rodell Rosel appears as Pamina-fixated slave chief Monostatos in the season's first five, including the Dec. 24 matinee, and seventh and ninth, closing performances of The Magic Flute. His appearances as Monostatos mark his second reprisal of the role that he had added to his Met Opera portfolio in the 2019-2020 season. The Filipino tenor had made his Met Opera debut Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2009, as Valzacchi in the opera company’s 370th performance of Der Rosenkavalier by German late Romantic and early modern composer Richard Strauss (June 11, 1864-Sep. 8, 1949).
The 2022-2023 Met Opera season's lineup of Saturday matinee opera broadcasts pauses on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31. Instead of an opera, "Met Debuts on the Air" broadcasts at 1:00 p.m. as "Highlights of artists making their Metropolitan Opera debuts during live broadcasts."
The 2022-2023 Met Opera season's Saturday matinee opera broadcasts resume one week later. Medea by Italian Classical and Romantic composer Luigi Cherubini (Sep. 14, 1760-March 15, 1842) airs Jan. 7 at 1:00 p.m. as the fourth of the season's lineup of 24 Saturday matinee opera broadcasts.
