The second book bears names that brace Mannanafnanefnd (Icelandic Naming Committee, Personal Names Committee, literally “Man Name Committee”) 20th- and 21st-century name lists backtrackable to 1991. Ása (“goddess"), Elín (“torch”) Reyndal (“decision[-making] ruler”) Einarsson (“one army’s son”), Gunna (“warrior”), Hanna ("mercy"), Helena (“torch”), Jódís (“horse goddess”) and Kristín comprise feminine personal names. Jónasson delivers more feminine personal names through his author’s note to the chapter, Spring Comes to the Valley, displayed at the end of Nattblinda, as Nightblind.
The feminine personal names therefore embrace Jónasson’s mother Katrín (“both, faraway, 100, pure”?), daughters Kira (“sun”) and Natalía (“Christ’s birthday”) and wife María (“beloved”) Margrét (“pearl”).
Addi (“eagle, noble”?), Ari Thór (“eagle thunder’s son”), Bartur (“prince”), Börkur (“bark”), Eggert (“[weapon] edge strong”), Gunnar (“battle[-fighting] warrior") and Helgi (“holy”) figure as masculine names.
Herjólfur (“warrior wolf”), Hlynur (“maple tree”), Ingólfur (“lance[-bearing] wolf”), Jónmundur (“gracious god[‘s] protection”), Ottó (“eight”), Stefnir (“steersman”), Tómas (“twin”) and Valberg (“slain help”) garner masculine-name status. The patronymics Arason (“eagle’s son”), Gunnarsson (“battle[-fighting] warrior’s son”), Níelsson (“victory people’s son”) and Einarsdóttir (“one army’s son”) respectively hail Ari’s, Gunnar’s, Ottó’s and Elín’s fathers. Front-page poetry and two plot references respectively integrate Thorsteinn Jónsson (“thunder-stone gracious-god’s son”), Halldór Laxness (“rock-thunder salmon-peninsula”) and Thórbergur Thórdarson (“thunder-helper thunder-army”) among masculine personal names.
An author’s note joins a chapter from Jónasson’s paternal grandfather’s Siglfirskir söguþættir (Romanized Siglfirskir söguthættir, “Stories from Siglufjördur”) after the ending pages of Nattblinda, as Nightblind.
Jónasson readers therefore know as full masculine personal names Freysteinn (“lord’s stone”) Gunnarsson (“battle[-fighting] army leader”), Ragnar (“decision[-making] warrior”) Jónasson (“gracious god’s son”) and Jónas Ragnarsson.
The author’s note after the last page of Nattblinda, as Nightblind, lodges the patronymics Guðjónsdóttir (Romanized Gudjónsdóttir, “good gracious god’s daughter”) and Johannsdóttir (“gracious god’s daughter”). Kristín and Valberg perhaps motored from Reykjavík by Hringvegur (Route 1, “Ring Road” literally), also monikered Þjóðvegur 1 (Romanized Thjódvegur 1, “nation[‘s] road, people[‘s] road” literally). The west-sider from Öldugata (“century road”) and the south-towner from Kópavogur (“seal pup inlet”) navigate Route 1 to Akureyri (“sandbank field”) and Route 76 to Siglufjördur.
Nattblinda, as Nightblind, offers motorists, Akureyri to Siglufjördur and back, Strákagöng (Strákar Tunnel, “boy passage” literally) and Héðinsfjarðargöng (Romanized Hédinsfjardargöng, Hédinsfjördur Tunnel, “fur/skin jacket fjord tunnel”).
Hédinsfjördur Tunnel permits traffic between Siglufjördur and Ólafsfjörður (Romanized Ólafsfjördur, “ancestor[‘s] legacy” literally) or from Siglufjördur to Ólafsfjördur, Ólafsfjarðargöng (Romanized Ólafsfjardargöng, Ólafsfjörður Tunnel), Akureyri and back.
The front-matter street map quarters eight main streets, of which Gránugata (“gray road”) and Eyrargata (“gravel-bank road”) perhaps qualify as the most quintessential to plot lines. Ari Thór resides in a detached house, rendered perhaps rent-free to him as police department staffer, on Eyrargata and retains office space in the Gránugata station. Downtown Siglufjördur likewise shelters Hólavegur (“hillock way”), Hvanneyrarbraut (“gravel way”), Norðurgata (Romanized Nordurgata, “north way”), Suðurgata (Romanized Sudurgata, “south way”) and Þormóðsgata (Romanized Thormóðsgata, “thunder-courage way”).
The other main street, Aðalgata (Romanized Adalgata, “main road”), takes townspeople in Nattblinda, as Nightblind, to and from the Co-op, the Theatre and the Town Square.
