Thorsteinn Jónsson advises that men, weather, words, all are astray in Nattblinda, as Nightblind, second thriller about Siglufjörður Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason in the Dark Iceland sextet by author Ragnar Jónasson.

The second book begins with three lines borrowed from the poem Broken in the collection Skessukatlar (2013, hole in a rock, rock hole, “giant's kettles” literally). Þorsteinn Jónsson (March 15, 1938-Jan. 28, 2018) poetically considers connections between uncontrolled weather and words and their consequences for emotional, impulsive, proud Ari Thór (“eagle thunder”). Perhaps depression about, disconnection from men, weather and words drive a mysterious man throughout July 1982 into a psychiatric ward, perhaps in Akureyri (“sandbank field”) Hospital.

The poetic collection elicited for Þorsteinn Jónsson (Romanized Thorsteinn Jónsson, “thunder-stone gracious-God’s son” literally) his fifth nomination for the Nordic Council Literature Prize that eluded him.

Novelist and poet Jónsson figured among DV Culture (1981), Þórbergur Þórðarson Style (1991), Icelandic Literature (1992), Guðmundur Böðvarsson Poetry (2004) and Jónas Hallgrímsson (2009) Prize recipients.

Jónsson, as Þorsteinn frá Hamri (Romanized Thorsteinn fra Hamri, “thunder-stone from hammer” literally), garnered a literary novel prize and a translation prize in the same year. The novel Haust í Skírisskógi (1980, “Autumn in Skírisskógur”) and the translation Gestir í gamla trénu (1980, “Guests in the old tree”) harvested the next-year honors. Jónsson novels include Himinbjargarsaga eða Skógardraumur (1969, “The Story of Himinbjörg or a Forest Dream”) and Vatns götur og blóðs (1989, “Streets of Water and Blood”).

Ten words journey from the last poetry by Thorsteinn Jónsson to join all the words by two judgmental men jostled by weather in Nattblinda, as Nightblind.

Thorsteinn knew his first publication, as Þorsteinn frá Hamri, with Í svörtum kufli (1958, “In a black cassock”), which kindled 25 more books of collected poetry.

The 99 percent of Icelanders listed as literate like such Jónsson poetry collections as Fiðrið úr sæng daladrottningar (1977, “The feathers from the valley queen's duvet”). Spjótalög á spegil (1982, “Spear-thrusted Mirror” literally) and Sæfarinn sofandi (1992, “The Sleeping Sailor”) may be modeled as among the most mentioned of Jónsson poetry collections. Það talar í trjánum (1995, “It Speaks in the Trees”) and Medan pu vaktir (1999, “While You Woke Up”) number among most noteworthy Jónsson poetry collections.

Perhaps Ragnar Jónasson offers the poem Broken by Thorsteinn Jónsson for Ari Thór, one man as astray as other men, weather, words in Nattblinda, as Nightblind.

Jónsson passed from Hamri, Þverárhlíð (Romanized Thverarhlith, “intersecting slope”), Borgarfjörður (Romanized Borgarfjordur, “cliff fjord”), to Reykholt (“smoky hillock”), Borgarfjörður, for Héraðsskólinn (Romanized Herathsskolinn, “county school”) studies.

Thorsteinn qualified as Reykholt District School statistics graduate (1954) and Kennaraskóli Íslands (“Icelandic Teacher Training College”) student (1955-1957) and Kópavogur (“seal bay”) Library assistant librarian (1961-1967). Jónsson raised sons Egil (“terror”) with artist, podologist, writer Guðrún Svava Svavarsdóttir and Þórir (Romanized Thorir, “thunder-fighter”), Böðvar (“battle[-fighting] warrior”) and Kolbeinn (“coal leg”) with Ásta. Daughters Dagný (“day new”) and Guðný (Romanized Gudný, “god new”) with Ásta and Guðrún (Romanized Gudrún, “god[‘s] secret”) with third wife, violinist Laufey Sigurðardóttir, survive him.
