Abandoned areas around active tunnels are awful for Siglufjörður new hires, in Nattblinda, as Nightblind, second thriller in the Dark Iceland sextet about Detective Inspector Ari Thór Arason by author Ragnar Jónasson.

Beautiful Siglufjörður (Romanized Siglufjördur) brings Ari Thór (“eagle thunder”) and Herjólfur (“warrior wolf”), Elín (“torch”) and Gunnar (“battle[-fighting] warrior”) to the police station and the mayoralty. The fishing village conserves an abandoned, creepy, crumbling, lead-walled house constructed between the cliff edge and the 800-meter- (2,624.67-foot-) long Strákagöng (Strákar Tunnel, “boy passage” literally). Drug dealers perhaps drive along Siglufjarðarvegur (Romanized Siglufjardarvegur, Route 76, “mast, sailing fjord path” literally), through Strákar Tunnel, to the stash house delegated for their deliveries.

Illegal encroachments extract Ari Thór Arason (“eagle’s son”) from girlfriend Kristín (“Christian”) and son Stefnir (“steersman”) and Herjólfur from wife Helena (“torch”) and his namesake son.

Furtive figures fluster Mayor Gunnarsson (“battle[-fighting] warrior’s son”), whose wife and two children favor Norway, less than Deputy Mayor Elín Reyndal (“reality”) fears Valberg (“slain helper”).

Drug-related death gets Tómas (“twin”) from his Reykjavík- (“smoky bay”) based job and wife back to Siglufjördur drug-related information sources and interim detective inspector duties there. Second cousin Addi (“noble” or “eagle”?) Gunna (“battle”) hints at drug hoards hidden in and harvested from the home once housing a drowned fisherman’s surviving family. Baldur (“prince”) inhabited the house with his widowed mother and, until 1961, his twin brother, Börkur (“bark”), intimate with Jónmundur’s (“horse protector”) sister, Jódís (“horse goddess”).

An old, solitary man, as second owner, judged the house jostled by mountain and sea winds perfect for his retirement in 1980 in Nattblinda, as Nightblind.

No reader knows the names of the Akureyri (“sandbank field”) police chief, of the owner-occupant of the twins’ house or of the owner-occupant of Tómas’ house.

And yet the last pages let us learn the name of the mysterious lodger of the psychiatric ward under Dr. Helgi (“holy”) and nurse Ása (“goddess”). Perhaps it matters not that nobody mentions the names of Ari Thór’s dead parents even as perhaps it matters some not mentioning Kristín’s living parents’ names. Perhaps nobody needs to note the names of the Akureyri technical team members who navigate cold, snowy roads to net extant clues from two crime scenes.

Abandoned areas in Nattblinda, as Nightblind, overwhelm new hires who, as Siglufjördur outsiders, never obtain historical, ongoing, rumored events and names that occur to Siglufjördur insiders.

Extreme weather five months yearly on the precarious road from 1946 prevented land peregrinations to and from Siglufjördur until Strákar Tunnel’s year-round opening Nov. 10, 1967.

Siglufjardarvegur and Strákagöng traffic perhaps quicken queuing information about Kristín coffee-breaking and dining with an eligible fellow doctor on the Akureyri Hospital staff 1.25 hours away. Jónasson never relinquishes the romance-minded doctor’s name even as he reveals the name of piano teacher Ugla (“owl”), who romances Ari Thór in Snjóblinda, as Snowblind. Perhaps it suggests semi-complete knowledge supplied by daily life more than superfluous details that Jónasson never shares the names of Herjólfur’s daughter or of Tómas’ wife.

Abandoned areas traumatize new hires excepting Ottó N. Níelsson, town councilor transferring himself, if not all his wealth, from Reykjavík back home in Nattblinda, as Nightblind.

The two-tunnel Héðinsfjarðargöng (Romanized Hédinsfjardargöng, "fur jacket fjord tunnel" or "skin jacket fjord tunnel" literally) amplifies vehicular traffic between Ólafsfjörður (Romanized Ólafsfjördur, "ancestor['s] legacy fjord" literally) and Siglufjörður since Oct. 2, 2010.
