Patches Arighten Broken on NCIS: Hawai’i and Hawaiian Calabash Bowls

Summary: Patches arighten Broken, season 1 episode 14 Monday, Feb. 28, 2022, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i, and Hawaiian calabash bowls.

Their audiences acclaim the butterfly wing-aping patches on the weak or weakened bowls of Hawaiian and immigrant woodturners. Hard strongness accustomed Hawaiian woodturners of umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls (from Hawaiian ‘umeke, “[calabash-like] bowl”; Old Spanish calabaça via Spanish calabaza via French calebasse, "pumpkin [Cucurbita pepo, "gourd pumpkin"]") to kauila (from Hawaiian ka uila, "the lightning"; Alphitonia ponderosa [“barley-meal massive”] and Colubrina oppositifolia [“snake(-like stamened, stemmed) opposite-leafed)”]”) wood for their patches, be their bowls of kou (Cordia subcordata), milo (Thespesia populnea), hau (Hibiscus tiliaceus) or wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) wood; Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, 15:19:05, image of late 18th-century, kou-wood carved poi bowl ('umeke), gifted 1988 by Mr. and Mrs. Henry B. Patches arighten Broken, season 1 episode 14 debuted Monday, Feb. 18, 2022, on police procedural television series NCIS: Hawai’i, and Hawaiian calabash bowls that assume broken decayed, weak, weakened or wounded wood.
Episode 14 overall, by director Norman Buckley and writers Matt Bosack and Jan Nash, broaches base betrayals among longtime buddies and by those bothered by break-ups. Structural breaks compromise umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls (from Hawaiian ‘umeke, “[calabash-like] bowl”; Old Spanish calabaça via Spanish calabaza via French calebasse, "pumpkin [Cucurbita pepo, "gourd pumpkin"]"). Sharon Doughtie in her article "'Umeke Lā'au: A Rich Hawaiian Tradition” for the October 2017 American Woodturner describes five methods that deal with damaged calabash bowls.
Bishop Museum surveyor Henry Kekahuna (Aug. 6, 1881-April 27, 1969) elaborated six methods in his undated, unpublished paper entitled “The Hawaiian Art of Making Wooden Calabashes.”

The Hawaiian word kauila acknowledges two species in the buckthorn tree family. One kauila acquired the scientific name Alphitonia ponderosa ([“barley-meal[-like fruit] massive”); Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2003, 16:59:36, image of kauila (Alphitonia ponderosa), in habit, Auwahi Forest Restoration Project, East Mau'i: Forest and Kim Starr, CC BY 4.0 International, via Starr Environmental

The first method fixes gourds such as those fashioned by makaainana (from Hawaiian ma ka āina ana, “[non-chiefly, common people] on the land satisfied”) bowl makers.
Alii (from Hawaii ali’i, “chief”) umeke Hawaiian calabash bowl makers generated some coconut-shell (from Hawaiian ‘apu, “coconut-shell [Cocos nucifera, “coconut palm nut-bearing”]”) and ipu gourd bowls. Chiefly woodturners harvested coconut shells and ipu (from Hawaiian ipu, “bottle-gourd” [Lagenaria siceraria, “flask[-shaped fruit] intoxicating drink”]”) gourds less often than kou, milo, hau, wiliwili woods. Five methods improved umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls injured during or after incising kou (Cordia subcordata), milo (Thespesia populnea), hau (Hibiscus tiliaceus) and wiliwili (Erythrina sandwicensis) wood.
Broken on NCIS: Hawai’i and umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls join in jubilating their respective emotional and justice-system patches and huini, kepakepa, kiki, pewa and poho patches.

The Hawaiian word kauila additionally acts as local name for the fellow buckthorn tree member acquiring the scientific name Colubrina oppositifolia (“snake[-like stamened, stemmed] opposite-leafed"); Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012, 17:02, image of cross-section of kauila exhibiting destructiveness of non-native black twig borer (Xylosandrus compactus): David Eickhoff from Pearl City, Hawaii, USA, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

Huini, kepakepa, kiki, pewa and poho methods respectively kindle knowing about sharp point or wood peg, bevel-cut, plug and fishtail repairs and broken- and decayed-wood reinforcements.
Ancient Hawaiian woodturners liked the calabash-bowl wood or another wood such as kauila (Alphitonia ponderosa [“barley-meal massive”] and Colubrina oppositifolia [“snake(-like stamened, stemmed) opposite-leafed)”]” tree species). They sometimes mixed repair methods, such as maintaining broken, weak and weakened wood with not only a rectangular or a square poho but also a huini. They sometimes nestled huini sharp points or wood pegs, often netted from kauila wood no matter the Hawaiian calabash bowl wood, all around each poho reinforcement.
The justice system and the NCIS ohana (from Hawaiian ‘ohana, “family”) offer those broken emotional patches even as umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls obtain optimal hard-wood patches.

Fire and non-native animals and plants act aggressively against the two kauila tree species. Black twig borers (Xyloandrus compactus) additionally act aggressively against the kauila species Alphitonia oppositifolia; Dorsal / Abaxial / Back view of black twig borer (Xylosandrus compactus) (Eichhoff, 1875), image no. 5007016 uploaded Monday, Sep. 25, 2006, to Bugwood.org: Michael C. Ancient woodturners of umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls sometimes presented each end of a pewa crotch or fishtail repair with a huini sharp point or wood peg.
Repair methods such as the huini sharp point or wood peg, the kepakepa bevel cut and the pewa crotch or fishtail qualified most frequently for kauila. The Rhamnaceae (from Greek ῥᾰ́μνος via Latin rhamnus āceae, “thorny bush resembling”) buckthorn family member scientifically rendered as Alphitonia ponderosa reveals beautiful, dense, strong red wood. The other kauila (Colubrina oppositifolia) as Rhamnaceae family, Rosales (“rose”) order, Rosales, Rosid, Eudicot (“embryonic-leafed”), Angiosperm (“containerized-seed”) and Tracheophyte (“windpipe-plant”) clade member supplies brown-red, mahogany-like splendor.
Rose order and rose, seed-leafed, containerized-seed and windpipe-plant clade member-transpired patches transform umeke Hawaiian calabash bowls even as NCIS: Hawai’i justice tends Broken people and things.

The Hawaiian Hall in the Bishop Museum of Honolulu, Oahu island, Hawaii state (from Hawaiian hono lulu, "bay sheltered"; o'ahu, "gathering place"; ha wai 'i, "breath life-force supreme") actualizes the world-biggest collection of Polynesian artifacts generally and Hawaiian artifacts specifically. The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Honolulu Museum of Art admit the respectively second- and third-biggest collections; Thursday, July 2, 2015, 11:59:54, view of three realm-depicting floors of Bishop Museum's Hawaiian Hall, with first floor as Kai Akea (realm of Hawaiian gods, beliefs, legends and pre-contact Hawaii), second floor as Wao Kanaka (realm of life and work, with importance of land and nature in daily life) and third floor as Wao Lani (realm of the gods, with ali'i and Hawaiian history's key moments: Daniel Ramirez from Honolulu, USA, CC BY 2.0 Generic, via Wikimedia Commons

United States Exploring Expedition During the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842 Under the Command of Charles Wilkes, U.S.N. Philadelphia [Pa}: Lea and Blanchard 7: 641. "C. ramulosum, in plano expansum, polypis secundum, ad apice ramiculorum dispositis et sape binis; axe calcareo, levi, pallidè carneo aut albo, crustáque coccineá. "Ramulose, branching in a plane; polyps confined to one surface, mostly placed at the apex of very small branchlets and often in twos: axis calcareous, smooth, pale flesh-red or white, crust scarlet. "Plate 60, fig. 1, zoophyte, natural size. "This species is peculiar in having the branches arranged in a single plane, and the polyps confined to one surface. They open mostly at the extremities of slender calcareous processes. The only specimen seen by the author, was procured at the Sandwich Islands; but it may have been brought by shipping from some other locality. It is five inches high and eight broad, with the stem at base half an inch thick. The crust still remains dried on the axis and the right rays of the closed polyps may be easily distinguished."
