Earth and Space News: Bhojpur Buddhist Monuments Are Like, Unlike Sanchi Buddhist Monuments

The uppermost stage of Bhojpur hill affords Bhojpur Buddhist monuments and Bhojpur village airy views across Raisen District plains to Andher Buddhist monuments eastward and Sanchi Buddhist monuments westward. Bhojpur Buddhist monuments, albeit somewhat less accessible, acclaimed, ancient, appreciated and archived, are like, unlike Sanchi Buddhist monuments just across central plains in central Raisen District, central Madhya Pradesh state, central India.

The first Bhojpur (from Hindi भोज्, “banquet” and पूर, “town”) stupa, like the first Sanchi stupa (from Sanskrit शान्, “calmness” and स्तूप, “heap”), boards no relics. Major General Sir Alexander Cunningham (Jan. 23, 1814-Nov. 28, 1893) considered his excavations of the first Bhojpur stupa not at all complete, because of time constraints. He declared, “complete excavation of this Tope will lead to some important discovery, perhaps more interesting than any that has yet been made” (1854: page 330).

The first Bhojpur stupa, for which Cunningham excavation explanations employ the term tope (from Pali thūpa, “[bell-shaped, relic-holding] heap”), exhibits no embellishments, unlike its Sanchi counterpart.

Itinerant artisans and builders fit the first Bhojpur stupa within a 252-foot- (76.81-meter-) long, 214-foot- (65.23-meter-) broad enclosure on the foremost stage of four stupa-filled stages.

The foremost, topmost stage gets the first ledge of four rocky, step-like, stupa-guarding ledges on the southeast grounds of the southernmost hill of low-lying, low-ranging hills. It has clear views of Andher (from Hindi अंधेर, "chaos") Buddhist monuments eastward across the Raisen (royal residence, from Sanskrit राजन्, “king” and वासिनी, “abiding”) plains. These same Madhya Pradesh (from Sanskrit मध्य, “middle” and प्रदेश, “region”) state plains inspire Bhojpur views seven miles (11.27 kilometers) west-northwestward of the first Sanchi stupa.

Deserted, ruined Bhojpur village still joins the first Bhojpur stupa and five other Bhojpur Buddhist monuments atop Bhojpur hill across Raisen plains from Sanchi Buddhist monuments.

No one knows from Cunningham texts what or who, perhaps villagers, perhaps weather, kindled the “considerable breach” (1854: 329) on the first Bhojpur stupa’s south-facing side.

Six uppermost Bhojpur Buddhist monuments, of 37 major relic-holding monuments, with perhaps another 10 to 20 more, link most directly with any looters from Bhojpur village. The second, third and fourth stages respectively manifest the seventh Bhojpur stupa through the 22nd, the 23rd through the 29th and the 30th through the 37th. Bhojpur village nestles most noticeably amid the six monuments niching highest on Bhojpur hill and numbering from the first Bhojpur stupa through the sixth Bhojpur stupa.

The first Bhojpur stupa, like Sanchi Buddhist monuments and other Bhojpur Buddhist monuments, offers a dry-stone hemisphere without upper surfaces, like the former, unlike the latter.

The stupa hemisphere atop the dome base atop a cylindrical plinth (base, from French plinthe, Latin plinthus, Greek πλίνθος, “brick”) possesses a 66-foot 2-inch (20.17-meter) diameter.

The base- and dome-supporting cylindrical plinth and the stupa terrace respectively quarter a 4-foot (1.22-meter) height and, with a 0.5-foot (0.15-meter) breadth, a 5-foot (1.52-meter) height. The first Bhojpur stupa realizes respective 20-foot 8-inch (6.29-meter) and 24-foot 8-inch (7.11-meter) heights from the cylindrical plinth and the stupa terrace to the dome top. The Cunningham shaft sunk 13 feet (3.96 meters) down the hemisphere center sought, without succeeding in seeing, asthi avashesh (from Sanskrit अस्थि, “bone” and अवशेष, “remainder”).

The first Bhojpur stupa teams with the first Sanchi stupa as Bhojpur Buddhist monuments and Sanchi Buddhist monuments tendering no talismanic, treasured 2,200- to 2,300-plus-year-old relics.

Bhojpur hill allowed ancient artisans, residents and visitors much appreciated views of Sanchi Buddhist monuments westward across Raisen District plains.
