Diet Coke accounts for Cora in swimwear around Becky, Sherry and Yankee players in A Puzzle To Be Named Later, 17th Puzzle Lady mystery by Parnell Hall (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020).

Perhaps Sherry Carter Grant believes in hot food year round for Aunt Cora Felton, daughter Jennifer Carter Grant, husband Aaron Carter and toy poodle Buddy Felton. She cooks a stew cryptically uncharacterized and unclassified even as Connecticut citizens create red-. white- and blue-colored comestibles to celebrate coming (239th?) Fourth of July commemorations. She develops hot, stewed dishes for family dinners around Independence Day, what with drawing together the undescribed ingredients first for lamb stew, then for lamb couscous.

Aaron, Buddy, Jennifer and Sherry never elaborate what they expect to encounter as family-friendly liquid refreshment even as Cora enjoys over-milked, over-sugared coffee from her niece.

Cora frequents Country Kitchen bar and restaurant, Mary Cushman’s Bake Shop and Starbucks for caffeinated consumption away from the Felton ranch house with its Carter/Grant addition.

The Cushman groupie gets cappuccino (from Italian cappuccino, “red-brown [Capuchin monk hoodlet]”) with corn muffin one day, latte (from Latin lac, via Italian latte, “milk”) another. Cora, who hates iced tea, has cappuccino with emotional therapist Amanda Hoyt, who harbors no coffee and no frappuccino (from French frappé, “milkshake” and Italian cappuccino). Jackie, wife of minor league baseball star pitcher and subsequent Yankee starting pitcher Matt Greystone, invites Cora to hot tea, indubitably over-creamed, over-milked, over-sugared and over-sweetened.

Diet Coke and judicious caffeine jostle 10 pounds off her 10- to 20-pound overweight frame so that Cora journeys in swimwear to the Greystone pool party.

Cora keeps her order at Diet Coke even as Country Kitchen kindles midmorning beer-drinking by Bakerhaven acquaintances and gin and tonic-drinking by Matt’s manager, Lenny Schick.

Jackie learns, as Lenny learned, that Cora likes iced tea and soda less than liquor, that Cora likes iced tea and lemonade less than frozen margarita. Cora makes up her mind for a virgin frozen margarita rather than cold lemonade even as she then makes no moves to match Matt’s coffee-drinking marathon. Cora needs Diet Coke with a lemon slice, not just naked Diet Coke, after nestling into a nice conversation with Derek Jeter regarding her sudoku books.

Diet Coke perhaps offers Cora optimum opportunities for obtaining normal levels of blood alcohol and other occasions for observing herself another 10 pounds lighter in swimwear.

The proximitous presence of attorney Becky Baldwin’s law office to a pizza parlor previously proved problematic for Cora planning cigarette- and drink-free private and professional projects.

Cora never quits Baldwin law office for pepper and sausage pizza-scented alleyways below even as Matt and best friend forever Don Upton quest quintessential Bakerhaven pizza. Bakerhaven Police Chief Dale Harper, with wife Ellen pounds heavier from Cushman cranberry scones, relishes perhaps gin and tonic, perhaps Sprite at the Greystone poolside barbecue. New York Police Department Sergeant Crowley similarizes Dale in seeking stress-relieving alcohol, albeit straight up, since he sleeps soundest after three shots of Jack Daniel bourbon.

Curry puffs from the Thai eatery and virgin frozen margaritas tempt Cora even as Diet Coke turns her swimwear-thin in A Puzzle To Be Named Later.
