All but one among Bakerhavenites and New Yorkers admire Yankee baseball in A Puzzle To Be Named Later, 17th mystery in author Parnell Hall’s (Oct. 31, 1934-Dec. 15, 2020) Puzzle Lady series.

Don Upton behaves as best friend forever of minor league co-star and road roommate Matt Greystone, who becomes a Yankee starting pitcher before breaking his arm. No Yankee executive or player considers Don, who as a married man courted Jackie until the latter chose Matt, competent and competitive for the major leagues. Lenny Schick, Jackie’s and Matt’s best friend forever and Matt’s one and only manager ever, does whatever directs Matt from rehabilitative leave back into active pitching.

Jackie and Matt engage Cora, as sudoku number puzzle lady and Manhattan emigrant, to ease their establishment in Bakerhaven society by examining their pool-party guest list.

The guest list features Bakerhaven First Selectman Iris Cooper and, without wife Ellen or Police Officers Sam Brogan and Dan Finley, Bakerhaven Police Chief Dale Harper.

Ellen, crossword puzzle constructor Harvey Beerbaum, licensed emotional therapist Amanda Hoyt and Judy Douglas Knauer, Knauer Realty realtor who gains Matt as purchase-option renter, get in. The guest list held and the invitations honored by Yankee batboy Danny had attorney Becky Baldwin and, without his wife Judy, medical examiner Dr. Barney Nathan. Perhaps Mary Cushman is not invited because Cushman’s Bake Shop imports Manhattan-baked items from Silver Moon Bakery and implies their inventory as Cushman-baked with Cushman-brewed coffees.

Perhaps all but one of those jubilating, and those not jubilating, Matt rehabilitatively journeying to south Bakerhaven join New Yorkers in judging Yankee baseball most admiringly.

No reader of A Puzzle To Be Named Later knows whether Cora kept Kelly’s Antiques off the guest list or, if she kept them off, why.

Cora leaves out Rick Reed, respective host and reporter for Bakerhaven television Channel 8 news and for Rick’s Rips one-minute segments, as not labelably Bakerhaven-born, Bakerhaven-bred. Perhaps Ben, bartender at Country Kitchen bar, musters too many memories of Cora during her non-sober years to merit mention on Felton lists or Greystone invitations. His car hitting head-on an unspecified tree in upstate New York April 2 necessitated Matt needing Donnie, Bill’s Body Shop mechanic, in Rye, off Route 287.

Hank Farley, as owner-operator of Hank Farley’s Mobil station, perhaps, perhaps not, observed all but one observer obsessed with Yankee baseball at the Greystone festive occasion.

The second single-car accident, this time with Lenny surviving a side-winding S-turn sometime after July 4 (2016?), put the Greystone car in the Farley service station.

No Bakerhavenites and no New Yorkers quip about any other Bakerhavenites or, except for Leon Bratz, any other New Yorkers quoting anything negative against Yankee baseball. New York Police Department Sergeant Crowley, his girlfriend Stephanie and his Police Officer Perkins, as New York residents, never rate guest-list reservations or special Stadium seats. Cora seeks neither field-level Sunday-afternoon seats nor special invitations for Crowley, Perkins, Stephanie or grand-niece Jennifer Carter Grant’s friend, Suzie Bromowitz, or school teacher, Miss Finsterwald.

All but one of those thronging, ironically perhaps all those not thronging, the Greystone pool party in A Puzzle To Be Named Later, treasure Yankee baseball.
