Friday, Nov. 19, Partial Lunar Eclipse Belongs to Saros Cycle 126

Summary: The Friday, Nov. 19, partial lunar eclipse belongs to Saros cycle 126, a series of 70 similar lunar eclipses.

The Friday, Nov. 19, partial lunar eclipse belongs to Saros cycle 126, which comprises 70 similar lunar eclipses.
The Saros cycle brings together eclipses with such similar geometries as occurrence at the same lunar node. The lunar orbit's two nodes represent the points of intersection of the moon's orbit with Earth's orbit. The Saros cycle groups similar eclipses into families, known as series.
All lunar eclipses in lunar Saros cycle 126 associate with the moon's ascending node. Each eclipse in Saros cycle 126's 70-member lineup exhibits southward movement from the ascending node.
A Saros cycle lasts for approximately 6,585.3 days (18 years 11 days 8 hours). Specifically, Saros cycle 126 has a duration of 1,244.08 years. Saros cycle 126 spans 13 centuries, from the 13th to the 25th centuries.
Saros cycle 126's first eclipse dates to July 18, 1228, which appeared as a penumbral eclipse near the penumbra's northern edge. The cycle's 70th and last eclipse will occur Aug. 19, 2472. This penumbral eclipse will be placed near the penumbra's southern edge.
The 70 lunar eclipses in the Saros 126 lineup present a sequencing of five sets. The opening set contains 22 penumbral lunar eclipses. The cycle's second set is composed of eight partial lunar eclipses. The third set features 14 total lunar eclipses. The fourth set, which occurs as the cycle's second round of partial lunar eclipses, contains 19 members. The fifth and last set numbers as the cycle's second and last round of penumbral lunar eclipses and comprises seven penumbral eclipses.
Penumbral lunar eclipses qualify as the most frequent type of eclipse in Saros cycle 126. The opening and closing sets of 22 penumbral eclipses and seven penumbral eclipses, respectively, contribute a total of 29 penumbral eclipses to Saros cycle 126's overall lineup. Partial lunar eclipses are credited as the second most frequently occurring eclipse type. The subtotals of eight and 19 for the cycle's two sets of partial lunar eclipses amount to a combined tally of 27.
The Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, partial lunar eclipse appears as 45th in the Saros 126 cycle's 70-member lineup. November's partial lunar eclipse numbers as the first eclipse in the cycle's second set of partial lunar eclipses.
As the opening eclipse in Saros 126 cycle's second set of partial lunar eclipses, the November 2021 partial lunar eclipse was preceded by the total lunar eclipse of Sunday, Nov. 9, 2003. The November 2003 total lunar eclipse numbered as the 14th and last of Saros 126 cycle's only set of total lunar eclipses. As the set's closing eclipse, the November 2003 total lunar eclipsed numbered as 44th in the Saros 126 cycle's 70-member lineup.
The Saros 126 cycle successor of the Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, partial lunar eclipse will be a partial lunar eclipse on Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2039. The November 2039 partial lunar eclipse numbers as the second eclipse in Saros 126 cycle's second set of partial lunar eclipses and as the 46th eclipse in the Saros 126 cycle's 70-member lineup.
The Saros 126 cycle's second set of partial lunar eclipses will close Wednesday, June 5, 2346. The set's closing eclipse numbers as 19th and last in the set and as 63rd in the Saros 126 cycle's 70-member lineup.
The eclipse predictions by now-retired NASA astrophysicist Fred Espenak and Belgian mathematical astronomer Jean Meeus on NASA’s Eclipse Web Site recognize the Friday, Nov. 19, 2021, partial lunar eclipse, with a duration of 3 hours 28 minutes 23 seconds, as the longest partial lunar eclipse in Saros cycle 126.
The partial lunar eclipse of Wednesday, June 5, 2346, which closes the cycle's second set of partial lunar eclipses, with a duration of 34 minutes 22 seconds, is ranked as the shortest partial lunar eclipse in Saros cycle 126. The June 2346 partial lunar eclipse will have a brief duration of only 34 minutes 22 seconds.
The takeaways for the Friday, Nov. 19, partial lunar eclipse's belonging to Saros cycle 126 are that the eclipse occurs as 45th in the cycle's 70-member lineup; that the November 2021 partial lunar eclipse opens the cycle's second set of partial lunar eclipses; and that the November 2021 partial lunar eclipse qualifies as the longest of the cycle's 27 partial lunar eclipses.

A penumbral eclipse on Friday, Aug. 19, 2472, will close Saros cycle 126 as the cycle's 70th and last member: "Permission is freely granted to reproduce this data when accompanied by an acknowledgment: Eclipse Predictions by Fred Espenak (NASA's GSFC)," via NASA Eclipse Web Site
