Summary: Unknown ashes, perhaps known as bone relics in same-area Sanchi Buddhist monuments, are at Andher Buddhist monuments in Madhya Pradesh, central India.
Unknown ashes perhaps known as inscribed, same-age, 2,200-plus-year-old bone relics in Sanchi Buddhist monuments are at Andher Buddhist monuments, as both areas are in central Raisen District, central Madhya Pradesh, central India.
Sanchi (from Sanskrit शान्, “calmness”) Stupa (relic-holder, from Sanskrit स्तूप, “heap”) No. 2 bore the blessed, burnt bone relics of 10 Buddhists (from Sanskrit बुद्ध, “awakened”). Andher (from Hindi अंधेर, “chaos”) Stupa No. 2 and Andher Stupa No. 3 conserved consecrated asthi avashesh (bone relics, from Sanskrit अस्थि, “bone” and अवशेष, “remainder”). Buddhist sangha (from Sanskrit संघ, “multitude”) members deposited cremated Haritiputra and Maudgalaputra in Sanchi Stupa No. 2 and respectively in Andher relic-holders Nos. 2 and 3.
Andher Stupa No. 2 also enshrined the esteemed bone relics of Kakanava Prabhasana, whom Sanchi Stupa No. 2 extolled for its entombed relics of Vachi Suvijayata.
Major General Sir Alexander Cunningham (Jan. 23, 1814-Nov. 28, 1893) found “black ashes and something like calcined nut-shells” (1854: page 345) in Andher Stupa No. 1.
The 5-1/8-inch (13.02-centimeter-) high, round, stone relic-holder with 6-5/8-inch (16.83-centimeter) broad bottom and 5.5-inch (13.97-centimeter) broad top within the first stupa’s first chamber guarded nothing else. That first, 10-inch- (25.4-centimeter-) square chamber with one 18-inch- (45.72-centimeter-) high side opposite one 10-inch- (24.4-centimeter-) high side hunkers 3 feet (0.92 meters) above a second. A 10-inch (25.4-centimeter) diameter red earthenware vessel atop an 8.5-inch (21.59-centimeter) diameter red earthenware inhabited the second chamber down the hemisphere center of that first stupa.
Perhaps sangha members journeyed with known ashes at Sanchi Buddhist monuments to join them, enigmatically, inconsistently as unknown ashes, to known ashes at Andher Buddhist monuments.
The second red earthenware Andher vessel kept in its interior a black, 3.25-inch- (8.26-centimeter-) high, 7-inch (17.78-centimeter) diameter earthenware bowl with a lidded black earthenware vase.
That 4-1/8-inch- (10.48-centimeter-) high, 5-inch (12.7-centimeter) diameter vase, like the black earthenware bowl and like the two red earthenware vessels, lodged no inscriptions inside or outside. Not one relic-holder, of which someone, something moved the first-mentioned “mouth downwards” (1854: 345), in the lower chamber, unlike the sole upper-chamber relic-holder, manifested any material. The Cunningham narrative noted Sonari (Suvarnari, from Sanskrit सुवर्ण, "golden" and अरि, “wheel”) No. 2 niching four bone-relic sets also nestled into Sanchi Stupa No. 2.
Perhaps sangha members offered known Alabagira, Kasyapa Gotra, Kaushikiputra and Madhyama ashes in Sonari and Sanchi Buddhist monuments mysteriously as unknown ashes at Andher Buddhist monuments.
Sanchi Stupa No. 2 preserved bone relics from cremated Gotiputra, Kaundinyaputra and Maha Vanaya, whose ashes no one placed as known parts of Buddhist monuments elsewhere.
Gotiputra and Kaundinyaputra, brothers and perhaps descendants of Gautama (from Sanskrit गौतम, “darkness[-dispelling] light”) Buddha’s (624 BCE?-544 BCE?) first disciple, Kaundinyaputra, qualify as known Buddhist questers. Maha Vanaya remains an unknown Buddhist whose relics resided with the respected ashes of Buddhist Church head Maudgalaputra and Buddhist teachers Kasyapa Gotra and Vachi Suvijayata. An Andher first-stupa pillar shows figures “seated in a circle, each on a small square couch” (1854: 344) and suggests the Third Buddhist Council Maudgalaputra served.
The Cunningham text teamed 10 talismans, as known ashes in Sanchi Buddhist monuments, perhaps as unknown ashes in Andher Buddhist monuments, with the council-triggered Himalayan mission.

Upper relic chamber in Andher Stupa No. 1 sheltered a "round stone box" and "contained nothing save a small quantity of black ashes and something like calcined nut-shells" while lower relic chamber contained "a hemispherical red earthenware vessel . . . turned with the mouth downwards. Beneath this was a second vessel of red earthenware . . . containing a black earthenware bowl . . . Lastly, inside the bowl there was a black earthenware vase . . . with a small lid of the same material. This vase was empty" (Cunningham, 1854: 345); Brev.-Major Alexander Cunningham, The Bhilsa Topes (1854), Plate XXVIII: No visible notice of copyright per uploader judec on April 17, 2008, via Internet Archive @ https://archive.org/details/bhilsatopesorbud00cunn/page/n416/mode/1up; Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons @ https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andher_stupa_and_relics.jpg
