Unknown Ashes Maybe Known to Sanchi Buddhist Monuments Are at Bhojpur

Summary: Unknown ashes, maybe as inscribed, known 2,200-plus-year-old bone relics in Sanchi Buddhist monuments in central India are in same-age, same-area Bhojpur.

Unknown ashes, maybe as inscribed, known, 2,200-plus-year-old bone relics in Sanchi Buddhist monuments in central Raisen District, central Madhya Pradesh, central India are in same-age, same-area Bhojpur 7 miles (11.27 kilometers) east-southeastward.

Bhojpur (from Sanskrit भोज्, “banquet” and पूर, “town”) Stupa (from Sanskrit स्तूप, “[relic-holding] heap, mound, pile”) No. 2 bore two burned bone relics from blessed Buddhists. Its contents conserved no inscriptions anywhere in its relic-chamber concerning its two containers with consecrated asthi avashesh (bone relics, from Sanskrit अस्थि, “bone” and अवशेष, “remainder”). Its display of seven dear objects defers to community members of the Buddhist sangha (from Sanskrit बुद्ध, “awakened” and संघ, “multitude”) depositing precious metals and stones.

Sanchi (from Sanskrit शान्ति, “calmness, peace, quietism”) sangha members, like Buddhist community members elsewhere, employed such expensive, exquisite elaborations as seven precious effects to emphasize esteem.

Major General Sir Alexander Cunningham (Jan. 23, 1814-Nov. 28, 1893) found seven precious furnishings for favored relics from a foremost Buddhist in Sanchi Stupa No. 3.

The Cunningham guidebook gave among third-stupa gems “1st, a flat piece of pearl; 2nd, 3rd, two small seed pearls; 4th, a garnet bead” (1854: page 299). The honorary hoard of “'seven precious things’" (1854: 297) heralded herding “the holiest relics; as with the skull of Buddha at Hilo near Jalálábád” (1854: 298). Third-stupa itemizations in the Cunningham inventory included “5th, a star-shaped bead of lapis-lazuli; 6th, a crystal bead; 7th, an oblong bead of pale amethyst” (1854: 299).

Perhaps sangha members journeyed to Bhojpur from Sanchi Buddhist monuments with known ashes, subsequently judged as unknown ashes jeopardized by “the lapse of ages” since then.

Bhojpur Stupa No. 2 kept 9-inch- (22.86-centimeter-) high, 16-inch (40.64-centimeter) diameter red earthenware as “a hemispherical cover” within its 1.5-foot (0.46-meter) square, 1.25-foot- (0.38-meter-) deep relic-chamber.

An 8.25-inch (20.96-centimeter) diameter, 6-inch- (15.24-centimeter-) high earthenware box, with illegible inked inscriptions on its peeling, thick-coated, white-washed lid exterior, lay beneath the red earthenware cover. It mixed “several small pieces of bone” (1854: 331) and “4 thin, round bits of gold, weighing altogether only a few grains,” as preciousest, sole metal. It niched “1 bead of garnet, or Badakshani ruby, 1 crystal bead, 2 beads of pale greenish crystal, and some minute fragments of pearl” (1854: 332).

Obscured orthography obstructed observing the only occupant of Bhojpur Stupa No. 2 as known ashes, perhaps from Sanchi Buddhist monuments and thereby offered unknown ashes instead.

The earthenware box preserved more “minute pieces of bone” on the relic-chamber bottom to a shaft perpendicularly down from the hemispherical dome to a stupa-style relic-casket.

The crystal relic-casket qualified as quintessential stupa, despite its pinnacle-stoppered top, with “terrace, plinth, hemispherical dome, square pedestal, and double chatta pinnacle, all complete” (1851: 331). The relic-holding chamber of Sanchi Stupa No. 3 reunited revered relics from foremost Buddhist disciple Shariputra, reverenced with seven precious stones, and from second-most disciple Maudgalyayana. Satdhara Stupa No. 2 similarly sheltered, short seven precious stones, sacred relics of Gautama (from Sanskrit गौतम, “light [dispels] darkness”) Buddha’s (624 BCE?-544 BCE?) significantest disciples.
