Stationary Rope Systems (SRS) annul friction by anchored ascents and altered redirects of climbing lines, according to the article Stationary Rope System Climbing, Part 2 in Arborist News magazine for April 2021.

Alex Julius and Sharon Lilly broach Moving Rope Systems (MRS) single-borne at friction hitches, fully force- and friction-bearing at tie-in points, shared force-balanced between rope legs. Canopy characteristics, tie-in points and work objectives conduce to choosing SRS connected at one end to base or canopy anchors and coursing through one-plus branch unions. MRS climbing lines deploy full climber weight to tie-ins and half to each leg even as basal-anchored SRS double climber-weight loads at primary suspension points (PSP).

All loads even and one leg ends up employable when SRS climbers effectuate multiple, retrievable climbing-line path, force and direction redirects between them and basal anchors.

SRS climbers favor fashioning their basal anchor after their PSP, whose branch-union breaking strength species health and structure foil or fortify and whose relocation frustrates them.

Isolated branch unions, unlike PSP and ground-generated basal anchors, mandatorily guide ground-generated canopy anchors, whose lines go over lateral and around main-stem parts before getting cinched. It helps having an in-line loop, as alpine butterfly or running bowline knot, handle climbing-line tails heading through it and harvesting visual inspections from branch-union undersides. MRS climbing involves body-thrusting, muscle-fatiguing ascents whose handful implementation, unlike hand-free SRS ascents, inspires inefficient slowness as MRS climbers itinerate upward to the in-tree work zone.

SRS climbing, judged ergonomic in chest-harnessed upright body positioning, jeopardizes no body-thrusting arm, hand, trunk muscles and journeys up and down by foot-lockable, rope-walkable leg muscles.

SRS ascents sometimes keep ascent lines as access lines when tree work kindles MRS climbing and mechanical friction devices, never cammed ascenders, as ascenders and work-positioners.

Rope-system anchoring, ascending, climbing and descending launch the latest approved-use, industry-standard equipment and systems if compatible and configurable with in-use counterparts and learnable from user manuals. No rope moves at the PSP or through the friction-saving device or hitch even as no more than one rope leg maintains SRS climbers and climbing. Devices such as cordage and hardware redirects, and techniques such as branch-union redirects, of climbing-line paths, forces and directions net less SRS and more MRS friction.

SRS climbers opt for multiple redirects, which occasion no increased friction, oftener than MRS climbers, for whom increased, multiple-redirect friction obstructs energy conservation and rope strength.

SRS branch-union, cordage and hardware redirects prompt flatter, safer rope angles and greater energy-saving climber stability even as they potentially provoke bendable, breakable branches and PSP.

MRS climbing quickens safe limb-walking returns by queuing friction from moving through branch unions and friction hitches into climbing-line slack pulled through hitches or hitch-tending pulleys. Safe returns require rigging, before limb-walking, fixed mechanical-advantage attachment points as ascender-, butterfly- or Prusik-looped, micropulleyed, rope tail-feedable carabiners between SRS climbers and last suspension points. MRS safety principles stimulate SRS climbers securing three-pointed contact with tree surfaces when lanyarding in for making cuts and seeking secure rope angles under 45 degrees.

SRS climbers, like their MRS counterparts, terminate their last task before trekking down tree trunks once they test whether climbing-line rope tails truly touch the ground.
