Ilio Hawaiian poi dogs antedate service dogs on Magnum’s Dark Harvest crime action drama television series episode April 2, 2021, by acting as ancient guardians of Hawaiian children and of Hawaiian culture.
Third-season 12th-episode director Rubba Nada and writer Gene Hong bewilder Thomas Magnum (Jay Hernandez) with a burgled SUV (sport utility vehicle) with service dog as passenger. The rebooted series’ 52nd episode overall channels concerns communicated in Season One’s ninth episode, The Ties That Bind, Nov. 19, 2018, in considering a checkmated abduction. It likewise defers to Hawaii Five-0 Season Eight’s third episode, Na La ‘Ilio: Dog Days, Oct. 13, 2017, about police dog Eddie McGarrett (Eddie Aikau Chipperton).
The Hawaiian islands anciently entertained no domesticable mammals before emigrant navigators from Polynesian islands embarked in canoes eastward with their edible chickens, dogs, hogs and rats.

Liliʻuokalani (Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Wewehi Kamakaʻeha; Sep. 2, 1838-Nov. 11, 1917), last sovereign monarch (Jan. 29, 1891-Jan. 17, 1893) of the Kingdom of Hawai'i, in 1917 full-length photographic portrait with Poni ("Coronation"), her poi dog, on the verandah of Washington Place, which became Lili'uokalani's private residence with her Tuesday, Sep. 16, 1862, marriage to John Owen Dominis (March 10, 1832-Aug. 23, 1891), son of American merchant Captain John Dominis (1796-1846), who had his home constructed between 1844 and 1847; Poni maintained a vigil at the foot of Lili'uokalani's bed until her death ("No Hope for Her Majesty Says Doctor," Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Saturday, Nov. 10, 1917, page one; via Library of Congress @ https://www.loc.gov/resource/sn82014682/1917-11-10/ed-1/?sp=1&st=image); according to Lili'ukalani's expressed wish, Poni was gifted to Lahilahi Webb (Elizabeth Kealiioiwikinolahilahi Napuaikaumakani Rogers Webb; April 12, 1862-Jan. 2, 1949), Lili'ukalani's last lady-in-waiting, 1914 to 1917: Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Asian and European settlement of the Hawaiian archipelago felled Hawaiian descendants of Polynesian dogs as distinct breeds by favoring American, East Asian and European canine imports.
Cultural traditions, dog-tooth jewelry, European illustrated and written records, extant feral dogs and petroglyph carvings guide gathering physical composites of extinct dogs gauged as cultural guardians. Cultural traditions honor canine Hawaiians as crooked- and short-legged, long-backed, prickly-eared predators with garbage and gourmet appetites, prey for human mealtimes and protectors of Hawaiian children. They invoke hog-habitat itinerants with big, flat, fox-like heads; chubby legs; curly, short-haired coats; low-lying, pot-bellied, soft, stout bodies; non-barking howls; and weak jaws and teeth.
Ancient Hawaiian culture joined canine teeth from ilio Hawaiian poi dogs into such dog-tooth jewelry as charm necklaces for children and leg bracelets for hula-dancing males.

Each newborn kept one Hawaiian dog, also known as Hawaiian islander and native Hawaiian dog commonly, as aumakua (‘aumakua, from Hawaiian ‘au, “group” and makua, “parent”).
Group parents left life as brown, cream, gray or red-coated, strong-willed, 13- to 16.5-inch- (33.02- to 40.64-centimeter-) high, 15- to 35-pound (6.90- to 15.88-kilogram), waddling-gaited two-year-olds. They maintained postmortem (from Latin post, “after” and mortem, “death”) spiritual guardianship as lamb-like, pork-like meat mellowed by lifetime meals of breadfruit, poi and sweet potato. They perhaps netted their most accurate, almond-eyed, crooked-legged, pointed-eared representations in Puako (from Hawaiian puakō, “kou tree flower, sugarcane tassel”) Petroglyph Park petroglyphs of Waimea, Hawai’i.
Louis Choris (March 22, 1795-March 22, 1828), as Lieutenant Otto von Kotzebue (Dec. 31, 1787-Feb. 15, 1846) expedition artist, observed ilio Hawaiian poi dogs around 1816-1817.

An early 19th-century Hawaiian scene shows two dogs, with the larger (left; foreground) appearing "foreign" and atypically large-sized and floppy-eared, and the smaller (center) more nearly corresponding to the Hawaiian dog's "customary description," as described by American anthropologist Katharine Luomala (Sept. 10, 1907-Feb. 27, 1992); ca. 1820 sketch by German-Russian explorer and painter Louis Choris (March 22, 1795-March 22, 1828), previously unpublished and owned by Honolulu Academy of Arts (Bishop Museum Negative 20599); Pacific Science, vol. XIV (July 1969), pages 195, 197, 208 (figure 13): Public Domain, via Wikimedia Commons

Mauna Loa (from Hawaiian mauna, “mountain” and loa, “long”) Observatory photographs of a fleet-footed, garbage-eating phantom feral dog prompted a three-generation, 12-year-long, 19-dog back-breeding program (1967-1979?).
Hoku (from Hawaiian hōkū, “star”) queued up among Polynesian Voyaging Society crew of the double-hulled voyaging canoe Hokulea (Arcturus, from Hawaiian hōkū, “star” and le’a, “gladness”). Honolulu Zoo programming under Director (1965-1979) Jack Throp (Aug. 25, 1926-July 17, 2011) required feral dogs retaining native ilio (from Hawaiian ‘ilio, “dog”) behaviors and physiques. The back-bred female Hoku survived bicentennial-year sojourns from Hawai’i to Tahiti (May 15, 1976-June 4, 1976), and from Tahiti to Hawai’i (July 5, 1976-July 26, 1976).
‘Ilio Hawaiian poi dogs (from Hawaiian po’oi, “pounded [taro-root paste]”) tended children custodially and two-plus-year-olds talismanically, even as service dogs tend today’s emotionally, mentally, physically troubled.
