Samson et Dalila is the March 23, 2019, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing as the 17th of 24 scheduled Saturday matinee radio broadcasts during the 2018-2019 Met Opera season.
French Romantic Era composer Camille Saint-Saëns (Oct. 9, 1835-Dec. 16, 1921) set his musical score for Samson et Dalila to a French libretto by French librettist Ferdinand Lemaire (1832-Aug. 10, 1879). The inspiration for Lemaire’s libretto is the Biblical tale of Samson and Delilah in the sixteenth chapter of the Book of Judges in the Old Testament.
Samson et Dalila premiered Dec. 2, 1877, at the Grand Ducal Theatre (Grossherzogliches Hoftheater) in Weimar, Thuringia, east central Germany. The premiere was performed in German, with a libretto translated from Lemaire’s French original into German by German composer and music critic Richard Pohl (Sept. 12, 1826-Dec. 17, 1896).
Samson et Dalila’s Metropolitan Opera premiere happened Feb. 8, 1895. The Me notes that the premiere was “probably in French” even though the singers were Italian, with the exception of French operatic bass Pol Plançon (June 12, 1851-Aug. 11, 1914). Pol Plançon performed as Abimélech and the Old Hebrew.

The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s performances of Samson et Dalila debut new staging by Darko Tresnjak. The Serbian-American theater director’s production team comprises Alexander Dodge, set designer; Linda Cho, costume designer; Donald Holder, lighting designer; and Austin McCormick, choreographer.
The takeaways for Camille Saint-Saëns’ Samson et Dalila as the March 23, 2019, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast are that the Biblical opera of seduction versus strength airs as one of the season’s four new productions and as the 17th of the 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s 24 scheduled Saturday matinee radio broadcasts.
