Director Roderick Davis and writer Zoe Robyn build Season 9's 12th episode A Bruise Inflicted on an Innocent Person Vanishes Quickly around an 'ōlelo a'o ("advice"). The series' 205th episode overall considers the life-threatening condition of Grace Williams (Teilor Grubbs), the Hawaii Five-0 2010 Task Force family's most bruised, most innocent member. Rachel Hollander (Claire van der Boom) and ex-husband Danny Williams (Scott Caan) defer to hospital-dispensed modern Western medicine, not traditional Hawaiian health care, for their daughter.

Traditional Hawaiian medicine evolved around kahuna la'au lapa'au (general practitioners) and specialists as kahuna haihai iwi (orthopedists), kahuna lomilomi (masseurs, physical therapists) and kahuna paaopao (pediatricians).

Traditional Hawaiian medical practitioners, especially the kahuna la'au lapa'au and kahuna haihai iwi, favored fresh kukui tree leaves as traditional Hawaiian bruise remedies and swelling treatments.

The Euphorbiaceae (from Greek εύφορβος, eúphorbos, "well-fed") spurge family member grows from fleshy, oily kernels with an interior, thin embryo within a protein- and starch-rich endosperm. The white kernels hide, under secondary, thin-layered seed coats, within round, 1.58- to 2.36-inch (4- to 6-centimeter) diameter kikui tree nuts, often hailed as night-lighting candlenuts. Raw nuts impart phorbol and saponin toxins even though traditional Pacific and southeast Asian cuisines intermingle baked, cooked, fried, grilled, roasted fish, nuts, rice and vegetables.

Brown-green drupes, as apple-shaped, fleshy- to leathery-husked, one- to two-seeded, stone fruits, juggle the black, elliptical, hard, rough-shelled 0.98- to 1.38-inch- (2.5- to 3.5-centimeter-) long nuts.

Berry-like 1.97- to 2.36-inch (5- to 6-centimeter-) long, 1.97 to 2.76-inch- (5- to 7-centimeter-) wide fruits often keep company with kikui tree female and male flowers.

Monoecious (from Greek μόνος, mónos, "sole" and οἰκία, oikía, "house") kikui trees locate female- and male-flowering, fragrant, green-white 4- to 9-inch- (10- to 22.86-centimeter-) long panicles. All kikui tree flowers individually manifest circular, white corollas (from Latin corōlla, "small chaplet, garland, wreath") with five creamy- to dingy-white, non-fused, 0.51-inch- (1.3-centimeter-) long petals. Kikui trees, named Aleurites moluccana (from Greek ἄλευρον, áleuron, "flour" and Latin moluccāna, "Moluccan [Indonesian]"), net 3.94- to 7.87-inch- (10- to 20-centimeter-) long, silver-green, tip-pointed foliage.

Kikui trees, observed by Carl Linnaeus (May 23, 1707-Jan. 10, 1778) and Carl Willdenow (Aug. 22, 1765-July 10, 1812), offer three- to seven-lobed, tooth-edged, white-dusted foliage.

Alternate-positioned kikui tree leaves, plucked as traditional Hawaiian bruise remedies, present hairy, heart-, oblong- or triangle-shaped, simple, wave-edged surfaces; rusty undersides; sweet-sapped stems; two basal glands.

Kikui trees queue up 2.74- to 4.57-foot (9- to 15-meter) trunk diameters; 10- to 90-plus-foot (3.05- to 27.43-plus-meter) heights; 15- to 40-plus-foot (4.57- to 12.19-plus-meter) canopies. They require mean annual temperatures between 66 and 81 degrees Fahrenheit (19 and 27 degrees Celsius) and 25.19- to 168.89-inch (640- to 4,290-millimeter) mean annual rainfall. Sunny, well-drained soil pHs 5 to 8 through 701.04-foot (2,300-meter) altitudes above sea level support black-gray, drought-, salt-, soil-, wind-tolerant, smooth-barked, subtropical and tropical kikui trees.

Perhaps Danny, Grace and Rachel treat less serious contusions and non-life-threatening health threats at home with such traditional Hawaiian bruise remedies as fresh kikui tree leaves.
