Claude Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande is the Jan. 19, 2019, Met Opera Saturday matinee broadcast, airing as the eighth of 24 scheduled Saturday matinee radio broadcasts during the 2018-2019 Met Opera season.
French Impressionist composer Achille-Claude Debussy (Aug. 22, 1862-March 25, 1918) set his musical score for Adriana Lecouvreur to a French libretto by Belgian playwright and writer Maurice Maeterlinck (Aug. 29, 1862-May 6, 1949). Maeterlinck’s literary source was his same-named, five-act, Symbolist play, which was published in a first version in Brussels, Belgium, by Paul Lacomblez in 1892.
Maeterlinck’s play premiered May 17, 1893, at Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens in Paris, France. Founded in 1855 by German-born French composer Jacques Offenbach (June 20, 1819-Oct. 5, 1880), the Parisian theatre is sited on the Seine’s right bank (rive droite) in the 2nd arrondissement (2e arrondissement de Paris) at 4 rue Monsigny.
Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande premiered April 30, 1902, at Opéra-Comique in Paris, France. The premiere took place in the Parisian opera company’s Salle Favart, the third of three buildings located at the current site, 1 Place Boïeldieu, in the 2nd arrondissement (2e arrondissement de Paris).
The Metropolitan Opera premiere of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande took place March 21, 1925. Canadian operatic tenor Edward Johnson (Aug. 22, 1878-April 20, 1959) sang the title role of Pelléas. Spanish lyric soprano Lucrezia Bori (Dec. 24, 1887-May 14, 1960) sang the title role of Mélisande. Russian-born French artist and designer Romain de Tirtoff (Nov. 23, 1892-April 21, 1990), known as Erté, was costume designer for Lucrezia Bori’s Mélisande. Austrian American costume designer Gretel Urban (Jan. 7, 1898-Dec. 6, 1997) designed costumes for Edward Johnson and the rest of the cast.

During the 2018-2019 Met Opera season, Maestro Nézet-Séguin also conducts Dialogues des Carmélites by French composer and pianist Francis Poulenc (Jan. 7, 1899-Jan. 30, 1963) and La Traviata by 19th century opera composer Giuseppe Verdi (Oct. 10, 1813-Jan. 27, 1901).
Maestro Nézet-Séguin shares conductorship with Derrick Inouye, who conducts closing night’s performance, Jan. 31. The Vancouver, British Columbia-born conductor’s Metropolitan Opera debut happened Dec. 18, 2003, in the opera house’s fifth performance of Benvenuto Cellini by French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz (Dec. 11, 1803-March 8, 1869).

The American operatic tenor’s Metropolitan Opera debut happened May 7, 2011, as Brighella in the opera house’s 89th performance of Ariadne auf Naxos by German late Romantic and early modern composer Richard Strauss (June 11, 1864-Sept. 8, 1949). In the 2018-2019 Met Opera season, Paul Appleby also appears as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni by Classical Era composer Wolfgang Mozart (Jan. 27, 1756-Dec. 5, 1791).
Kyle Ketelsen appears in all performances as Prince Golaud, whose unrequited love for Mélisande impels him to kill his brother and rival, Prince Pelléas.  The American bass-baritone’s Metropolitan Opera debut happened April 22, 2006, as Angelotti in the opera house’s 874th performance of Tosca by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (Dec. 22, 1858-Nov. 29, 1924). The 2018-2019 Met Opera season’s performances of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande revive Sir Jonathan Miller’s production. The Metropolitan Opera debut of Sir Miller’s new production of Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande took place March 23, 1995, in the opera house’s 91st performance of Debussy’s doomed love- and fratricide-themed opera. Sir Miller’s production team comprises Clare Mitchell, costume designer; John Conklin, set designer; and Duane Schuler, lighting designer. The production’s revival stage director is Paula Williams.
