Hawaiian Horses, Chang and McGarrett: Hawaii Five-0 2010 200th Episode

Summary: Hawaiian horses, anticipated in their assistance seven seasons ago, activated a cowboy's detective abilities in Hawaii Five-0 2010's 200th series episode.

Association with Hawaiian horses accounts for a legendary detective's aptitudes in the Hawaii Five-0 2010 active police procedural series' 200th episode The Smoke Seen in the Dream Now Rises Nov. 9, 2018.
Director Brian Spicer and writers Peter M. Lenkov, Matt Wheeler and David Wolkove brandish the olelo au ("advice") Pua A'e La Ka Uwahi O Ka Moe. Ancient Hawaiian culture considers sleep as times for winds to catch the sleeper's spirit from the lua'uhane (tear duct, literally "soul pit") for adventures and problem-solving. Season 9's seventh episode demands Steve McGarrett's (Alex O'Loughlin) digging into dream-like pasts in his grandfather's cold case with Apana Chang (Dec. 26, 1871-Dec. 18, 1933).
The Honolulu Police Department employed Chang as Hawaii Humane Society officer in 1894, Chinatown patrol officer in 1898 and detective exposing gambling and opium-dealing in 1916.

His paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) years, 1891-1894, with Helen Kinau Wilder's (Nov. 23, 1869-Feb. 4, 1954) Hawaiian horses furnished Chang with detective-friendly observational, organizational and physical skills.
Wilder, daughter of shipping businessman Samuel Gardner Wilder (June 20, 1831-July 28, 1888) and founder of the Hawaii Humane Society, gathered Hawaiian horses onto her landholding. Richard Jeffery Cleveland (Dec. 19, 1773-Oct. 12, 1860) herded the first horses into Owyhee (Hawai'i), from California in 1803 on the Lelia Byrd, as royal gifts. The merchant marine supercargo for Captain William Shaler's (1773-March 29, 1833) merchandise purchases and sales introduced the Mexican equines into Kealakekua Bay, Hawai'i, and Lahaina, Maui.
Two mares respectively gift-paired, for King Kamehameha I (1736?-May 8/14?, 1819), with a foal and with a stallion journeyed 3,100-plus nautical miles (5,741.2 kilometers, 3,567.42 miles).

Kamehameha and advisor John Young (March 17, 1742/1744?-Dec. 17, 1835) initially kept the mare and foal and the mare and stallion respectively on Maui and Hawai'i.
Joseph Brennan's book Paniolo listed among impacts that "the animals were allowed to run wild. And, in time, their progeny and other imports increased and multiplied." King Kamehameha II (Jan. 1, 1797-July 14, 1824) managed horseback maneuvers such that in 1830 he manipulated a yearling wild bullock into capture for luncheon meat. Hawaiian niches netted their first cattle and first cattle and horse ranches in 1793, with Captain George Vancouver's (June 22, 1757-May 10, 1798) shipment, and 1832.
Hawaiian horses offer freight, military, plantation, polo, racing, ranching and transportation services from Haleakalā, Maui; Maha'ulepo, Kaua'i; Ni'ihau; Waipio, O'ahu; Mauna Kea, Waimanu and Waimea, Hawai'i.

Ernest Gus Cothran, Jr. of Austin's Texas A&M University published July 2010 genetic analyses of 75 Hawaiian horses as genetically stable, long-term healthy, mixed-origin feral populations.
Professor Emeritus Cothran qualifies Denmark's spotted Knabstrupper and the Quarter Horse as queuing up genetically nearest to even-tempered, feral, lean, narrow rib-caged, small, sure-footed Hawaiian horses. He reveals that "genetic variation in the Hawaiian horse population is quite high" and "likely" retains "a strong component of genetics that originated from the Thoroughbred." He suggests that northern and southern Big Island sample Hawaiian horses show adaptable, disease-resistant, recessive gene-resistant descent from Arabian, Iberian, North American and Thoroughbred horse breeds.
Hawaiian horses took Steve, Lori Weston (Lauren German) and Danny Williams (Scott Caan) through Lāna'i Sept. 26, 2011, and Chang from horseback riding into detective work.
